Gunman subdued while trying to shoot pastor at Pittsburgh-area church

As a church service was being livestreamed near Pittsburgh, a man jumped from his seat and aimed a gun at the pastor, but the gun jammed and the suspect was subdued. Police said the body of a man was later found in the suspect's home. NBC News' Emilie Ikeda reports.

It is impossible for a semi auto handgun to jam on the first round because the round is already in the chamber. A jam occurs when the gun is loading itself after firing. If the loaded round fails to fire, it is called a misfire. That said, it’s not really visible if he pulled the trigger.

A jam is a failure to extract, failure to eject, or a failure to feed that causes the slide not to go into battery when the pistol is loading the next round. If the slide is already in battery and a round loaded, the slide cannot “jam” because it does not move again until the loaded round ignites. Also, I meant the first round fired in a sequence, not of the day. Technically speaking, a “malfunction” is a parts breakage, and a “stoppage” is an interruption in the cycling of the firing mechanism. So, yes, you are right, a malfunction can happen at any point in operation, but that’s not what I’m talking about. If this guy did pull the trigger and the gun didn’t go off, it’s not because of a failure to cycle (i.e. jam). The cause would have to have been a light primer strike, broken firing pin, or a broken trigger bar - something along those lines. Edit: YT has deleted my last two replies, so I’ll put them here even though you won’t be notified. A failure to feed can’t happen on the first round because it is loaded manually by racking the slide. Maybe you meant failure to fire. My point was that the news media don’t know anything about guns and used the wrong term; that’s all, not that *nothing* can prevent the gun from going off on the first round.
