Gunman Chronicles (also known as Gunman TC, Half-Life: Gunman) is a 2000 first-person shooter that started off as a Quake mod before becoming its own unique thing.
In this video, we'll go from start to finish and see what Gunman Chronicles is all about.
It even has monkeys with stogies so it's already a 10/10.

Do you know the Gunman Chronicles textures were literally sculpted by hand? Like they LITERALLY had their artist built tiles, metallic surfaces, dinosaur profiles using clay he then airbrushed!

The reason Mary Kae Irvin and Jim French who voice acted in this game ended up in later titles that were made by Valve is because Marc Laidlaw sat in on recording sessions for this game. He liked their acting and wanted to make use of them for HL2 and so on. I so love this game, played this when it was new and was super fascinated having a new singleplayer game on the HL engine. Since then there's been a ton of TC mods for HL that are all pretty sweet too. I really like the other SP games on Source too, Dark Messiah, VTMB, and Sin Episodes. Still need to try EYE.

One of my favourite things about the aesthetics of Gunman Chronicles are the textures, which were actually made physically and then scanned into the game!

I have the original game on disk, if you input the CD key into STEAM, you get the HL1 Generations Pack, I take that as Valve saying they recognise the game but due to the rights being Rewolf and Sierra, they can't sell it. Also you didn't mention the Electro Gun's BFG Mode (Range: Long, Power: High Beam, Lightning: Ball), Kills everything but uses massive ammo.

This game has to be one of the best mods that is so overlooked. It opened up so many good possibilities and as someone said helped the female citizen and Grigori's voice actors to join HL2 Also this game's code and assets have been used for quite a good bunch of Goldsrc mods, for example Half-Life: Invasion [AKA French Half-Life 2] used the tank's code and model for it's tank and the code for head gibbing. Conspiracy in the Shadow had also used a lot of Gunman assets for it's gameplay. And Poke646 used Xenome sounds for that xen spore launcher thing, maybe some other sounds too but I don't recall. Either way it was absolutely helpful for future games and I'm happy it's being talked about here. The development history is also very interesting and I'd recommend taking a look at it. Gunman Chronicles is an absolute gem, beautiful level design and atmosphere, very unique configurable weapons- try out all the possible combinations with the MULE and Chemical gun. I'm covering the Beta/press demo build on my channel. The first video was done a few years ago and I've just picked it up again... Was sidetracked doing other stuff.

I loved the intro train ride. If you noclip out, you can see how they achieved the "artificial gravity" illusion. I also wondered why the Gunman are so pale. But also in Goldsource Half Life, everyone is pretty much pale. Maybe it has something to do with the limited colors mode.

Man, this was a fun one, great video! I went to Best Buy to get this as a kid because I was SO into Half-Life 1 I wanted all the expansions and all the mods and maps, I couldn't get enough. I remember being SO confused about what this game actually was, but loving it for it's weirdness and creativity. I always remember there being a glitch in the intro space tram ride where the lady on the radio glitches and says "Major Archer" like 3 or 4 times in a row and I used to imitate that until my parents told me to stop. One thing I always thought was funny about the General is that he literally does the same thing you did to him to his people on the Mainframe's planet, and so casually too. I don't know if that was intentional or if it was just accidentally sort of the opposite of his characterization. I always thought being abandoned would have calcified his whole, 'leave no man behind' kind of mindset. You briefly mentioned the launcher pistol, but it's actually super cool! It's really like 9 guns in one, you mix the three ingredients to change the way the gun works, it has so many variations in it, I had fun experimenting with it back when this first came out. I agree with you about the tank sections, it felt like they had such a cool setup and kind of dropped the ball on it with way the levels were structured. I'm super glad you liked this though, it has a special place in my gaming heart! Really hugely ambitious game and I agree with you, definitely a cut above what most mods were doing at the time, so I never felt like I wasted my money.

The choice to model the members of the various factions after cowboys and Union/Confederate soldiers from the American Civil War, but with a futuristic twist, is such a bizarre and unique idea. It gives the game a really strange vibe and I kind of love it. I've known about this game for a bit now but never really considered playing it tbh, but hey, didn't know it was abandonware, might as well give it a shot and see if I like it. It looks pretty wild for sure.

Ah, that was a fun review to watch! Glad to see that even 20 years later players still remember what crazy game we built there. I still remember most of the locations I built in the video. Sorry you got lost in the final chapter a bit. The idea was to be a little less linear compared to the others, but it was difficult to communicate without time for more UI/UX elements. And yes we did play System Shock II just a year or so prior lol

I really like the truce arc with The Mainframe, even if it does indeed run a bit long. You just extremely seldom see that sort of diplomacy in games, let alone having your ex foe actually mean it all and stay true to the deal.

It was awesome. The mainframe not being evil was a good choice too, instead being just as much of a victim as you were in the story and only coming to realize that after all other options were exhausted.

It's odd how this was 1 year before Halo CE, and 4 before Half-Life 2, and yet there's many similar elements those two games have with this one; a facility overrun with a biological weapons going rampant as an AI tries to contaminate/clean them - Halo's 343 Guilty Spark and the Flood. Vehicle segments with obstacles that force the player to get out of the vehicle frequently with puzzles or combat, Half-Life 2. Mean most likely just story elements from novels or films, but still odd how similar these cases are...

I bought this when it released back in the day since I was a huge half life fan. The general sentiment of magazine reviews at the time was roasting it for being outdated visually, also hating on the vehicle gimmicks and weapons. I think the game not being available on steam after that launched + not being a free mod was the main reason it got sort of lost in time.

The closest a games got to this level of weapon interaction for a long time would be the first soldier of fortune with different weapon stances with some weapons(on top of alt fires) impacting where the muzzle climb/spread would tend towards and in its sequel the OICW was an insane customizable weapon with different vision modes and programmable airburst grenades.

At the end of the game during the final confrontation with the general, he allegedly implies to you, that you, Major Archer/the gun-man are in fact the G-man. I remember reading this discussion on some very old half life forum many years ago.. It would be very interesting if Valve decided to elaborate more on this or at least to add Gunman Chronicles to Steam as an official Half-Life game. Imagine an official Gunman Chronicles remaster by Valve with player in-game model as G-man in the gunman uniform. It would be amazing.. Its so sad that this game has so low recognition despite it being so good and enjoyable. The futuristic wild-west planet and the space cowboys were my favourite aspects of the game. EDIT: I remembered another thing from that old forum. After the defeat of the general and his space cowboys, the gun-men and xenome race became allies and shared their technology with one another. Xenome race were into the teleporation and interspace travel stuff and the acquiring of this technology by the Gun-men unit have changed the events in the universe forever. Our protagonist Major Archer went on to become an intergalactic agent nicknamed G-man (Gun-man)…

31:46 Honestly Halo did it well in the second level. You have to activate a Light Bridge which is like a minute long round trip up to the button and back if you're strictly walking the way and the whole arena is big enough for you to use the vehicle to clear it out and gives you a place to learn how the Warthog handles in a low threat environment where you can get a feel of it all while under fire. It's equal parts wonder and mystery building set-piece and combat aided training to get the player used to what they WILL be doing in a Warthog later on while also allowing the player a way to tackle the whole encounter how they so chose both during first time run throughs or repeat plays. Sure you can clear the Covies out on foot or you can use the 'Hog and let the gunner take care of things or run every little Alien Ba- I mean every Grunt, Jackal, and Elite over or you can run up the side, push the button, run back down, and drive away.

Back you couldn't just release "it's the same thing but kinda the different somewhat, sure it's the same maps but we changed... menu? now, 60 bucks please". It's VERY common nowadays, so people expect games to be identical, but back then everyone expected revolutions left and right, new genres, new tech, new horizons. Gaming industry were booming with talents and bold ideas, it was changing rapidly. And Gunman Chronicles was no revolution, just a rock solid shooter with interesting style and lore.
