Jon K the constitution can be amended, there is nothing special about the first ten amendments other than they were created to appease anti-federalists. Unfortunately the vast majority of people in this country look to the federal government to solve problems, and the Democratic Party and most of the media drive policy in that direction. The civil rights movement spurred the country in that direction. I differ from IVs point of view in that something like TAPS is useful but it should be truly implemented at the state level. I am not sure if TAPS, as written, mandates state action or merely offers federal support of local efforts. As the voting population gets younger, more urban, and moves farther to the left, the risk is that the second amendment gets repealed, all of it. There are rich and powerful forces working to that end. Observe how rapidly the public outcry was escalated in the wake of these last two events. That is what Crenshaw is reacting to.

I agree completely. That's why I go farther than just saying it's a "people problem". It's a societal problem through and through. The internet turns people into nothing but an inhuman collection of words on a screen. Children are growing up now believing there is such a thing as "their truth" and that they can hide from conflicting ideas and viewpoints in "safe spaces". Then, the media purposefully polarizes the masses. And, finally, the mass murderers get rewarded with infamy by that same media because their actions are able to attract eyes to screens. It's going to get a lot worse, not better. These same firearms have been around for at least 40 to 50 years. This same class of firearms for at least 70 to 80. What has changed in that period of time? Our society and its values.

It wasn't just gun availability, you forgot to mention that the Immigration Act of 1965. "The act maintained per-country and total immigration limits, but included a provision exempting immediate relatives of U.S. citizens from numerical restrictions." In other words, chain migration. Our immigration quotas before that were chosen extremely carefully to allow those who did migrate to acclimate to American culture. Now too many people come in too fast, and the result is a very large group of people who wonder why they should acclimate when there's already millions of people who share their culture here.

A person I knew was having a long battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, her family had taken away her guns for her safety because of this and even after getting LE involved, having her evaluated at numerous medical facilities she still got into her car and drove it full speed into a tree, killing herself. Also, protective/restraining orders ALREADY prohibit the transport of firearms outside of the home.

The mandate was dropped less than 3 years ago. So decades is a HUGE stretch, years sure. This is a core Constitutional issue and would be fast tracked. The government is in the middle of a huge crisis of credibility, everybody sees it (even if they pretend to ignore it) they can't afford to ignore an issue that touches possibly 3 tenants of the bill of rights.

I think a safe room at each entry at schools would help. A room or small building that a person would have to go into before they are allowed to enter the school that would have the metal detector in it, and a security guard that would be inside the school watching that person would have to open the door for the person before entry.
