I love that Lindsay immediately linked Komugi's nen to Zepile's. It means she's understanding the show 100%. And that is something not everyone can do during the first watch. GG Lindsay.

I'm not saying Lindsay is a 200 IQ beast who can instantly understand things the common human can't, but I know people who watched the show and still don't know some facts about nen. The King is basically having an identity crisis. It's been only a few weeks/months since he was born and from the moment he was born, he thought that he was the most powerful being in existence and that he was superior to every being in any way. But then came Komugi. The first sign of change in King's personality was when they made the bet. King tohought that Komugi's life was her most important posession and that he could take this posession away from her with ease. But he was proven wrong and he realized Komugi's resolve was far stronger than his. Here, the King started having doubts about himself but these doubts never came to his mind until Komugi asked his name. Realizing that he has no identity of his own, the King drenched into an existential crisis where he started questioning the purpose of his own existence and his power.

The eagle that attacks Komugi is the same eagle that is startled off by the King’s Ren. We’re told how terrifying it is to be nenless in front of someone’s Ren so that eagle was probably in fight or flight and just picked on Komugi out of fear

18:00 Go back and watch the King's monologue in front of his bodyguards again. At first you see the eagle perched off in the distance minding it's own business. Then once the King releases his aura, it immediately drives the eagle crazy, overcome by the bloodlust of the King's aura, it went into a frenzy on the first being it found, which was Komugi.

@@0cidd0 Exactly. In fact we can go even deeper in all this eagle think. The first time we saw it was when in enter in contact with Netero NEN who was preparing himself to attack the castle, so the eagle was influenced an travel to the castle. Once it reached the castle it was influenced by Meruem who was thinking of his right to abuse and kill those weaker than him, so the eagle did exactly the same thing Meruem was thinking and that is wonderful because that allow him to inmediately realize his own ideology about power and violence was wrong.

i love Meruem's denial in this episode along with his search for identity. the way he comes so close to his realization, then throws it away, because surely this just means he's better than all else, and then when Komugi's actually in danger, he eats his words.

The only thing we really know about Togashi's early life are from the interviews. His parents owned a paper shop and his older sister and younger brothers also became "cartoonists". There's not really much other significant information other than mentioning himself being "just a kid" when asked about his childhood. There's plenty of information on his later life, but not much on early life.

@Afreshio11 ай бұрын
BTW Carson observation of Togashi depicting lots of family and parental hard expectations are just the normalcy in Japanese society. Every Japanese kid is expected at some point to perform highly and put several masks to conform to society. Really harsh culture. In every other manga is very common to find characters burdened by family expectations. Funny enough the MC is usually less preocupied by that burden and is allowed to be carefree. Look at Gon, Goku, Naruto, Ichigo. They are rebels in a Japanese traditional framing. Its made on purpose as the mangaka/editors know that their MC must appeal to kids and at the same time provide the essential escapism to older readers.❤

I always enjoy watching your reactions. It was interesting to imagine Pfuh's perspective on the king and the author Togashi's personal relationship with his parents. Another point of view. Perhaps Togashi was the father of his second child when he drew this story. King against komugi, "I don't know what to do with this creature" I think this is Togashi's point of view about his child.

I guess if I want to make literature nerd comments, here is better than most places, so: that comment the king makes, that he likes the fact his movements are limited by the board... makes me think of Tolstoi's War and Peace. Many situations on the book hinge on an idea Tolstoi describes in the end, about the nature of freedom and power. For him, the person with the most freedom in the world is the one who has nothing, because their actions will affect pretty much no one. No one cares, the lack of power means that few people would be influenced by anything they do. So this person does not have to think about others that much, and their actions are less burdened by the effect they would have on others. On the other hand, the most powerful are not free at all. Any move they make will affect so many people, there's so much interest on each and every decision, that even simple stuff, like the clothes they'll wear or where they'll eat are limited. So he says we tend to look at powerful people in awe (he talks about Napoleon, which was incredibly admired at his time), when in reality a lot of what they do is modelled by "the board", the needs around them, the pressures of others, and they can't really notice their actual lack of freedom. Tolstoi is kinda too hardcore in the way he talks about this stuff, as if the powerful had absolute zero freedom and who had the power was completely irrelevant, etc... to a point where the thing becomes a little fatalistic, but it has some truth to it. And Meruem, as powerful as he is, moves within the constraints of his position as king, every action he takes revolves around the fact he must bring his "people" to a certain place chosen not by him, but by his placing in the hierarchy - and in this ep, finally, he starts to consider the limits of that position. The things he Must Do as king start to be confronted with the possibility that, maybe, that's not what he really Wants to do, and this lack of real freedom starts to materialize in a way... or at least I think this is a possible interpretation.

As an aspirant storyteller Togashi is my north. I dont know how he comes up with such amazing characters. Specially Komugi and Meruem dynamics. He reads lots of manga and books, that we certainly know of. I always get this dorama/soap opera archetype from both characters (the Prince and the poor but secretly special maid) so I cannot help but to wonder if thats the source and he adapted that common and overused mythology to this arc with such a great taste. Or he got the idea reading shojo manga recommended by his wife. We also know Togashi is not above "cheap" mass produced "art" like idol pop music and pervy doujinshi. Shit, his brother is a doujinshi author. Anyways what a great achievement in story telling and character developmenr. Meruem and Komugi are the beating heart of this giganormous arc.

20:19 one key word that keeps appearing in this arc is "shinka"= evolution, here with Komugi's awakening the King discovers one side of 'the infinite potential of humanity for evolution' 😉: anyone even the physically weakest being has the potential to top others and can inspire admiration... the ants value raw physical power above everything but they're also part human and discovering humans means discovering your own self... and the King doesn't even know his name! and it's the first name he's interested in someone's name... The arc itself, the characters, ants and humans, evolve from simple-minded and one-dimensional to complex and conflicted...the writing is so good ^^ The names topic is so interesting bc relevant irl so it appears in many fictions including mangas (hope they'll watch Monster at some point) and I find interesting here the difference btw the name your mother/parent gave you which carries meaning and wishes and a name you'll choose for yourself. Here the King wants to know his birth name and when the RG suggest he chooses a name for himself he doesn't seem pleased by the idea... the weight and information and memories your name carries is such an interesting thing to think about and the name "Komugi" became now so important 28:48 I really liked the comment about the way the King jumped in to save her and also the way he crouched, the obvious concern on his face and the way he's so flustered he doesn't touch her like she's so fragile she could break into his hands...the imagery of that scene is so brilliant!

Does anyone notice a trend among reactors who get correct predictions or recall forgotten plot points that foreshadow current eve ts? When they get praised, there are those who refuse to give them any credit - especially towards female reactors. I saw this a lot with Sheera now, Lindsay. So many excuses were thrown out like "they must have seen this before" or "they must have read ahead in the manga" or "they probably got told by patreon members" etc etc. Sometimes viewers forget that WE are watching this for the dozenth time so we know every detail so it becomes second nature to us. But some people are seeing this show for the first time.
