that last advice are the reason i able to play guitar quite decent now. just never give up. For me playing guitar help me overcome my anxiety and get some confidence when i meet people. so its not only about playing music, but also precious skill that i will have for my entire life

All excellent tips. I learnt very early on that open string are your friend. If you keep that strumming hand moving rhythmically, they become part of your chord changes.

Great video! Something that i wish i knew when starting- When changing chords never stop strumming in the tempo. Even if you mess up it will still sound better then a delay.

All your tips are highly recomended. But there is one for me that i'm using often in my (art-) business. Tell the ones who give you a feedback, that it has to be HONEST and constructive! How many times your friends just say "wow, cool" only not to disapointing you. But this get's you nowhere. By the way, i really dig your channel because of the profound themes, your playing(!) and not to forget the high resolution vids, which are best!

I never had any desire to play the guitar even though I've been obsessively into music for years, one day I impulsively bought a cheap used electric guitar and amp and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. As a matter of fact I think I even started watching your videos before I ever started playing and I've noticed how my appreciation for music has intensified quite a bit with gaining more understanding to what goes into creating these often glanced over sounds. Love your videos and especially the ones like this, I need to learn everything I can about the guitar!

I would not consider myself a beginner guitarist by any means, that being said, I check these videos out occasionally because I want to start teaching some basic lessons myself to some friends, and I always find your tips helpful. Most of these were pretty run of the mill for me, all good thing, but stuff I already knew and practiced. That is until I got to the section about tapping your foot. I definitely have an issue with rushing, and though you're right it's hard to tap and play sometimes, I've been doing it since I saw this video, and the difference is immense. I still rush, but it is much much easier for me to detect when I am rushing or when I want to rush, it really helps me notice my timing errors a lot better. This is an extremely helpful tip that I wish I knew from the beginning. I love this channel because of the range of skill of lessons you teach, from expert to beginner stuff, but they are all really great tips. Keep it up man I love it.

For me number 10 is really important, within 1 month I can hop between feeling confident and like a total failure multiple times, but I keep going because I enjoy myself. I would rather enjoy my journey up the mountain than get straight to the top without admiring the view :) Thanks for the great videos!

Favourite tipp .. oh maybe, to practice slowly and not rush up things, as thats not how our brain/finger combo works. The slower and exact we practice, the more "details" are memorized unconscious, and with more practice we instinctivly to the right thing. Choose the right little milimeters of the right finger pressing the right string in the right moment with the right pressure. Play fast all the time is like we wear thick gloves, and the gloves never become thinner. The gloves only become thinner when we practice slowly and exact, and speed up when we get it done perfectly on slow tempo. And one days the "imaginary gloves" disapear, and with lot of practice, it seems like we play "on the perfect milimeter of the finger bones"...

My tip is to play with a backing track. That helps keep time and also makes you more aware of what notes you can play over what chords.

You met Tommy Emmanuel? Cool. These are all handy tips. The best one is Never Give Up! I gave up at age 16, now I'm starting again at 47, it's never too late but I really wish I hadn't given up at 16.

Some people have a natural talent for playing guitar. I am not one of them..lol.. I have been a beginner for 50 years. Sad but true. I still enjoy making "sounds" and have developed my own limited techniques and style. I guess I just keep trying huh? I might be going backwards at this point in life. Arthritis, forgetting what I used to know, voice is gone etc etc. I do have a good ear, that's about it. Transferring that to my hands is a task. Still I must not stop. Enjoyed the video. @@mikeellis8385 Thanks for the encouragement! Yes I do play for my myself. But I have hit a wall/barrier that won't let me learn more, in fact I am forgetting what I used to know. It is frustrating. And of course I have developed bad habits with my playing never having had lessons. I still have my callouses though, that is a good sign right?..lol. When my fingers seize up I can once again try and learn slide. Something I have always felt clumsy with. I will never give up ;o)

I hit those walls, too. I just keep trying, maybe sidetrack a bit and learn something else to get the inspiration going again. Lots of tutorials on KZbin so you can always find something! Good Luck!

@@mikeellis8385 Good to know I am not the only one..lol.. Yes youtube is full of great tutorials and ideas. That is why I am here. And I really like the Pilgrim's way of conveying what he means. Great playing too. I am afraid youtube will go away at some point. Or become for pay only. I think it's great some artists are making money from their videos, but I can't afford to pay. And I can't afford to go to patreon. I just barely pay the bills. Including internet..lol.. Thanks again for the encouragement. It means a lot. One friend of mine told me to quit if I couldn't get better..lol. Hurt my feelings. I play a lot and have for all these years. I play for me not him. I try to keep it simple. That helps and works just fine. I have no desire to be a shredder. I spend a lot of time noodling leads. Which is what I enjoy. Don't think I could jam with many people. They aren't good enough, or they are too good. And with someone like me, it is even more frustrating because you just keep saying" how about this one" Play a few bars, then try something else..lol. Nowadays I have no one to jam with at all, except youtube. I love youtube. Good luck to you too!

I used to play all the time without practicing, because I love to play and hate to practice. Unfortunately that create a mediocre player, and one who practices mistakes. Gotta do those freaking exercises every day, because it teaches your fingers to go to the right place. Also, if you're in for the long haul, get a great sounding guitar. She'll invite you to play so much your wife/GF will get jealous

Good advice. A decent, all solid wood guitar that's setup to your liking and sounds pleasant to you is so important. I would add to experiment with different nut widths. I went to a 1 3/4" and it completely changed my feel for the instrument.

I’m not a beginner but only a fool thinks he has nothing to gain from listening to a video like this one when it first comes up in his or her channel. Sooooo.....Number 10 is my favorite tip - Never quit. For me it’s been about playing at least some every day. I’ve played guitar since I was 10 years old. I’m 65, now. Because of work choices over the decades, I haven’t able to play every day but when I could play, I made sure there was a guitar in my hands as soon and as often as possible. I’ve read that Hendrix & SRV carried one around one with them like a kid carries a favorite toy; often observed working over the same riff until their companions were thoroughly annoyed (I’ve driven my wife crazy while trying to learn the picking patterns of many a tune!). I also read that Steve Vai said that if he skips a day of practice, he can tell the difference but if he misses two days, his fans can tell the difference. If a guitar playing leviathan like Vai feels that way about it, then I have to be grateful for the music I can play on the instrument I love almost as much as I love my friends, flaws and missed notes and all.

Good news: you absolutely can learn to play. Get a guitar...pretty much any guitar. There are many free resources from which to learn some basics (learning the basic chords is incredibly important). Mostly, it's just a matter of practice, and taking pleasure and satisfaction in each little bit of progress you make. If you practice regularly...even a little bit... you WILL improve. And you'll be making music the whole time, which is wonderful thing. You may or may not become a guitar god, but you WILL learn to play. Good luck.

Keep your guitar out of its case when your home. Listen to music you enjoy to play. And go to a local music store, often they'll spend time with you helping for free. Been playing 3 years no lessons except YT. As mentioned before: Obsession will bring you to a higher skill.
