Years ago I went to an airshow in Atlantic City NJ. You would sit right on the beach and watch the whole show. There were plenty of stunt planes, military fighters, bombers, historical planes and even the Thunderbirds. But two planes made my jaw drop. The first was the Harrier jump jet. It hovered about 100' above the water. The best part of the show was when a B-2 Spirit came up the shore. You couldn't hear the aircraft until it passed you and turned east and began to climb. At that point the jet exhaust was pointed right at us and that was when we finally heard that beautiful machine. Crazy how quiet it was but even crazier how loud it was when you actually had the exhaust facing you. Almost like it was impossible to be that way

Wow, I thought the B1B was a cool sight - then the B2 turned up! Holy sh*t that was an awesome sight. Thanks for an epic video, cheers.

Thanks for making this video available. Even as someone that understands little about the various aircraft, I can see the incredible advantage of fueling=up without the need to return to base. One question please. I noticed on another of your vids that a fighter appeared to be 'holding' position close by. Is this as a planned defensive matter or was the plane simply waiting it's turn? I take it that the 'tanker' would be an easy target.
@Gung_Ho_Vids9 жыл бұрын
Bill Blinky That plane was either waiting, or just fueled. These operations are very well protected by various other aircraft, or these events take place over protected airspace. Thanks for stopping by. Come again anytime.

+Gung Ho Vids Good video, I was a boom operator on KC-135A models which were better known as Water Wagons or Steam Jets since we still used water injection for heavyweight takeoffs. I have 2443.4 hours in A models over a 10 year period from March 78 to Aug of 88.

Charles Pierce Thanks for commenting. It's very cool to hear from someone who actually did this. I have never heard the terms "Water Wagon" or "Steam Jet". I will borrow that maybe in my future vids with your permission. I was Navy from 78-86. Please stop by anytime. People need to hear stuff like what you just said.

+Gung Ho Vids The terms "Water Wagons" or "Steam Jets" were never meant as something derogatory. It was a term of affection and it is okay to use the term. The idea was pump water in the first stage of a jet engine increases the density of the air giving more thrust out the back. On the -135's that still had the original J-57 engines and on B-52D's thru the G's the water injection is the reason for the black smoke during takeoffs. We could only use water injection from +20F to 100F, below 20F or above 100F it didn't help. They tested a fully loaded -135A at Edwards AFB in summer to find out how much runway it really needed to a max weight takeoff. Edwards AFB has 15,000 feet of concrete runway and several miles of lake bed if needed. A -135A model at max weight used all 15,000ft of concrete and 2,000ft of lake bed to get airborne. SAC runways were normally 13,500ft long but I am not sure if that included the overruns or not. If you watch the movie "Final Countdown" with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen, shortly before that movie came out I refueled some of the aircraft from the USS Nimitz over the North Sea. I had a F-14 tomcat sneak in and get 2900lbs of fuel and didn't talk to me but I had his aircraft number so we still charged the Nimitz for the fuel.
