In recent days I've been on a Mecha craze - Armored Core 6, Mech Warrior 5, Megaton Musashi, Daemon X Machina, but man... This one is failing to excite me. Despite it looking very similar to Megaton Musashi, it just seems low effort.
@gigalagaki3 ай бұрын
What's your take on Megaton Musashi? I grabbed in on Switch for cheap recently and am looking to start it soon! AC6 was incredible, and I've been keen to actually get into DxM forever!
@garythebard3 ай бұрын
@@gigalagaki Sounds like you might be infected with the Mech fever like me! Megaton Musashi is ok. Of the aforementioned games, Armored Core 6 is by far the best mechanically and stylistically. Both Megaton and Daemon are inferior on literally every metric. That said, Megaton can be fun, though the Switch frame rate makes it feel a lot choppier than it actually is. I bought it on Switch full price, picked it up on Steam at 50% off and was blown away by how smooth it felt on PC. It has cross save / cross play so that's pretty awesome. The game is fun, simple, but repetitive. Maps are hideous and uninteresting. Story / characters are charming. It's not a great game, but it has a charm to it and as a game to jump in and play for 10-30 minutes at a time to get a Mecha fix, it's decent. I know you asked about Megaton, but will also give you the low down on DXM. Daemon X Machina tries to meet Armored Core 6, but falls way short. It feels like what would've been Armored Core 4 (I mean this not in the sense of AC4 literally, but rather the way games have evolved) mechanically it feels a generation or 2 behind AC6. Has some features I like, such as being able to float indefinitely. But the weapons lack the impact of AC6, and this may be a personal preference thing, but I did not care for the story / characters. I watched half of the story but then started skipping everything to rush to the end. Now, the curveball here is I'd love to point you towards Mech Warrior 5 Mercenaries. This is the mech game I've put the most time into. It's radically different from the Japanese flavored mech stuff, but it has by far the most compelling and enjoyable game loop. Easily beating Armored Core 6 in that regard. I like AC6 better, but MW5 has a better loop. Highly recommend checking that one out. It's on game pass, and it's a ton of fun. I've got about 80 hours in that game and still playing regularly and not bored.
@gigalagaki3 ай бұрын
@garythebard WELL. You are a superstar, and I appreciate the deep dive significantly! I've been curious about MW5, and the series as a whole, for a long time. I'll take this as a sign to pull the (10 foot tall) trigger! I'll keep DxM on the back shelf, at least until I finish playthrough 3 of AC6 and am desperate for something else, and I'll start MMW for exactly what you mentioned - that quick mecha fix ^.^

Glad to see the game is just as repetitive as GB3 and there’s no significant improvements to the combat or animations. 🙄 God forbid they add mission objectives, level variety and some weight behind the combat animations and impacts. We need to start demanding more from these devs. Everyone reviewing it is giving it 8s and 9s, which is ridiculous, this series has always been a 6 at best. As far as I’m concerned, this is a low effort cash grab. They’ll still get my money, but I am not happy about it and no one else should either.
@neonhaze37253 ай бұрын
That’s your opinion honestly. It’s fairly loved in the community. And 4 is definitely waaayy better than New gundam breaker. So at least they learned from that one and didn’t do anything more from that game. I personally love the series as it’s one of the better series of the Gundam franchise
@n8dagg4343 ай бұрын
Hey, I enjoy the series myself, like I said, I’m buying the game, but it’s always been lacking in variety and we’ve waited long enough that we should expect some major improvements. I don’t want to spoil one of your favorite games or anything, but I’m going on a rant… So many fantastic mech games have come out or are coming out soon and this one is firmly at the bottom of the heap. The only thing it has going for it is the Gundam license. This game packaged with unlicensed mechs wouldn’t even make a splash in the gaming community due to its bland, repetitive gameplay loop. Customization doesn’t mean much if the game built around it offers no real intrigue. I would also argue one thing New Gundam Breaker had over the mainline entries was much larger maps with elevation changes and features that made the environments more interesting to traverse. It also gave you actual mission objectives that added some variety to the mindless combat, which gave you a reason to move around the map searching for things. Heck, I think there were even hidden bosses and items in some levels. Even though NGB was seriously flawed it did play a lot more like a musou game, which helped alleviate the series biggest shortcoming, monotonous button mashing in small arenas. NGB was a more deliberate game and it stood out because of that, it’s a shame they fumbled in so many other ways. With GB4 it’s one step forward and one step back. Sure, we’re back to the better combat, there’s more customization and you can dual wield now, but they’re largely selling us GB3 with a fresh coat of paint. In all the gameplay I’ve seen virtually nothing seems different and now we’re back to these small, lifeless, flat, featureless arenas where the only objective is to kill everything before they teleport you to the next arena. It’s literally the most repetitive game I’ve ever allowed myself to get sucked into. I’d also like to float the idea that the melee combat in the mainline series is too fast. It’s like, comically fast and immersion breaking for giant robots to move like that. Call me ignorant, but of the anime I’ve seen, the Gundam are more grounded in physics and they move more realistically. Anyways, I understand some people don’t mind doing the same thing, in the same small arenas for hundreds of hours, so they can collect the parts of their favorite Gunpla, so they can customize their mech, so they can do it all over again… But, for me (and most others), I need something more compelling than that. Flat out, this series doesn’t hold a candle to other mech games or even other musou games in terms of quality or variety, and without innovation it will never sell well outside of Japan. This formula gets really boring, really fast for anyone who doesn’t eat, sleep and breathe Gundam. If they were to simply invest in making a better product they could reach a larger audience like Space Marine 2 is about to do. I bet tons of people who’ve never engaged with Warhammer 40k before will buy that game because it looks f*cking sick. I would hope you and anyone else who’s played the game would agree the game would benefit hugely from the improvements I suggested. We’ve waited 8 years and we’re basically being sold the same damn game.

I mainly just wrote that because I hope a dev sees it and it helps them realize that they suck at innovation and they need to get with the program. 😂

Then play a different game? Gundam games have never been about exploration. The biggest maps have been in the musho game, lost war, and code fairy game. It’s always been about the different story lines, the mobile suits, pilots, and customizations. Breaker has been about grinding for parts to kit bash. This isn’t news so if you’re a tourist you don’t have to announce your departure.
