In fact I do remember a talk with a guy who was managing a boat for some eccentric millionaire, and yes this owner did indeed want several historical cannons installed on deck, complete with one guy employed as a gunsmith to maintain them, and fire them off for ceremonial occasions. Interesting to see customs dealing with that - trying to confiscate them off the deck?

I GUARANTEE that more than one had a gun on board. The vast majority of those who have a gun on board don't tell anyone and don't admit it. Many of them will go as far as to act like they are against it in the first place. It mitigates many problems, and there's nothing to gain from others knowing you're armed...

You've never watched Customs guys search your boat, have you? Guaranteed they've thought of every hiding spot you have, and quite a few you haven't. When their only job is searching for stuff, even guys that don't look overly proficient get good at the one job they've got. I've been to shady places where I might feel better with a firearm, but chances are, they're also the places you least want to be in Prison for having an illegal firearm. The Bribes to get yourself out are probably more than anyone would steal anyway.

I've made my living as an oilfield service vessel captain (retired), traveling worldwide. Personal firearms for protection was always prohibited in foreign ports. However, as part of our safety gear, we were issued a 12 gauge Stevens line throwing gun. It shot a steel rod connected to a spool of messenger line. Always stowed mine in my state room, just in case....

It could happen, but how is having a gun going to help?. In most situations you would be outnumbered and in their area. If you are lucky and were able to fight them off then your problems will really start. The local police will just lock you up in a third world country unles you can pay your way out and your national government or embasy will be unable to lift a finger to help. Leave your gun at home and switch your brain on is the best advice I can give.

In a lot of Countries if you do that illegally by their Laws you will spend at least the next few years in Prison, and it will cost you everything you own to get out. And the chances are in a lot of poorer Countries any assailant won't have a firearm. America is the only Country other than the Philippines where everyone has a gun. Defending yourself with a fish spear or a gaff hook might be OK, but an illegal firearm will get you crucified. @James Adams - A lot of SE Asian Countries won't feed you enough in Prison to be a 'Real Man'. That kind of comes with the territory.

a guy I know who sailed around the world alone had an electric fence around the railing and a slingshot and a bag of half inch hexnuts. in one incident, the fence did the job and protected him, and once he had to shoot at an intruder on his boat with a hexnut. the formalities with guns, he said, are far too complicated if you sail internationally.

Oh, and by the way. Never sleep with an unlocked companionway. In Guatemala and Honduras sailors have been killed or hurt when they found intruders standing in their cabins and trying to mount an ineffectual defense from their bunk. Steel bars in hatches and companionways are worth there weight in gold. Be safe!

Guatemala and Honduras are two of the most dangerous places on the planet. You have to turn off AIS transmit because the pirates literally use it to find privately owned yachts, it tells them how big it is and if it’s privately owned. Big boat, big target. Just steer well clear of places like that.

Since I first watched this, I've met a person who was attacked while at anchor and he had a gun. He shot the gunman driving the boat, apparently killing him. The others fired back but one of them took over the helm and motored away at a high speed.

Absolutely right about not leaving any gear out. We were docked at a marina for 1 night in Bimini while we went to "The Compleat Angler" and the beach tiki bar. Everything not locked down was stolen such as snorkeling gear left out to dry, the U.S. flag from the back stay, a sun shower bag, and even the Bahamian flag hung on the port stays. On that same trip, we first entered the Bahamas officially at Cat Key. The rifle I brought was no problem, just paperwork. My Dad's dog, however... was a big problem. I had previously sent away for forms I heard about in the cruising guide... But according to the Customs official that was "the wrong form". So he kindly took care of it for a C-note if you get my drift. Oh well, it was worth it ;)

I saw a You Tube video where a CO2 paintball gun was suggested and using rounds of very strong pepper balls instead of paint balls. These guns can carry huge amounts of rounds and can stop anybody in their tracks from a distance!! Non lethal minimizing the huge consequences of killing somebody with a lethal gun and Spending the rest of your life in prison in a third world country and becoming somebody’s bitch. In any self defense training rule number one is to never put your self in a situation or place where you are likely to become a victim. Rule number two is if You are in an area where the likelihood of becoming a victim is imminent then get the hell out of dodge as fast as your legs can carry You. Rule number three is if You are trapped and there is no way out You must try to negotiate and be ready to give up your wallet and other valuables. If it becomes clear that your life is in danger You MUST NEVER give the attacker any clue that You have martial arts training or other forms of combat training or that you are carrying a gun. The element of surprise means everything and when the time comes and you have a plan you must strike fast and hard and accurate to totally demobilize your attacker. If You have a gun You MUST have trained and trained and trained how to draw very fast and use it decisively and accurately and be prepared to pull the trigger either to wound or to kill if Your life depends on it!! The gun is the absolute last choice and bear in mind even if You are defending Your self You can still be charged in many countries. So Rule number one becomes the most important rule of them all!

When asked , we always say no we don’t have fire arms. In reality we have 2 PS90’s with 50 round mags. And 2 two 9 mm hand guns. Always say no to other cruisers. Never know who will set you up to be robbed.

@@user-ik8pr4tm1m I don't live in living hell here in Finland. There is no gun violence, our police is well educated (3 year in uni), we have free education and healthcare for everyone. There is no super rich and no super poor, so allmost everybody are quite happy, no one die in hunger and there is just some 100-200 homeless people in whole country. There are crimes and criminals in Finland too but rate of crimes is quite low because most of people doing well and there is not so many desperate people than USA (we have NOT 1% of our citizen in prison like in USA). We have lot of guns here in Finland but if you want to buy gun officials check our mental health, you need to join hunting or shooting club etc. And almost every man need to service in army 6-12 months (I service as Military Police), so almost every man is familiar with guns and know how to handle guns. Guns are not fetish or object of love for Finnish, guns are just tools. So, it is not very likely that I become a victim here in Finland. Or Europe. I understand that in USA you need to be scared, there is lot of desperate people in USA.

Owning/possessing a firearm for self protection is a very different animal from general gun ownership. Mistakes are often permanent as are the consequences. From the little I know about guns onboard; it can be tricky. First, outside of territorial waters, boats are governed by their registered flag (e.g., US vessel in high seas, carrying gun is allowed). Each country has its own set of laws that apply. To avoid troubles, first check what are the applicable laws (sometimes guns are allowed but must be locked, sometimes guns are kept by the authorities from entry to departure, and sometimes guns are simply prohibited, sometimes authorization to carry gun can be requested prior to entry, etc..). Second, no matter what the rules are, always declare that you carry gun. Don't hide. Hiding guns will land you in jail in 99.99% of the cases + fines + vessel impounding. Finally, if you plan sailing in dangerous waters, check with international maritime organizations, and if you can afford, install an alert beacon onboard. As very well stated in the video, theft is the most frequent crime you may face. The best protection consists in making tools, engines, dinghy, and other accessories hard to take away.

Very helpful. I really appreciate how you organize and present the information. The language I prefer is from "gun" to "defensive firearm", which brings a clear context without all the political churn. On the story regarding two individuals approaching in a boat at night: they would have eventually drawn the gun to get what they wanted. As someone trained (and former LEO) I suggest couples discuss how they will handle such situations and then follow the plan. Fortunately having some individuals approach and meaning to do harm takes time and time gives you some options. A bit different than when suddenly held up at an ATM. I recommend Active Self Protection, a You Tube channel which is a great resource where you can learn from others mistakes and successes.

Having a gun onboard is always an interesting subject. This is ‘S.V. Salty Paws’, cruising the western Caribbean (presently in Rio Dulce, Guatemala because it is hurricane season & this is the best hurricane hole). We believe the key question with a gun on board and if you pull the gun are you mentally prepared to pull that trigger & kill someone’? This is a huge decision for the average person. If you have law-enforcement or military experience & have dealt with serious self defense & possibly death before, then this is one thing. But the average individual does not have this exposure. Never pull a gun as a scare tactic (as in the story you told in your video), you MUST be prepared to pull that trigger, because the group you are confronting may fear for their lives & move against you, in self defense too. Simply be smart & do not go into countries, or areas of countries where there are reports of yacht robberies & piracy. Stay well off-shore & by-pass areas. if using a gun is a huge decision for you, don't carry one. While you are trying to decide the bad guy will simply take it away from you and use it on you and those with you, or use their own weapon. There is also a high likelihood you will make a bad decision and shoot out of fear when you didn't need to.

It's now known as Alec Baldwin rule. Never point a gun at someone you would not kill. That gives the other person fear and will likely shoot to defend himself. It's just like a duel: the one who shoots first wins. No one is faster than a bullet.

I saw an interview with Keith from Sailing Zatara where he is asked that question. Without going into great detail, I am sure you can find it on youtube, he made some great points as to why they no longer carry a firearm. The one take away I got from it was that most piracy occurs within national waters, and every country they visited confiscated the firearm while the boat was in those waters. He said it was more of a hassle than it was worth because if they did get attacked the firearm was in some custom's office miles away. He also said that due to the myth of the "American Gun Culture" most people assumed they had a gun onboard just for the simple fact that they flew the Stars and Stripes.

Yes i saw that. As one person said. They pulled out a toy m16 and the problem went away. In 1975 my father and i were driving accross the nullabore and were stopped by about 50 local aboroginals intimadatin people for what they could get. This is the middle of no where. Anyway i pulled my pump action from beside the seat a in plain view and the waves parted. 2 hours and 150 miles later we reported to police and their comment was "thanks for that. They are up to that again.' And a police car with a few police took of down the road. You see often you just have to to think you might hurt the purpetrator and they go away. Sometimes easy meat is better than being potentially the dead meat. I have been shooting for more than 60 years. Its hard to tell a toy from the real thing and i will not rish my ass just in case its not a toy. Its another option to explore

The regulations for bringing a firearm into different countries is confusing and can change. I read, in “Caribbean Island Hopping”, by John Wright, that the 12-gauge flare pistol will disintegrate a ¾” inch sheet of plywood at 40 yards. That is further than you need for personal protection, in most situations. And flare pistols are often mandatory to have on board.

Be very careful with flare guns from what Ive read many countries consider trigger operated flare guns to be firearms. The boat is required to have flares not flare guns. They expect you to have the tube with the pull string kind of flares.

You can fire 12 Guage through a flare gun in an emergency. Its not very safe, but here in alaska its used as bear protection. Many laws likely also ban ammunition though.

Personally, I do carry a firearm on the boat, and plan to while cruising. Having fought in two wars, I just can't imagine not being able to protect myself and my family, and I have experience taking on...well, very aggressive insurgents/soldiers, and people in firefights. No problem there. But it's better to deal with a foreign court and be alive then tied to an anchor. Regardless, even if you lose the firefight you went down with your boots on...and made them earn the boarding with quite a few lives. Maybe it's the military in me, maybe it's because I was raised in Wyoming, who knows...but I would never allow myself to go down without a fight and taking some of the bastards with me. I can only speak for myself and my wife however, I understand that opinions and needs will be relative, so I also support everyone else's decision. As far as the countries that don't allow them? Well, there are ways to deal with that.

I do not know why your comments were at all controversial. I am an American Pro 2nd Amendment dude, and have and will carry a gun on my boat. However, anything you said was simply good advice. Most people, like the unfortunate lady that was shot, should not be carrying firearms. It takes training and then more training to be proficient with your weapon. You simply pointed out a mild opinion, and let us know about the ease, or difficulty of bringing a firearm into a different country. Thank You for Your Balanced approach.

Been on the water for half of my life and my mother was leadership of an international shipping company. We always carry firearms. Her ships and crew all carry firearms. The fact is, when you've got nobody to depend upon but yourself then you need the right tools for the job. There is no better tool for self defense than a firearm. I get that your experience island hopping the Caribbean is done in large packs of other sailors. In that environment, maybe it's not so critical. However, the world is far larger than the Caribbean, it can be very dangerous, and 911 isn't reachable,... and you may not be, either.

I'll add another anecdote. I personally know a woman who was solo sailing in the Gulf of Mexico who was boarded in the middle of the night while sleeping. She did not have a firearm. She was kidnapped and drug to a jungle encampment in Colombia by guerillas. She was drugged and raped for 7 months until she was rescued in 2006 by the Colombian military after her family bribed the government to search for her. She spent 6 months in drug rehab after being brought back to the US and she has never sailed again. She has tremendous PTSD and permanent psychiatric issues. She told me that she regrets not having a firearm. Take that for what it's worth. If you dig around you can find more info about her story. I have heard many many stories and I have even experienced piracy at sea.

Many of us are interested in knowing options to protect our families and property, and knowing that firearms are problematic to move between countries, I suggest reviewing other options. for example, crossbows, special bullets for flare guns, Tasers, even pepper spray. Also talk about sirens and light beams; where to install them and best practices in their use.

Spear guns. Nobody will think twice about you having a spear gun on a boat. Some of them are very powerful. They are not great on range but if someone is boarding your boat it is going to be short-range.

Ok I have guns on my boat i am a pro gun guy that said when I go crusing I won't. My understanding if you check in say in Havana you will need to check out in Havana. Puts a damper on plans. Patrick Childress sailing channel (RIP) Had 2 episodes on boat defence. The second one in comments there were great ideas. Fire extinguisher filled with hot pepper power for instance. I started looking into ideas. In Alaska they have 12v electric anti bear fences to protect a camp. Grounding would not be per instructions but I'm told it can be done on a boat. Gun is easy, you can use some inginuty and still be safe. Like a U.S. marine once told me "the only fair fight was the one you lost."

Good comment Scott. I'm with you on the pro gun side (2ndAmmendment) and I carry a CCW so in the USA I carry on the boat. My wife and I are planning a circumnavigation on retirement, and I won't be bringing my firearms. I also watched Patrick's videos on boat defense and there are some good ideas there. In one of his books (can't remember off hand which one) Fatty Goodlander outlines an alarm system he has used and recommendations for exterior boat lighting to discourage boarding. Then there is alway Joshua Slocum's "tacks on the deck."

Simple message to myself. Never sail to anywhere requiring a gun to be handy. I'm 62 and have never even seen a handgun up close except for in the holster of some law enforcement in some countries I've been to. I had a rifle as a kid on the farm for the rabbits, but otherwise despise guns in any form.

So I'm British ex military. A really interesting take on security, My view on guns, is that I would rather not have one. I am considering carrying a gun for our round the world trip though. Purely to stop boarders, so a hand gun would not really work for me. I would need a long barrel with night sight, at least a 7.62mm (US 0.308) I know through experience that with that tool I can secure my vessel for likely 600 m, definitely 300 m but buying the rifle would be difficult, confiscation? illegal gun trafficking laws? I'm now inclined to go the way of buy them a beer policy :) very British by the way!

Read all the comments one mentioned Patrick Childress channel and a discussion on guns. It is a good read. I am a gun owner and have been all my life. At this time I will say a gun should be your last thing for defense. The first thing to use is you brain. Having a gun can lead to all kinds of problems the average person does not need. First of all most people are not trained to use a gun for self defense and I am including law officers. Using a gun and shooting it is not the mental state of mind that is needed for self defense. If you are not ready to kill a moment notice and most people are not showing a gun will get you killed. You pointed out the lady who pointed a gun was killed. Sadly that would not uncommon if it was a bad guy. If it wasn't a bad guy why point the gun. There all kinds way for self defense that don't put you in danger.....That could be a whole different tread .

My five cents. 1. It depends on which country you visit. The Western Caribbean is much more prone to attacks by locals, because of the history of civil wars and prevalence of weapons of war. Also theft is very common. 2. It depends on who is attacking you and how they are armed. You do not want to confront 5 guys armed with AK 47 when it is just you and your wife with a 38. Try to negotiate calmly or give up what they want. If you happened to cross the path of drug dealers, there is no good advice I can give. 3. Never permit anyone to approach you at night or board without you permission at any time. If they board anyway,, get below and lock yourself in behind steel bars and get a gun ready. If you speak the language, try to find out what they want and hand it to them from a safe spot. If they insist on breaking and entering, they will have a strong reason to do so, maybe rape, maybe kill or harm you, or they may be high on drugs or booze. In that case, I would warn them I am armed and will prevent them from entering at all cost. Then the decision is on them to leave or put themselves in harm's way. If they do, you know that bad things are going to happen, so start firing warning shots and aimed shots through the companionway. 4. Some people in high risk areas have scared boats off from approaching by brandishing guns or firing warning shots. It shows you are armed and ready to defend yourself. You may hurt an innocent fisherman's feelings, but in high risk areas it is worth a consideration. 5. When entering a country, declare your guns and have them secured. You won't need them on land. If your dinghy or your wife's necklace is stolen , go to the police, don't start a firefight. 6. In the Estern Caribbean, there is less danger. People just want to steal, not to kill. Living in the Western Caribbean for twenty years has taught me the danger of NOT being armed, as well as of using guns. I have escaped being killed by sheer luck, by being careful where NOT to go and by the right decisions made. Here, ignorant and desperate people carry weapons of war, the murder rates ate staggering and the perpetrators are seldom found. Often they act as killers for the drug cartels, that smuggle 90% of the US drug consumption by air and sea through this area. Be careful, please!!

Firearms are a USA thing, I have crusied in the Caribbean, South America, Bahamas and the USA. Very few non USA citizens carry a gun, a lot of USA citizens dump their guns overboard once they leave the USA as they find it's a lot of hassle importing them into different countries and actually they have no need of them.

If you're going to pull a gun on someone you'd better be prepared to use it decisively. Otherwise, it will likely only serve to get you in trouble. Thus, as happened with that lady, a gun should not be used as part of a negotiation, and if you do have one, only use it in the last extremity (i.e., negotiations broken down, opposite guy clearly making to harm you).

The best compromise I've seen is paintball guns that have pepper balls loaded. Paintball guns are considered non-guns in most all countries. That and pepper spray is about the only active defense against unarmed, no gun, intruders. Lights are another defense... make sure you have lights that will turn your boat into daylight if someone tries to get on board.

paintball with pepper balls is good ,, and there are handheld lights (torches) and large swivel lights (torches) that are so bright they literally blind you and make you see stars for a good 5 seconds ,,, hit them with a torch light first and then unload on them with the pepper balls ... i would still hide a revolver or 2 as last resort though
