I believe Its called fleet yaw. The bullet can tumble or yaw earlier or later depending on the angle of the nose of the bullet when it impacts. It will still tumble and yaw, just at different depths depending. M855 is more suseptible, not as much for m193. Depending on that angle m855 can tumble anywhere from 1"-8". Also i believe the projectiles will still tumble even at lower velocities, because of the shape of all spire point projectiles....but the minimum velocity needed to fragment is around 2,400 feet per sec. And as weve seen in this video fragmentation even at full velocity is not guranteed. It has alot to do with bullet construction from each individual manufacturer. I know hornady and winchester 55gr fmj do fragment, whereas MEN german m193 and any russian bi metal projectiles will not because they use a thicker jacket. A full 20" barrel will make the likelyhood of fraging higher. I personally keep 10 mags of m855 and 10 mags of my 55gr hornady soft point handloads loaded up just incase the Chinese invade lmao. I would love to see how a basic soft point performs. I use my sp handloads on deer and they do the trick so i figure they are good enough for SD/HD. I pay the same price for hornady SP projectiles that i would for FMJ. So i loaded a ton for self defense. I pay $11 for 100 SP projectiles. Better more expensive projectiles like those 77gr bthp sierra are like $25 for 50. But they are worth it. Maybe someday ill load those up. Thanks for the video! I can geek out over 556 all day!

I'm glad you understand they're yawing- I'm already getting comments telling me I don't know what I'm talking about, that they're not yawing lol. I forgot how much controversey and opinions there is surrounding 5.56 stuff. I did notice that one top shot did not tumble until a much later depth than the others, but I figured that was due to shot placement affecting that. A tumble at 8" doesn't do us much good... I have a soft point on hand I'll test this spring when I start up again and I'm getting more before then as well along with some hollow points. Stay tuned 🫡

If you pull one of those 55gr pills out of the case, you'll notice they are concave exposed lead on the base. Pointy bullets are obviously heavier towards the rear, so when they hit a target, they want to invert and travel base first, as that's where the most mass is. So the 55gr bullets do not tumble as much as they invert and travel backwards, pushing that hollow, soft lead base into the target, causing hollow point like expansion and fragmentation.
@BuckeyeBallistics10 күн бұрын
Hollow points that do not expand and do not tumble or yaw cause no more damage than fmj doing the same (I have several examples on this channel)- maybe as much as a straight flying flat nose if the hollow cavity is wide enough, which is only slightly more damage than a straight flying fmj. The 'inverting" is literally a tumble- it doesn't have to tumble multiple times to be a tumble. Whenever the bullet yaws sideways or flips backwards/inverts, it does the same damage as a hollow point (or better) during this yaw or flip. It's the difference between an olympic diver jumping into a pool head first with arms leading in a point, and him doing a backsmacker into the pool from the same height. There is much more surface area and drag while the bullet is sideways, thus the massive tearing. In this instance, we also have fragmentation from the 55gr that would be causing a lot of that damage as well, acting like a varmint round to a certain extent quickly dumping it's energy and causing massive tearing and cavitation.

Though I'll admit to disagreeing on the "yawing in flight" idea (it's a highly popular idea, so no shade, just saying... but high-speed footage has debunked some time ago), as these same rounds punch perfect holes out to whatever range (yawing will show otherwise), this video is highly informative, more than most, actually. In fact, the attention to detail in this video is impressive. Side by side comparison if M855 and M193 is always golden, showing how both are highly erratic in a flesh simulation, exactly as intended. I believe in 'Nam (my father served two tours and had interesting stories) they referred to this as the "meat clever effect" that so impressed the communists that they quickly adopted the 5.45x39 with similar ballistics. Thanks for this side-by-side, apples-to-apples comparison! This is the content we want to see. Great work, thanks!
@BuckeyeBallistics10 күн бұрын
Well thanks for watching and I'm glad you like the video. If you are talking about the bullet flight through the gel, you can go watch Brass Fetchers slow motion M855 video and it did exactly this- tumbled. He has a second version of the video where it is slowed down even more to 100% confirm the bullet tumbled, and you can see the cavity perfectly replicates mine here. Curious how one would otherwise explain the sharp downward trajectory straight though my table and into the ground... The exact same thing happened to him as well, and the bullet clearly yawed in his video. If you are instead speaking on the possible wobbling through the air I mentioned, I put text over the video asking if it was complete bs, meaning it wasn't necessarily an opinion I endorse 100%...
@snowdogthewolf10 күн бұрын
@@BuckeyeBallistics Yes, the instability in flight is what I'm referring to. I've even heard folks claim these rounds are intended to "tumble in flight" to inflict the most damage. Anyone with even the most basic understanding of ballistics, bullets simply don't work that way unless there's been a defect. If it tumbles in flight, we can kiss accuracy and range goodbye. But once these "flight-stable" projectiles hit a medium such as ballistic gell (or flesh/muscle/whatnot), they tumble and sometimes to the point of fragmentation as _actually_ intended. Again, an awesome and accurate test.
@MilesLong556x699 күн бұрын

5.56-.223 is always a mixed bag. The 62 Grain Green Tip defeats light barriers better than 55 grain FMJ and that's what it was created to do. However notes from the field indicate meat and bone without armor show less trauma than regular 55 gr FMJ. On the other hand soft point bullets of 64 gr and more offer somewhat decent performance within 100 yards on small deer. Then there's the 70 gr + loads that can offer even better depth of penetration than the lighter soft points yet offer less velocity. Maybe we can see a variety of these loads at 50 & 100 yards tested
@Mark-uh4zd10 күн бұрын
Hmm, doesn’t special ops teams use 12” or 10.5” with the 77 grain round? I think it’s the mk262 or something. Wouldn’t that get piss poor velocity seeing as it’s heavy and out of a short barrel, unless the cartridges are loaded with a different type of propellant than what we get commercially. But when i was using green tip fmj if i didnt headshot the groundhog it was going back in the hole if i couldnt get a follow up shot. So i started using strictly BTHP match grade hornady and havent had a single pest aurvive even a body shot. That bthp 556 tumbles as soon as it hits the skin almost like a ak74 . Now i just use green tips for target practice and boy i had abunch by time i realized it. I have gotten like 5 different bthp 556 rounds and they all seem to react the same way.

@BuckeyeBallistics mine also like the frontiers and hornady both truly i dont think ive shot a bad group with any bthp rounds. I use them in the 24 inch 18s 16s 13.5 and 7.5 inch barrels never had a one dislike a bthp round. That 24inch got a tighter headspace in the upper so ive actually had some soft tips at one point but the gun wouldnt chamber them out the magazine and if i did get it to chamber if i didnt pullthe trigger and instead unload it it was pulling the bullet apart leaving the tip in the barrel while ejecting the casing and gun powder. Never occured with an fmj or bthp round but i got some ammo from allegiance ammunition on youtube and theh got some badass ammo but thats what was doing it. The type i got looked like a soft pointas in it wasnt a steep angled bullet it was more rounded but when that bullet htis its target it turns into what looks like burning sand and it explodes in every direction inside the wound cavity. Was like a home defense round i think so itwouldnt go through a 2nd sheet of drywall or something. It works fine out of any other of my uppers besides that bushmaster i think it just has tighter tolerances. Which it should considering what i paid for that thing. But out of any of my other 556 rifles it works great just doesnt work out the 24inch bull barreled ar. Should look at their website on youtube they prob got some real cool stuff now that was 10 years ago when i bought from them and they had just been starting the channel. But ive never had to use a 2md shot on a coyote or groundhog with those bthp rounds frontier hornady got some double tap and a coupel others vmax i think has a bthp as well.

Ok. Legitimate and serious question. Why do people expect fragmentation from a FMJ bullet ? FMJ is not designed to fragment.
@BuckeyeBallistics7 күн бұрын
Generally no, fmj is not designed to expand. But in the case of 5.56 (and some other cartridges), some of the fmj bullets fragment due to the combination of high velocity and low mass. This effect of course deteriorates and vanishes the further out the bullet impacts, as it is losing velocity constantly as it travels through the air...
@concernedpatriot.22217 күн бұрын
@ of course, anything might happen with a small bullet traveling that fact but I’m always intrigued watching people looking for fragmentation when it’s not designed to occur. Besides, a 1 millimeter piece of jacket fragmenting is going to cause barely any tissue damage.

You got bad ammo. I was on a 25m Group/Zero range with my trainees using M-16A2’s and we got lots of keyholes one day from that particular DODAC lot of M855’s. Rare, but happens.

You are just brilliant at this aren’t ya? The rounds are not tumbling thru the block they are expanding. They may tumble by the end of the block or just turn but not as soon as they enter. You need a rest so you hit the block square, cause you can’t while you’re just free ballin Are you still back in Vietnam thinking it’s a tumbling round on purpose?

You could debunk yourself just by going and watching Brass Fetchers slow motion M855 video- they are yawing sideways which is why is shot out the bottom of my (and his) table genius...

Well known fact that 5.56 tumble in gel and soft tissue.

Sad when $9 -$10/box is viewed as cheap. Damn Biden.

I have some old ammo where the price is 4.99 for 55g 556. Sad what has happened. During the outbreak, I was seeing 55g and 62g north of $1/round.

Yeah I was getting these for 6.50 5 years ago

@ I hope we have at least two years of no attacks on our 2A at the federal level. I distinctly remember after sandy hook and pandemic shelves being bare and price gouging thru the roof. Heck even in 2014-2016 ammo was still hard to come by for popular calibers, at least at the LGS.

Zzzzzzzz. Boring and slow and drug out, 14 minute video, 2 rounds shot, no real excitement, monotone voice, all for a video which has been done by others with slow motion cameras and more knowledge.

@@AKFF320Watching free content and then not only complaining about its content but also insulting the host is in truly poor taste. These videos are well explained. Unlike a lot of other content creators, if there is a question as to what happened or could happen that could not at that time be explained, this channel gives a shout out to the viewers for an answer rather than just making crap up. Not everyone has seen content with organic gel. Most similar videos show clear gel which does not represent as accurately what happens to organic media as the organic gel shown here. By the way organic gel is the true standard used by law enforcement. That being said there's info available on this channel that is not available on most of the others.

The general consensus is the M855 62gr green tip is inferior to the M193 55gr in terminal ballistics so don't use it for self defense. Uhhhhh, if I were a criminal I wouldn't want to get lit up with ANY 223/556 rd in the brisket.
