This video was super helpful! I just thought I would add in the information that if people are concerned about the crash test rating that the Medium Gunner crate is only tested up to 45lbs, and the Intermediate is tested up to 75 lbs. That needs to be taken into account alongside the actual height & length of the dog. My heeler is a weird size - 32 inches long, 20 inches at the shoulder, but a solid 50 lbs and still growing. I didn't end up going with Gunner because I need to fit two crates in my vehicle and the intermediate would be too big, but if I had, I would have had to go with the intermediate in order to be within the crash rate standards for safety.

Thanks so much for posting this video. It's been so helpful. Like one of the other posters, I've been looking at Gunner crate sizes for a corgi. In the Gunner web site reviews, it seems most corgi folks go with a small or medium. For my petite girl (22 pounds and less than 10 inches at the withers), I've ordered a small and am cautiously optimistic it will be a good fit for her. The corgi build is the challenge. If the small doesn't work for her length, it can be exchanged for a medium. The potential extra shipping costs are worth it, to try to get her the safest fit.

Gunner recommended an intermediate for my pup but seeing the fit with your dogs I think mine is definitely too big. My dog is fully grown at about 43 lbs and 22 inches at the shoulders. With an intermediate curled up in the back he takes up probably just over 1/2 of the kennel. I was worried about sizing down, but this makes me more comfortable to switch to a medium. We upgraded from an intermediate Ruffland, so it's interesting to see how the sizes vary across different brands.

So are the dogs not supposed to be able to stand in the kennel? Is it only for car travel and sleeping?
@dog9000pippin8 ай бұрын
Travel/car crate sizing is much different than at home crate sizing. For traveling, you don't want room for your dog to be able to be thrown around. At home, they need room to be able to stand, sit, stretch, lay down stretched out, etc.

She weighs 29 pounds and is 18” at the shoulder - now my dilemma is if she should ride in a medium or small? My concern with the small is that she’s rather long - 33” from nose to base of tail. Do you have a recommendation of which kennel would be safest for her?

What would you recommend for a 40 lb Border Collie for traveling overseas in the cargo hold of a plane? I'm PCSing to Japan and am trying to find a good fit that is going to be comfortable enough for him to ride 14 hours in a plane in. He's 19-20 inches high at the shoulder and 30-31 when laying with his front paws stretched in front of him. I want him to be safe but comfortable for a 14 hour plane ride.

You’ll need to look up the airlines requirements for kennel size to your dogs size. From what I understand there a certain total weight requirement for dog and kennel. I also believe your dog needs to be able to stand up straight and not touch the roof of the kennel including ears and be able to turn around. Again, you need to check the international airline requirements.

I have a heeler mix that’s 40-45 lbs and 20 inches at the shoulder. He rides in an intermediate Ruffland right now, but would a medium gunner kennel be too small? I love the locking doors on the gunner, but the intermediate would be too big to fit into the cab of my Tacoma.

My Heeler is about 20in at the shoulder but 30lbs and she can turn around easily, however, if she was much bigger I don’t know she could move in to turn around as easily. Love your Videos but in Europe it is illegal to transport dogs in boxes if they can not stand upright and even have an additional 10cm of air space when they sitting. I’m a little shocked by the size selection for the Aussies that small would be better, but I’m happy they travel in a Medium. 😁
@sprucehounds5163 жыл бұрын
I agree, that very snug fit is something one sees for hunting dogs, but it in no way meets air travel criteria, nor does it work well for extended road travel, in my opinion.
@notoriousanvil44653 жыл бұрын
@@sprucehounds516 its recommended in the sense of dog safety in the event of an accident, not comfortability for the animal. sure the larger one is better for travel regulations but in a vehicle accident the extra room would cause more harm. i guess the recommendation depends on your use case

Based upon what I learned on the Gunner website the deciding factor when sizing these kennels should always be safety. The dogs in your video look far too small for the intermediate. They would tend to slip and slide during travel and perhaps be hurt if a minor accident or worse occurred. Of course I am making an assumption that the primary reason for buying Gunner brands is for travel due to their premium price.
