The whole Vera thing with Dutch is probably as reference to Firefly, he kinda reminds me of Jayne and Nathan Fillion does play Buck

It is jayne. As in, Adam Baldwin that plays jayne. Maybe a third of these lines are direct references to firefly because three of the four characters here are voiced by Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds), Alan Tudyk (Hoburn Wash, aka the pilot) and Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb, aka "Yeah, well Jayne ain't a girl"). The team at Bungie are mega nerds that hated that firefly was cancelled so they hired three of the actors as main characters for this game. They even play similar roles. It's a love note to firefly from Bungie and it's sweet as hell.
