I suspect Ding thought 'I'm not gonna beat him with opposite bishops, so let's not waste energy here'. I think it's a fair justification, but still, there was a lot of play left in the position, especially, as Aman says, that he had played splendidly up to this point

I want both of these guys to win, but I have to say, so far Ding has showed the naysayers that he can win and at least hold against Gukesh, the predictions of a bloodbath haven’t come to bear at all, fortunately, but the longer this match goes on, I feel like Ding as a better chance to win it. Gukesh doesn’t seem to be giving Ding problems with white, he’s been able to draw these games pretty easily, if Ding can get one win with white I suspect he’s going to try to draw the rest of the match. If it comes to tie breakers Ding probably feels pretty good, but watching his time usage I think it’d be a bad idea to try pushing it to that. He needs to just find one game and capitalize on his chances, but today he had that chance and didn’t. I’m not sure what’s holding him back. Gukesh seems like he’s got a good handle on the match, but so far it feels like Ding is just a little bit better and if he wasn’t so hesitant maybe he’d be a significant bit better, but that mental block or whatever it is that’s holding him back is pretty huge.

If you'd have asked me a couple weeks ago, I was definitely on the Gukesh bandwagon. Ever since the end of game one, I've been excited every game to see how things turn out. I'm cheering for both of them.

These recaps have been fantastic for someone like me that's just a hobbyist. I actually understand what is going on. Thank you Aman and ChessBrah :)

This is where Magnus is better than anyone else, clearly Ding here was not interested in a slow and long endgame grind in order to win, a shame, this could bite him in the back later on.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Ding definitely had solid fighting chances. Also, I really liked the question you asked in the other video: Would Magnus offer a draw in this position? It really highlights why he's the GOAT and such a phenomenal player.

It seems like Ding is tired of long games. He takes the draw at the first opportunity.

I have a theory, Gukesh might be saving some prep for ding later on in the French. I believe that one or more of ding's seconds are going to work more on the Steinitz French

Why is French Defense not often played in world chess championships?
@danhayes13062 ай бұрын
e5 and sicillian are considered the top rate e4 responses with a lot less challenging lines that white can throw at black french and caro, while still good openings, have some lines which arent exactly ideal to defend for a draw french/caro typically are just surprise openings in a WC stakes match

It's a bit disliked by stockfish. Although its opinion is irrelevant at human level when you throw away a 0.7 advantage as world champion and think your opponent is better💀
@ethanguo42192 ай бұрын
Also stockfish is known to blunder badly too despite being the strongest engine. What does it know about openings anyway. Stronger engines in future will probably say different things

At one point, Gukesh is quite distressed after spotting the disadvantaged position, but he still manages to recollect himself and fight on. My kudos to him. On the other hand I cannot relate to Ding's thinking. He has been 99%+ accuracy until the end.

The problem here is if magnus played here he could have continued in the end and put tremendous pressure on his opponent. Dings mindset is completely different 😂

Ding is too big brained for most. Didnt want to be the world champ, everyone saying he might be mentally broken and has no chance. Absolutely locked in for game 1 to show hes still the ding and just wants to retire. 🫡
