I worked on the C-5. On one occasion, I was en route to help repair one of our birds. In the troop compartment with us was a group of green berets going on a mission. We Bull shitted for a bit, but not too long because they were preparing for their mission. They thanked us for our service, and I reciprocated. They understood they needed us (transportation of goods and gear) as much as we needed them (they do the dirty work). Not all service members hate on other branches.

I remember applying for a job at General Dynamics in Ft Worth, Texas in 1973 to work on this airplane's weapons system design. They called me after 3 years to come for an interview. I was training to be a helicopter pilot by then. Excellent aircraft 👍🇺🇸

This is the way a refueling should be done. The boom operator did his job without extraneous comments and these were skilled receiver pilots. To understand the physical exertion of a boom operator, lay on your stomach on a bed with your head over the edge. Now lay there for half an hour. Retired CMSgt and former instructor boom operator.

Silly question: Since the KC-135 is nothing but a giant flying gas can, does it draw fuel for _its own engines_ from the same tanks it carries for the planes it refules? Or does it have its own specific tanks isolated from the rest it's carrying?

The tanks the engines draw from are in the wings of the 135. The fuel for the receiving aircraft is in what used to be the baggage compartments in the bottom of the fuselage.

All 10 tanks of fuel carried can be offloaded minus a few hundred pounds in the main wing tanks. They get drained into the forward and aft body tanks where they are then pumped into the receiver aircraft.

It probably is, because you can actually feel what the plane is doing, and the changes in air speed when manipulating the throttle. You get feedback. That's one thing you'll never get with a simulator, and thus it makes it tougher. Flying by the "seat of the pants" is definitely a real thing.
