Would like your opinion on several special purpose clubs. Specialized chippers, sand wedges, gx7, vixa v12. Since I have limited practice time (and skill), I want to reduce all variation, and I don't really need versatility and big range of shots. It only messes up my regular swing. Especially long irons and driver I am unable to use. Watched with interest your cutting down a driver!

Mark Crossfield’s reviews are some of the best out there. He makes no secret of his Titleist affiliation and his dispute with TM, so there is a need to ignore some of the fluff, but the meat of the reviews is excellent. It’s also worth noting that his Titleist relationship has given him (and therefore the viewer) access to things that would not be possible otherwise. I personally think that viewers will binge watch reviews of a club by all the channels anyway, so if a bad club is made by Titleist (in the case of Mark), you’d soon get to know about it. As Lewis says though, the big manufacturers don’t make bad clubs, it’s just a question as to who would need them. Mark has, and continues to question the role of certain clubs in the Titleist range so it can’t be said that they are immune from scrutiny on that channel.

Right, I've only watched up to 18 minutes but something is getting to me......tell Louis to take an extra club. He's always short on each of the holes I've seen so far. That's something we amateurs do, not pro's. Great honest video as always Andy.

I think Lew hit on a good point when he said that there are no bad clubs anymore. Because of this, whilst I believe reviewers are being honest, most reviews I see come across as being fairly bland and much of a muchness. I realise that sounds like I'm being overly critical which isn't my intention, I just mean that, when there's a gnat's whisker of difference between most clubs, there's really not much that can be said about them to set club 'A' apart from club 'B', other than 'I like this one slightly more than that one'. As for a question: What's your most annoying shot? For me it's the one where I have a chance of one of those high risk, one in ten go for glory shots which I turn down in favour of the sensible lay-up with an 8 iron....which I shank into the rough or top 30 yards forward. Gawd that's irritating! 😀

Really enjoyed the video, it re-lived some happy and fond memories of playing Gullane 2. As to honesty remember "one mans meat is another man's poison" and we all have hidden bias or prejudice. As long as you are honest to yourself when reviewing then whats to criticise, even though people may not agree with what you say. It is always good to hear and compare what various people have said about equipment and over a period of time you get a feel for who you want take notice of. In my opinion - it was a little unfair to imply that Mark Crossfield's reviews are somehow less honest because of his Titleist sponsorship. Now I have never met Mr. Crossfield, but based on how he presents himself on KZbin, it looks to me like he is confident/arrogant enough (in himself and in his channel) to NOT let the sponsorship consciously effect his reviews. I appreciate that the sponsorship could effect his UNCONSCIOUS bias - but everyone (including you) has unconscious bias - which comes from the culture you live in, your life experiences etc. etc. So....you, Rick Shiels or anyone could easily have more unconscious bias than Mr. Crossfield - despite his sponsorship....maybe?
@TheAverageGolfer5 жыл бұрын
I never suggested they were less honest, I said that I didnt think a reviewer should be sponsored as it is obvious to then question any such alliance. On a simple level of respect for the brand sponsor surely it is difficult to criticise that brand and I am yet to see it? I might be wrong and can only speak as how I feel I would feel if 'contracted' to a brand? I am not aware of my unconscious bias.......obviously ;) Great comments btw.

Seemed I needed different, shaft, flex and head. Ended up much more consistent :-) Will be laughed at when I pull a 4 iron on the 1st tomorrow. How do you know if the 4i in a set suits you or if your better off in a combo set etc as you can't usually hit the 4i. Hcp 22 here. Not bothered with bad lies. I just move the ball backwards. No penalty. What is the point? I don't practice enough to hit balls perfectly from every lie. I can't hit it consistently with a good lie! 2-3 meters difference in distance has no effect on my game anyway with my dispersion. So why bother. Quick decisions, faster play, more fun. I don't consider it cheating, and I do try to avoid bad lies. Leaving my driver in the bag most of the time for that reason. My Hcp is too high, but it gives me a better read if my game is improving. A great vlog Andy with good golf and questions. My own feeling is that it is not necessarily about honesty but badge snobbery. As usual you are exempt here by having tested from the top end i.e. PXG and the lesser brands such as Benross and always given an accurate review. Now we have had some opposite views on PXG but the market has become almost a level field regarding cost. I would also acknowledge that your golf has improved by using PXG. Financially my budget cannot run to these higher prices and my age now wouldn't justify the long term cost so I bought some senior Benross whilst retaining my Cobras just in case. Guess what my game has improved particularly tempo. My argument is that here are two extremes of clubs and price that you gave very accurate and constructive reviews on. Only a few you tubers will review the bottom end..... badge snobbery. A bit like car programmes. We all seem to miss the point that it's all about enjoyment price and brand is irrelevant. Just because a person's review isn't what you expected doesn't make it dishonest and why w ould they want to be .They would soon get found out. Sorry for the long preamble but I was just trying to be honest !!! Cheers and thanks Andy.

I'll answer the question of the title before I enjoy the video. Nobody makes bad clubs and anybody can get the correct shaft fitted for them to make any head work. So it's down to how the club looks to your own eye, perhaps sound and feel added in. Colour too. So I'm going to say that the vast majority of club testers are unbiased. Even in a head to head they will be honest and say this one is a fraction longer but I like the look of the other one. On the whole the people I watch are honest. I don't think there is huge amounts of money changing hands for a biased review. 99.99% honest. I have stopped watching KZbin reviews on golf clubs. The opinion expressed by the reviewer is solely that, his opinion. Opinions vary from reviewer to reviewer. Honest reviews of clubs still has to be taken with an eye of caution as we all have different swings and feel. What works great for one person will not necessarily work for everyone. Plenty of good clubs out there that have high customer reviews, but you always find some comments about how those people hated the thing. All you should do is use the reviews as a way to narrow your field down for your own testing. Most guys I follow on KZbin are either sponsored by an OEM or definitely have closer ties to one than any other but it doesn't worry me. I would never buy a club on the back of a single review and the 'biases' whether unconscious or conscious even themselves out across reviewers. Like you said in the video there are no bad clubs these days; it's just that some suit an individual better than others. The biggest problem I have with some reviewers is that they don't review clubs in a way that is relevant to how that club will be used. If they are reviewing bladed players irons fair enough rip the 6 iron 200+ yards. But what is the point of a scratch golfer smashing a club aimed at a 20+ handicapper who would struggle to hit it much over 160? The club (probably) reacts very different at different club speeds and with less consistent strikes. If they don't bring in someone more appropriate to the club to help on the review they should at least crank back the swing speed. Matty on TXG does this some times I wish others would. The Average Golfer is great but if like in this video you are hitting your drives 300 yards you may need to bring in someone a bit more 'average' to stay relevant to me :-)

Andy my own take on the comments you received on the Honma driver are there are not many if any reviews where the clubs, drivers, or irons get Let’s say average praise at best hence why I assume lots of people said they liked your honest review only because it’s rare, and Lou is right not many manufacturers make poor clubs so the reviews tend too be good and that’s not a criticism it’s a fact it will boil down too looks, performance, and cost if someone decides too try whatever club they are after. As for you comment on a certain pro who has a club endorsement I honestly believe he gives a honest review on other clubs many might disagree but I’ve seen many of his videos and he gives them as much praise as his own brand (Titleist 😂) that’s just for the record, also probably the biggest KZbin pro he had a sponsorship with a certain company on rangefinders and he doesn’t come in for as much stick as the other pro we are on about, and again I believe him on his views but that doesn’t mean I would buy that particular rangefinder I would test it for myself or ask my pals if that’s what I needed, so all in all people should be wise enough too test for themselves whatever they are looking for and not buy it because Mr X a pro or amateur golfer says it’s brilliant that’s my honest opinion on both questions. Enjoyable video Andy beautiful course a bit chilly and windy by the looks of it but it’s still a great day out on the links.

I agree but by simply being associated with a brand I think it opens you up to questioning and why it wouldnt be for me. The only other point I would make and I dont know the answer.....has there been any negativity towards any Titleist product on Mark's channel? Thats where I would find it compromising
@geordietoonforlife.11555 жыл бұрын
The Average Golfer That’s a great question and too be fair your the first I know of giving a club or brand a average score, but Andy that’s all the viewer wants a honest opinion nothing more then it’s up to the individual too try it out, anyway people trust you and that’s the highest praise you can get, so well done just keep the reporting truthful in your opinion and your channel will grow and grow.

On reflection, you're in my top five golf based channels (actually its more like joint top five - no particular favourite). I don't personally like club reviews that go into distance, spin, launch etc because thats all down to the person hitting the ball (and I'm not sure anyone who does it has any semblance of constant striking - of the ones I watch anyway), what I do like is:- here is the new club from ****, this is what's new, these are the club specs, level of player might benefit from it, what shafts are available, and most importantly how much they cost. (Amazes me how many reviews never mention cost😵) Keep up the good work - any chance of more course vlogs? One a month, even? Edit : nothing wrong with reviewer giving personal view ... Love it, don't like it, keep pulling it, too much offset, not worth the money, perhaps even giving it: should you buy it, consider it, shortlist it, run a mile, etc 👍😂

I understand what you are saying about sponsored YTs that review clubs, and I know to whom you may be referring, but to me it seems that he/they bend over backward to show everything involved in the review, and having done so the question of integrity is far less an issue. (I think some of those criticisms may reflect views on personality rather than integrity.) Just because a review is negative doesn't mean it's "honest" any more than a positive review suggests dishonesty or a lack of honesty. I think most of the major club reviewers try to be honest and fair whether or not they receive benefits, because their survival as reviewers depends on their reputation.

@@TheAverageGolfer Yeah I understand what you are saying. It would seem logical for that to be the case. I was very sceptical too when I first heard about the sponsorship but after watching his reviews he simply tests the product and gives his opinion the same as every other reviewer. Parfield is the most honest and best club reviewer on KZbin. So he's sponsored by Titliest, what's the problem? He only agreed to go with them so he could retain a completely open and honest opinion on all products and manufacturers.

Robin Beach first of all I don’t doubt his integrity, I just don’t think you should be contracted to a manufacturer and review competitors products? Hence the reason since my partnership with Seed I haven’t reviewed golf balls 👍
@FunkmeisterOfSedgley5 жыл бұрын
@@TheAverageGolfer if you saw Mark's original vid, when he first became sponsored, he emphasised the point that he would not be gagged in anyway about praising other manufactureres products. He had to retain his editorial neutrality, or he would not have signed the contract. He recently reviewd the new 'rusty' TM wedge and told the world how lovely it looked and how yes, he could game it. Seems to prove my point totally. The massive bonus Mark, and in turn, the viewer has reaped from this venture with Titliest, is the access Mark has had to the Titliest staff players on the range. Some of this has been remarkable viewing.

I've never watched a review that has left me questioning the integrity of the reviewer. I don't watch Crossfield as i find his style annoying but agree that as he is sponsored he shouldn't be doing club reviews. The reviews you do are some of the best out there.Infact your a youtube golf top 3 reviewer in my opinion even though your golf swing resembles a chimp having an epileptic fit ;-) Perhaps you could review some club fitting places Like turn up for a club fitting and give an honest review of the companies services or even go in under cover. I have lots of ideas for youtube content regarding golf that isn`t being done. And, I think people like the honest negative reviews because often reviewers keep the reviews sweet to keep the Manufacter`s sweet for the free send outs Crossfield pissed off TM and no review gear for him anymore. Questioning your integrity is a low blow, and I will say that seeing some negativity is refreshing however I can't help but think 'honesty' is the wrong concept. Misleading maybe? Slating a company has not fared well for other individuals before (although we may only have seen half a story), but I definitely read into what is not said in most content. I am not a fan of the majority of reviews that compare club to club, but I want to know what the club in question could do in my hands before I go have a hit myself. Club A in shaft B may be right for me, even if one didn't perform as well. I know most reviewers stress the importance of fitting, but it's still an opinion based on that person's abilities and tendencies with a stock offering. Imagine comparing spectacles based on style, visibility and how devilishly handsome they could make you? As ridiculous as it is, it's entirely subjective to the individual and a lot of people are going to be really disappointed they aren't turning heads like Jude Law with an off the shelf product. I'm by no means saying you're doing it wrong as I love your content, keep it up! As a gear junkie, I feel that TXG are doing it right, but I may be the minority. I acknowledge that content is driven by the consumer and that they go nuts for reviews. 🤷♂️
