Nasi lemak is quite different from fried rice, the rice is cooked with coconut milk and if its freshly made, itll fill you up for a long time, making it the breakfast of choice for most Malaysians, it is usually served with either Chicken rendang ( a type of curried chicken ) or some sambal sotong ( squid cooked in chili paste )

With the fried rice I do believe the white powder was powdered coconut milk I would have added it with the water and the anchovies. Yeah that is a jasmine rice. That curry looks amazing. Yeah overcooked chicken but at least it is real chicken and not separated chicken that was reassembled into a slurry. These look really good. Thanks for the awesome review.
@effendyhamzah75827 жыл бұрын
that's right, mix rice and that white powder altogheter before pour in water, after everything is set serve wih anchovies (it is nasi lemak acccesories beside boil egg, fried peanut and slice cucumber) & chilli sauce :-)

@Randomkloud5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gundog, great video. one issue though, the one labelled "nasi lemak" isn't a fried rice. when you were rehydrating the rice the white powder (coconut milk powder) should have been added, this will give the rice a kind of rich creamy taste ("lemak"). then the chili paste is added to the side and not mixed. if mixed it would become bland. so a spoon of rice and some chili go together so you get the kick of concentrated chili paste moderated by rice. the litle fried anchovies are also salted so thats where the salt element comes from. This is common sense to malaysians but of course we donn't expect everyone to just know it. Didnt the box have specific instructions?
@gundog43145 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips as I have one or two of these left. Cheers

Bro, for the Nasi lemak you should mix the seasoning with the rice when you add in the water. And for the anchovies you should just put it after 15 minute. Thanks for your review man by the way.

Do you have Malaysian or Indonesian restaurants near you, gundog? You might have to save up for a plane trip over there. You will NOT regret it. You can eat a different meal every night and not repeat yourself for a couple of years. Malaysian curry is influenced by the Indian migrants, but it's a whole different experience. Ditto for Chinese curries from Malaysia.

The vegetable in the Kampung styled Fried Rice is water spinach, a must have ingredient in order to make it deserve the title "Kampung styled“. We call it "kangkong" (pronounced kung-kong with a hard "k") locally. The stems are now used by some gourmet places in Southeast Asia as bio-degradable drinking straws.

You probably know this by now but I just found this video lol, but 'Nasi Lemak' isn't a fried rice. It's coconut milk rice. I haven't eaten that one, but I believe you should've put the white powder first together with the water. The sambal (red thing) and the anchovies should be added later. That's the standard nasi lemak. But thanks for the video, I've never eaten this myself. As for the vegetable, it looks like kangkung (water spinach), which cultivation is banned in America.

The "little fish" are called ikan bilis and are little anchovy-style fish. Great to mix with peanuts when you're having a beer- although that's not halal! The rice for the nasi lemak should have been cooked in coconut milk, not chicken stock or water.
