Dude, this game made my childhood. I learned to get gud with this game and spend 10 years to find the last flower in the Desert tank (Only with Steyr since she got the radar.) I love how rewarding Steyr and Dee played because they are a more busted ver. of Wakle and Kar. Both Steyr and Dee got extremely strong jump game because they are more lightweight. Also, Steyr could even dash forward if you tapped the forward button twice and duck as well by holding L1+R1+X which was very useful for avoiding the homing bomb. Nothing mention her default Laser Weapon Shockwave can still act as a collectibles tool and scouting the area, it only consumes energy when you fire it.

This game has been living in my memories rent free for over 20 years, I just couldn’t for the life of me remember its name. I also couldn’t remember if it was in first person or third person. So one day, I literally pulled out a list of every single PS1 game and looked up each one in alphabetical order on KZbin, until I got to the letter G and recognised the game. These games made our childhood… Gungage, Wild Arms 2, Tomba 2, Herc’s Adventures, Sim Theme Park, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot 3, Vigilante 8 2nd offense, Ace Combat 3, so many damn good games to mention. … There’s just one old PS1 game I couldn’t remember or find. It’s an RPG, with an open world view where you venture and it switches to a turn based game when you encounter enemies, kinda like Wild Arms or Final Fantasy. I just remember that your character(s) could transform and go “super saiyan” altering their appearance and gaining power. I also remember that during your ventures, you’re constantly being followed by an enemy who I think had white hair. Also I want to say that there was a giant worm monster burrowing under sandy dunes, but I might just be mixing up different games. I wish I could remember what it was called… or if anyone could help me. Thank you for tuning in to my TED talk.

Oh this is definitely "for me", gameplay alone has sold me on this, thanks for shedding a light on this one! On my end, i definitely UNO-reverse-card recommend you the classic Armored Core series, since it's battle/aiming system is a close match to this one. Similarly to Gungage tho, it's not for everybody.
@Aboveup
@Aboveup 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, I had one of the Armored Core games on PS3 and really enjoyed it. Reminds me that I still need to pick up Daemon X Machine one of these days, since it was done by the lead developer of AC, Kenichi Tsukuda. I remember watching gameplay of that and picking up on Char and Amuro's VAs being in that game and basically playing similar characters in that.

@@Aboveup Daemon Machina... isn't really interesting, at least in single player. I was really attracted by the mood/atmosphere + indirect plot line of AC3 and kept playing it because of it. DXM has none of that, just mission based scenario like MGS5.

Hey there...really well done review. I was doing some research for a song from this that I'll be playing on my podcast and figured I'd mention that the music is supposedly also credited to Sota Fujimori, which makes sense given some of the song's styles. I like that you highlighted each character individually and discussed their differences. This seems like a really cool game. Thanks for reviewing it!

Nice review. Just want to add two things: 1) Steyr's shield also reflects bullets 2) Sota Fujimori is credited for the music since he made most of them. Michiru Yamane only made a few. This is Sota Fujimori's 1st game in Konami before making music for the Dance Dance Revolution series.

i love this game... i call it contra 3D, cuz, well, some sorta it is... story kinda same element as alien cell, rebels, monsters (well,yeah, wich contra hasnt?)... some monster are from castlevania like that fishheads, or that giant moth boss kinda same as sega`s castlevania... That bugs around Tower, im pretty sure a saw something same in contras. But most important - that Kard Berdysh is only guy who have diffirent types of weapon and this weapon is - long laser, aim rocket, granadegun - same as Ray from hard corps.... well he is also have a flamethrower as Fang)) Location content is also a bit changing by selected difficulty. Music is damn sexy. location maked pretty rude for 1999, but atleast its idea pretty original. Sad thing is that game is very short. This makes me feel that game is kinda release as quick doned beta version. Still like it

IMO, controls are only "bad/clunky" if the game doesn't factor the controls into the gameplay. It's why N64 shooters like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark work well despite lacking the 2nd stick, as Rare were smart enough to give enemies a long drawn out shooting animation to give you time to aim or take cover. Those games also become completely trivial when played with a mouse, as Rare did not intend for the player to have that level of accuracy and precision. Another example would be how the early Tomb Raider games use a grid based level design to account for the tank controls, it makes lining up your jumps a lot easier. Also, I'm pretty sure the girl was named after the Steyr arms manufacturer and so her name should be pronounced the same way.

I think you can have interesting gameplay made around autoaim rather than pretending all people can shoot with a thumbstick as good as with a mouse. Embrace the limitations and put the challenge into other contexts. I wouldn't say to remove manual aim but make it for special cases. A bit like autotargeting in Souls games, with people not using it and make interesting things like attacking heads with a precise attack to stun. An issue i have is about hiding that the game is helping you and pretending you are good. Huge hitboxes, controller aim assist or things like really forgiving collisions in platformers. Celeste dev explained all the concepts they implemented to have your character land successfully even if the jump isn't as good. Still a difficult game but I'd rather let the player know what you really have. Autoaim with a certain gun, or that if you miss the jump you attach on the ledge and climb instead of just landing without issues. It's about the right balance that deliver a different experience, a mix between deception and what kind of challenges the player needs to confront. Another example of different challenge is gravity. Easy misstep and fall from a plaftform in Souls games or the Dragon's Dogma tumble animation when you reach a ledge and let you have mechanics with ledges while falling. Some like frustration, some very forgiving gameplay. There's a world of options and i think we can still explore them instead of following the same formulas :) One of the games that really embraces autoaim in my opinion is the super rare to collect Saturn game called Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru, an almost boss rush 2.5D where you attack with magic powers (you are like a ninja exorcist) with an autoaim reticle that targets the nearest place in a monster and you can switch around. It's a pretty interesting concept and challenging because you need to focus on certain points as soon as possible because it's a long session of fights and health is limited. I read the concept is similar to Alisia Dragoon on the Megadrive but never tried that. One time having both auto and manual aim made me not understanding what to really use. In Bot Vice i tried to use manual thinking it was the "pro" technique but the game throws so many enemies that autoaim is really the way to go (unless i am dumb :P).

Wow this looks 100% up my alley!! Definitely gonna be giving it a shot before too long! On the subject of free aim vs manual aim, I think Jet Force Gemini on the N64 (which this game sorta reminds me of...) has one of my favorite styles. You can mostly just run and gun and your characters will auto-aim, but you can also go into an aiming mode for precision shots on enemies that are flying or are far away. Most people I see online play almost exclusively in aiming mode for some reason and it’s a tragedy cause that just sucks all of the fun out of it.
@leonardoferreira2372
@leonardoferreira2372 3 жыл бұрын
It took me literally decades to realize that there was auto-aim akin to what Rare did with Goldeneye, and it does make the game a hell of a lot more fun (especially when facing larger numbers of ants). I do appreciate the aiming mode for flying enemies, feels like a proto Gears of War in that sense. Just goes to show how amazingly forward-thinking JFG was.
