Its because it gives you opportunity to get rid of that psychological lock and all emotions, feelings and all the things that affect your playing negatively and maybe it lets you concentrate more, not that like you can't do it without different stuff, its more about people don't know how to handle those things & situations in everyday life without substances.

So true... I'm a lead singer who also plays guitar, mostly rhythm, the occasional lead. In the last couple of years, I have really concentrated on improving my lead playing, just using backing tracks. Now I find that more and more often, I realize that I had just played a really excellent lead line, and it definitely was not that I have stopped thinking, but more that I hear only the tracks and my notes. It's hard to describe, but it's like for a few moments, my hands knew what to do, without conscious guidance from my brain. Like you said, it takes practice, but it's awesome when that starts happening!

I've been playing for 20 years and found that very informative I fell into the trap of trying to play as many notes as fast as possible but it's not about that it's about playing with feeling and that's what makes a great solo 🎸🎸🎸

The 3 note improv example in the style of BB King really opened my eyes. It sounded so good, with only 3 notes. I have been focusing on blues improv for the last half a year but I mostly noodle up and down the pentatonic scale and it mostly does not sound good. Simplicity is hard :)

In 2nd solo at 3:45, look like you're mixing the major and minor pentatonics over a twelve bar blues. Can you give some guidance on when to play in the minor pentatonic, and when to use the major? In this example, it looks like you: -1.) Used the minor pentatonic for the first 4 bars over the I chord -2.) Then used the major pentatonic for the next 4 bars over the IV-IV-I-I chords -3.) Then when back to the minor pentatonic for the V-IV-I-I chords How should an improvising guitarist think about this when approaching a 12-bar blues? Thanks!

He uses probably the most popular shape/box in blues music, over the 1-4, 9-11 bars. It's the top 5 notes of second position of minor pentatonic. It's in the key of B in this instance (just 3 top strings) It looks like this: E |--o--|------|--o--|----|----| B |--o--|------|--o--|----|----| G |------|--o--|------|----|----| 9 10 11 12 He only uses the top three notes which are the 4th, minor 3rd and the root (from top to bottom). he also bends into the major 3rd from minor 3rd and into 5th from the 4th. Then on 5-8 and 12 bars he uses what's usually called the B.B king box E |------|--o--|------|--o--| B |------|--o--|------|--o--| G |------|------|--o--|------| 11 12 13 14 Here he uses only the bottom three notes of this shape which are the major 2nd the root and the major 6th. He bends from the 2nd into the minor and major 3rds. This box is a in the third position of major pentatonic the only thing changed is the major 3rd on the top E string. Instead it's the 4th.
