Gun laws need a total overhaul in canada. -oic needs too go (it's undemocratic) -rcmp needs too get out of the gun law "interpretation" bussiness (you want too limit mag size, barrel length, overall length (basically anything definitive) fine; but terms like can be easily converted (whats the level of effort thats easy) that allows rcmp too basically write law has too go -supressors need to be legalized (at very least for rifles) with a campaign to educate the public on reality of what they do instead of hollywood myth -red flag laws need too have mechanisms not only too protect potential victims of domestic abuse but also too restore the rights of gun owners falsely flagged or flagged maliciously (and punish those who abuse that system) -the whole pal/rpal system needs to be redone especially the initial application process -require first time gun owners apply in person at local police detachment and take their written and practicals on camera (cut out any possible identity games) - remove the needless nb loop (current setup is you apply it goes too n.b. too be spellchecked, then it goes to provincal firearms officers (where they actually check you out 😊) then if all good it goes back to n.b. to print out your pal/rpal so why are we paying that spellchecking? -property rights must be given much firmer protection so that legally aquired property not involved in a crime can't be simply confiscated whenever the next panic hits - the right of self defense (even using a firearm) needs to be enshrined in law, as is any use of firearm for protection is a automatic arrest of the victim Of course a key component of any of this is going too also include cracking down on actual criminals and closing justice's revolving door since criminal violence is always the excuse too violate the rights of law abiding canadians

Obviously you don’t know how government works and this is a big part of the problem with the average normie Canadian. But if the shoe fits, wear it. If he prorogues parliament, then the recent bans become null and void as do any bills sent to the senate for approval. That means the bills are dropped and doesn’t get Royal ascent. So therefore, the recent banned firearms are not prohibited and remain as the original classification. Only when government resumes can they re-table the re-classification which then once again has to go to the senate. Also, a new OIC CAN reverse the OIC ban and no it DOESN’T have to be legislated if the original gun ban wasn’t legislated to begin with and only done with an OIC.

@@danadouglas1968 Only laws that have not passed yet get scrapped if they prorogue, so the only way a ban would be scrapped from proroguing is if it was legislation that has not yet passed, OIC's do not get scrapped and they can still do an OIC even if the government is prorogued, so they can ban more even while prorogued, but that doesn't matter because worst case they'll be out in October because proroguing doesn't stop a scheduled election from happening.

This "fear" of supressors must come from US.. In most of the world allready allows supressors and where they are somewhat regulated its often quite mild regulation. Sweden went from having no supressors in the 90's, to limited supressors (license required) to fully unregulated supressors just 2 years ago. Now anyone with a gun can buy a supressor with no wait time.

If you do that solely for the purpose of owning an AR or pistol, it’s not worth it. As long as the registry is abolished again, there is no reason for the government to know what law abiding firearms owners have. There’s no best way to ensure this is to avoid all restricted firearms and go with non-restricted. There’s no best less government and more importantly the less RCMP you have in your life the better.

Scrap the old FA...New FA, all rifles non-restricted, regardless of barrel length. Full-auto allowed with a collector's license. All pistols and calibers just restricted, bring back the .25 and .32 pistols. Remove the mag capacity restriction and allow the sound suppressors. Even in England they are legal. Simple is best. Maybe we should take note of this. These OICs that immediately ban transport and regular use of targeted firearms ALSO PREVENT TRAINING PEOPLE ON HOW TO USE THEM. Some of us take our non-licensed friends to the range to show and teach them about firearms. Some professional instructors also organize “range day” events to non-licensed people who are curious about firearms. No one’s been harmed by these firearms and licensed owners so why stop existing owners from using them. Handguns are exclusively the firearms of choice for unlicensed criminals but licensed owners can still use grandfathered handguns. I’ll say it right out - Trudeau wants to prevent law-abiding Canadians from defending our country should a hostile power decide to use force to take over Canada.

Awfully convenient that Singh already said this once and went back on it, and then said it again in a statement (voting non confidence) but leaving the part out that it would only be after he had already qualified for his pension. I love how these so called public servants seem to be interested in serving themselves first. With that I anticipate March for the election. But it can’t come soon enough. A note on handguns, using an OIC to reverse legislation is (as far as I know) not possible. If something became law through the legislative process, it needs to pass through that same process to be repealed. The problem with this is even with a super majority in the house, the conservatives will struggle in the senate, where Trudeau stacked it with liberals on the way out. The ARs and other semi autos can come back quite quickly.

I really think we are naive and far too optimistic in what this new government will do for us "sport shooters". This is generally not a winning issue in Canada and a high risk for the conservative party and their future with the media attention they will get. I think we will get very little in terms of rollbacks and people will get upset and probably eventually get used to it and get comfortable with our "mostly" semi auto ban. I really wish i could be optimistic, but im not naive enough to expect anything but crumbs from Canadian politicians.

I don't agree with your read on this. The LPC will be in the political woodshed for nearly a decade after Trudeau, and believe it or not, undoing the Trudeau bans won't actually cost the conservatives anything politically. Anyone who votes against guns as major personal issue is already voting liberal or worse already, and this is actually a very uncommon demographic to begin with. People are very much aware that crime with illegal guns is skyrocketing in spite of these supposed bans that are allegedly supposed to put a stop to these shootings. They haven't. Do you remember in 2012 when they kept their promise to remove the long gun registry? How about in 2014 when the RCMP banned the 858 and the Swiss Arms and the Conservative Government told them to pound sand? Within the past 15 years the CPC has actually had a fairly good track record of keeping their promises when it comes to guns.

As a software engineer it's my opinion there's a high possibility the Backend software that drives the CFP has atrophied and regressed to the point the old classification and regestration system won't work at all. If that's the case, the Feds will either have to spend tens of billions to repair the software or completely rewrite the firearms act.

I am putting high hopes that we do see a reversal, especially on the Handgun ban. I am an IPSC shooter and have been since 1991. To excel in this sport, you have to practice and practice, and guns usually only last 5-6 years with a lot of practice. Yes, we can keep the guns we presently have to shoot in competition, but once those guns die, our sport is dead. The handguns that are used in crime are not legally bought firearms, so there is no point in banning them. Lets keep our sports alive!

Want to be able to get handguns still? Pretty interesting process. Get your security guard license or PI license (which is what i have). Then once you have that get your Guard / PI Agency Licenses with a business firearm license, then you can get carry permits for your business. You can also then purchase handguns still as a business owner that has an exemption.

I agree with you about the Ruger American. If you were looking for a cope gun for banned AR’s it isn’t it. NOW, I have a Ruger American LH in 7mm-08 and it is my most accurate bolt action/hunting rifle I have and have ever owned. Not sure if I lucked out. But price vs performance they are worth it in my opinion.

When was the AR-15 classed as restricted in Canada? I knew a guy when I was young in the early 90's and it seems to me that he had one that he would bring to my place to target shoot with. Not knowing much about the different guns at the time all I knew was it was a Colt, scary black rifle, and it shot 223. Was the AR-15 made restricted in the mid to late 90s, or were they deemed such earlier?

@@jimdent351 The firearms act has a provision that allows the government to ban any firearm they can specifically name, without actually making official changes to the law in parliament. So when Trudeau said that he banned 1000+ "assault weapons" in 2020, what he meant was he was banning AR15s (and a handful of other guns). But because a lot of companies make a lot of AR15s, he had to list them ALL by name.

I have a Ruger American ranch in 5.56 , its a nice little gun really nothing bad to say about it . However if the AR’s remain restricted and someone wanted a manual action rifle to use AR mags for just an extra non restricted fun gun I’m really liking the looks of that new Henry supreme Lever action 5.56 . That not only would be a nice pairing to go with your AR , it looks like it will just be a fun rifle in its own right

Im an American trying to follow this Canadian issue. What is OIC? As bad as things are here in New York state, Im very glad I dont have Canadian gun laws to deal with. Our Supreme Court may, hopefully, overturn NYS rifle and magazine bans. It is a battle for the most fundamental human right. I wish you all good luck in your fight!

An OIC is an Order In Council, its kind of like an Executive Order from the White House. It’s meant to be a quick fix for poorly worded legislation instead of having to amend a bill and waste a bunch of time in committee.

In Alberta? Everywhere. Near Calgary: Milo (CDTSA) runs a few matches per year, BTSA sometimes runs multigun matches. Near Edmonton: SPFGA and CHAS run monthly matches. Peace River also runs 3 gun matches.

A gun is a gun is a gun. With our license requirement for owners and daily background checks there is no reason to have classification. As has just been proven unregistered guns are almost impossible to ban and confiscate.

The act needs to be dramatically simplified. I’d do something like non-restricted: 10 round limit on everything with exemptions for .22, barrel length 16 with exemptions shotguns. Or something like that, so everyone (including police) can understand it. We also need to end arbitrarily classifying firearms (sks nonrestricted ar restricted ak prohibited)
