When you realize that the dialogue is so well written that what we now view as a one or two hour episode was encapsulated in a 15 minute radio program you realize how much smarter the writers were then. They gave the listener credit for being intelligent enough to read the voice inflections and the embellishment and hyperbole. A much better exercise of intellect than watching the same thing on TV.

I contend that by, say, 1940, the 30-minute radio play was a Perfect Art Form. The combination of sharp writing, voice acting, sound effects and music was a sublime experience, and shows like "Gunsmoke" "Night Beat, "Dragnet, "Suspense," "The Whistler" and "Richard Diamond" are as good as it gets.

Same theme music and same sort of introductory narration. On TV it was "Starring James Arness as Matt Dillon." Here it's "Starring William Conrad as Matt Dillon."
