Represent Kalihi! Thank you for stopping by Gulick Delicatessen. In my view, the Chow Fun tasted like the kind we could geet off of food truck/manapua-man type...pretty good. It's sad that right down the street, Matsumoto's Okazuya & Restaurant might be closing next year if the owner cannot find someone to continue his 20-year-old business; he's looking to retire. The same can be said about so many local mom-&-pop eatery establishments, who's owners are opting to go into retirement.

Oh no! I hadn’t heard that owner of Matsumoto Okazuya was looking to retire too. It was actually on my list of next places to review! Sad that so many of the iconic Hawaii Mom and Pop places are closing down. 😞 I love supporting and promoting local businesses! Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. 😀

@@TinyAsianPastryGirl You have a wonderfully positive channel! Thank you!! Many years ago, at the locations of Ray's Cafe on King St. in Kalihi, there was an okazuya run by my friend's family 'Naka's Okazuya'. They decided to close for that same reason. They were all getting older and wanted to spend their latter years relaxing, rather than going through the 24-hour-a-day grind of keeping their business open. They loved and missed all of their customers. Although there comes a time where everyone needs to enjoy life, just by simply looking at an occasional sunrise. At times we enjoy the food, although we forget the labor-of-love that goes into all of this. Thank you for supporting the local small business owners!!!

Very true!! The business owners have all worked so hard their entire lives, they really do need to spend some well-deserved time with their families in retirement. Thank you for your wonderful comments!! 💗

Now this looks even better than NY deli food! And that's saying something 👏We use furikake in, like, EVERYTHING 😂
@TinyAsianPastryGirl22 күн бұрын
YES! Furikake is used more than salt in my house (but not more than shoyu!) 😁😁 Thanks so much for watching!!

I grew up in Kalihi but we moved to the Leeward side. I’ve never been to Gulick Okazuya. I guess I should check it out. What drew me to your video was your dog. My Sheltie really resembles yours.
@TinyAsianPastryGirl28 күн бұрын
Awwww, you have a sheltie too? I’ve only ever owned shelties,… they’re the best… so loyal and very empathetic. And I actually have never been to Gulick before going there for this video, though I always have heard people talk about it. Thanks for watching!! 😀

I have to ask,..how many places there sell Okazuyas? I bet there isn't any within a 40 mile radius of my house here in Michigan. More of a Japanese terminology than anything else? Really, just asking. It does look very good, and makes me miss traveling like I did when I was in the Navy, but it wasn't the same without The Little Lady with me.
@TinyAsianPastryGirl25 күн бұрын
Hey Paulie!! We have so many okazuyas here in Hawaii! It’s a Japanese term and very similar to a delicatessen that sells pre-made local Japanese food that you buy ala cart. I love tasting various okazu from the places around here, though it can get to be quite expensive. Thanks so much for watching, Paulie!! 😀❤️

The best chow funn was a Naka's okazuya nobody come close

Where was Naka’s Okazuya? Are they still in business? I don’t think I’ve heard about them. Thanks for your comment.
@stephenAl14329 күн бұрын
Must be expensive, a plate can easily run around $20.00....
@TinyAsianPastryGirl28 күн бұрын
Yes, I have been noticing okazuya prices have been going up all over. I almost expect to pay over $20 for a plate nowadays. Thanks for watching and thanks so much for your comment!
