Both the Penelope & Ksi are NOT equipped with psychoframes. They are only equipped with Psycommus. Psycommu tech is fairly common by the time Unicorn takes place and I'm pretty sure Anaheim, who made both Gundams, still has that tech a decade after. The only thing new is the liberal use of funnel missiles and not the normal beam-firing ones.

@@supsup335 All Newtype weapons are based on the Psycommu. Its first use was during the One Year War, notably the Elmeth and Zeong. There have been many developments based on it like the Bio-sensor, but most notable is the Psychoframe that integrates the psycommu directly onto the MS frame. These were notably "first" used on the Sazabi and Nu. Shortly after, the Unicorn units would be much more heavily integrated with the Psychoframe tech and because of just how limitless and unknowable its true abilites are in the hands of a real newtype, as seen in the events of Unicorn and NT, it was sealed and never to be used again and for good reason.

what are your opinions on the role mafty fills in the story? Do you see mafty as the true heroes of the series, or as more of a lesser of two evils? I thought the video was good but i can't help but feel that zeta rise might have skipped of a lot of moral ambiguity that is central to hathaway. I'm probably entirely wrong, and please correct me if I am, but the takeaway from this video seems to be that, despite their methods, mafty is a righteous force for good that is taking the only correct path available to them, going so far as to say that the xi gundam is "the hope of all wishing to go up against the impossible". This view seems to ignore their flaws as a group, and the questions that the story poses about heir ideology. the story makes clear that the group mafty is an explicitly terroristic one. They carry out an attack that leaves hundreds dead simply to kill around twenty or less enemy politicians. Even the purchase and use of the xi gundam itself is a clever way of showing the audience that mafty is willing to use the exact same tactics as the enemy they fight. It also shows that, similar to the aeug in zeta, their movement is being used by anaheim to make a profit. It shows that mafty is willing to make a deal with a devil, one that is arguably worse for the earth sphere than the federation, to fight their enemies. I also thought it was weird that the battle in the city was used as an example of the brutality of the federation in this video. The catastrophic collateral damage in the battle is the direct result of the federation responding to a terror attack by mafty, and mostly the fault of gawman who stayed past the operation's time limit so he could fight longer. In the story the attack is used to force hathaway to face the consequences of his actions on those he wants to fight for first hand. I think the scene that really shows that mafty are not the heroes, or even the best faction to run the world, is the conversation hathaway has with the cab driver. the scene shows that, while the common people agree that the federation needs to be changed, the average person living day to day does not have the privalage of planning out the ideal course of all mankind. I think the the movie is trying toi call back to one of the themes of char's counterattack which was showing the folly of glorifying grand ideology. The scene where char and amuro fight inside of axis and amuro talks about how revolutions are often started by intelletuals who are out of touch with society and are unable to control the fallout of their actions. To clarify, I agree that mafty is the better of the two factions and revolution is often neccessary both in real life and in tomino's universe, but I think that movie makes a point of showing the protagonist and his followers falling into many of the same pitfalls as previous villains in the series, neglecting the opinions of those they claim to fight for. Once again, zeta rise makes great content and this was no exception, however I feel that framing the film as a feel-good, star wars og trilogy style, simple "fight the power!" story glosses over the moral complexity of the movie's conflict between the ideologies of progress through violence vs a stifling adherence to the status quo. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I see Mafty as the tragic rebellion. They're not like Zeon who had entire colonies and a government, they're just an assortment of guerilla fighters always on the move and fighting with what means they are able to. Although in the end Mafty does become like Zeon in the sense as a symbol for those oppressed by the federation.

Honestly as it is from what I know neither side is entirely right. Maybe it's because of the era we live in but both the EF and Mufty's organization doesn't feel right. This is at least me saying this prior before watching the movie. I know militaries have been build by people themselves to rebel and defend against systems but it's hard not to react negatively against a group seen as terrorists while as far as I know having seen most of Gundam they aren't completely in the wrong with what becomes of the earth federation. Other then that I'm interested in how this new interpretation will be influenced by material like Unicorn, Narrative and story changes itself and what will stay in from the original novel.

Spoilers for the movie Mafty is nonstop told by the people they supposedly fight for that they don't give a shit about the eco terrorism ideals and just want the Hunters gone. So Hathaway taking all the knowledge he's learnt.... fights and tries to kill a good man and we don't see the Hunters for the rest of the film. Lmao this movie is wank and doesn't even feel like a gundam. Not a single main or supporting character dies, even the MS pilots all survive. Where's the tragedy? What was the message of the film? That Mafty is chasing lofty ideals and ignoring the real oppressive force? I went in with just one expectation, that I would get to see Hathaway die and we'd finally get some consequences for him murdering Chan. But no, apparently this is a trilogy now and nothing really happens in this movie. So kinda feels like they should have made it either way longer, use their time better and cut out most of Gigi and Kenneth since they have nothing to do with the final conflict of the movie, have this as an OVA series so it would be understandable why there was such a slow start. Doing any of those things would have improved the story but instead we got a beautiful looking movie with no substance

Honestly, the first movie is faithful to the light novels with some changes. According to the director, the movie is more of a question for Hathaway from an English translated interview on Twitter. The second movie would be more interesting as he is going to explain why Hathaway choose char instead of amuro ideals. I had rewatch the movie again as the director is an animator so he is trying to express his story visually. Honestly think he is trying to do a patlabor 2 style with his movie and he pull a lot of notes from genocydol organs. The movie is just setting up for the next two movies. It is a solid 6/7 out of 10 in my view.

@@murray5105 70s and 80s Tomino thought war was a a destructive but sometimes necessary evil, and that the good side in one conflict can become as evil as their enemies in another (Titans) Gundam is alot more complicated than just "war is bad". Tomino only became super anti-war in the new millennium. Also even if you disagree with the authors themes and messages, you can still enjoy any art regardless. Even leftists do this with artists like Morrissey.
