World champion shooter Rob Leatham and NRA American Rifleman's Joe Kurtenbach show you how you should really hold a gun.

You would think it's common sense really. I mean, you are holding a contraption made to make small explosions. Relax mentally while physically tightening.

Each one of these Gun Myths videos is a pocket course all by itself.

Living gun rule #3: @ 1:12 he's keeping finger off trigger until ready to shoot. There's a lot of stuff happening around him: listening to Joe, pretending to shoot poorly, maybe aware of camera etc but he's still off of that trigger.

Not to mention these guns rely on the recoil to cycle another round into the chamber. If you're too loose you risk a malfunction like a stove pipe jam etc....

I actually got a Glock to jam when I went to a range for the first time. I wondered why that happened. Then I realised that the grip was quite large for my hand back then and also I was trying to use all the skills I learned when using air guns for sport shooting (shooting slow, relaxing, breathing out, ...). Watching Rob's videos made me realise those skills are basically useless when shooting real steel.

How tight is tight? The tighter you hold creates tension and shaking. Should I stop before the death grip?

Relaxing can help if time is not a constraint. If time is a constraint, and you must shoot fast and accurately, you must control the gun.

Interesting because I shoot much better with my elbows bent and relaxed!

The Marine Corps teaches Breath, Relax, Aim etc.. but that is definitely not for pistol shooting. That is marksmanship training for rifle range marksmanship.
@joeberger34417 жыл бұрын
IronMikeUSMC yes and slow, controlled shooting at distance is a lot different than fast shooting at close range. Plus with rifles you can use shoulder pressure to stabilize it, so grip matters a bit less. With pistols all you have is your grip. So it needs to be tight enough to keep the gun from moving.

"Relaxing" with a rifle makes all the sense in the world, but not with a pistol.

Exactly my comment they teach that for b rifles this guy is kind of taking it the wrong way. I have speed pedals lot my guns control them . My fav is the tandemkross lower for mark iv shoots great all volquartsen upper basically a mambaquartsen

Make sense to me! I have seen loose grips cause a pistol to not recycle properly.

I always say relax mentally not physically . You have to fight the recoil of the gun but you should be clear headed and focused

Especially if your life is on the line. My body when all to hell hours after the incident but during it, I was calm and focused. I"m not a brave person but I was always taught to complete the job regardless of my own personal feelings. I also lucked out.

Relaxing is for rifles lol when your prone and shooting between heartbeats but still holding it firm you can do both actually. They don't mean relax in that sense .

This is interesting, because I found the opposite to be true while shooting my SD40. If I grip the gun too tightly, I pull my shots down and to the left. If I just let the gun sit in my hand, barely squeezing it at all, I become much more accurate.
@shooterqqqq4 жыл бұрын
You're pulling the gun down during the trigger squeeze. Rob has another video that addresses your problem.
@hartsickdisciple4 жыл бұрын
@@shooterqqqq That's pretty much what I implied in my comment. The problem has been solved...lol.

Bud, that’s because you need to look where you’re aiming your gun and learn trigger control
@hartsickdisciple3 жыл бұрын
@@tokahontas9990 I have no accuracy issues with other pistols. I also don't have them with the sd40, if I use the technique I described in my comment. It seems like you didn't comprehend the entirety of what I said.
@hartsickdisciple3 жыл бұрын
@@godgunsandgoldens That hasn't been the case. I shoot quite a bit. I think my grip is just too much when I consciously try to grip it tightly. I think it's different for everyone. I have gorilla grip or something.

Do snipers tense up and breath out at the same time when taking a shot?

the recoil control is different when you're suppine and placement of the gun. they are not usually in standing position.

Who relax when they shoot?
@shooterqqqq6 жыл бұрын
I do. A gun range is my happy place. It's where I'm safest, calm and joyful. That's relaxed mentally. As far as using muscles to tighten the grip, there may be a difference between gripping tightly or using muscle to capture the gun and locking it in place. I'm still in the development stage on that one.
