I lived in Kaili Guizhou for a solid duration of over two years and went to all those villages and festivals with many dear local Chinese friends. I understand the confusion of the Hmong from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam and USA when it comes to the name of this people group but there are many many different Miao/ Hmong groups throughout Asia with similar to very different cultural practices and dialects. There is so much for all of us to learn from each other

Thank you all for your comments. I am learning a lot from them. I am aware that Miao is an offensive term to some, but that's the term used in China by the people themselves, so that's what I used. I certainly mean no offense. When I visited the villages in Guizhou it looked like they were gearing up for Chinese tourism. There were lots of Han Chinese visitors, but no foreigners. I suspect many of the younger people had left the villages, and that's why it was mostly older people doing the dancing. In all my travels, I enjoyed my visit to these villages the most. I was with a small group of people from Hawaii and was the only caucasian. As I walked down the village streets I would hear people call "Lao Wai! Lao Wai!" (foreign white person). They would come to their doors and invite me in for food. The people didn't have much, but they were always friendly and generous. I hope I can go back someday before tourism ruins the culture. Jim (aka Lao Yang)

China is not the problem, nor are the people. It's the CCP that is the problem. As long as you paraded yourself around like a circus then you don't have any problem. But if you want to fight for the respect and survival of your people, then they will shut you up.

i don't want to sound mean... but why is everybody so sensitive now a days. just watch the video, and enjoy it, not debate about it. this isn't a political issue, it's a celebration. so why is everyone so aggressive in the comment section??? and i don't get what's with all the debates about miao isn't hmong thing, people really need to chill a bit before shouting at others about their opinions about each, and with all the miao videos i've seen so far has been debates about who's right and who's wrong. just sit back and relax. it'll make things so much easier too. YK Cir Dude chill, he is not wrong just because he knows less. Instead, maybe you can explain about the term Miao for him peacefully instead of cussing him out. He didn’t know that and was just calling them what he heard they were called, and yes the people there also calls themselves Miao. Still, it is not his fault.

It’s correct call “Miao nationality”,and the largest Miao village is “Xi jiang” where from my home city to there about 30 minutes, almost nobody know about “Hmong” what’s that in China , but everyone know Miao people and cultures, because the most famous Miao costumes and silver ornaments are very ornate and something else all from there ,I think for “Hmong”just as a kind of English translation。by the way, the most famous Miao culture and most people live in my hometown area in the world . Welcome to visit !

@@baobo6969 Don’t mind the Hmong Laos or some of the Hmong Americans They always think the term is insulting because they misunderstood the term for the mandarin word mao, which is cat. So they think Chinese is calling them wild cats. It’s been like that forever. We were told by our older generation back in Laos that’s what the term means. Until some of us came here to America, studied mandarin and understood that Miao in mandarin was the word for seedling or sprout 😐🤷🏻‍♀️

+Kevin Vang I just wanted to express my surprise at reading any mention of the Native American peoples mixed in with a discussion of Chinese ancestry. You see, I have just finished watching several KZbin videos of the Hmong dances, and was VERY strongly struck by the similarity of dance movements between the Hmong peoples' dances and the Native American dances of some of our tribes here in the States. I thought that I was just imagining things...but, perhaps not? I did not know that there may be a common ancestry. I would like to learn more about this.

Well, then, I thank the Chu Dynasty for winning back "our" land. :) Thank you for your response, Kevin -- I really appreciate your taking the time. Yes, some of our Native American tribes do have the epicanthic fold, which should be a "tell" right there. I had often wondered about that, too. Of course, it now makes sense for them to have those eyes if they are related.

@@Vangboi414 Hah, you're like a Japanese Brazilian claims that "I am a proud Japoneses , I am not Japanese who never step outside Japan". Nobody gives you a damn. And you migrated into SEA when Manchurians were the ruler!!! Do you know during the WII tens of thousands of Miao died in the war against Japanese? Civillians and generals/soldiers included. Hmm, your brothers treated you good, then that can't explain why you end up exiling in the US. Now put "Hmong persecution" in the search engine , oops suggestions come out "Hmong persecution Laos""Hmong persecution Vietnam"...well, it seems that they don't look good, punch in the face, huh

For all of you that don't know. Now in china there are only four groups left that are now considered Miao nationality. That is the Amao, Gho Xiong, Hmub and Hmong tribes. China has kicked out all the other ethnic minorities once consider miao. The remaining 4 groups is now official. Simply because all 4 groups are shamans, share and worship the same ancestors. The 4 groups can not understand each other but speak the same tongue that is just spilt into dialects.
