Just saw them a few days ago, literally one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen A LOT. They sounded incredible, super tight, no rust. Honestly if they had recorded what they played it would have been better than whats on the album, which is saying a lot because their albums are great. Absolutely insane, so glad they got back together.

My younger brother was in HS when Super Bon Bon came out and one of his friends had a theory about what the song was about. I'm not saying that this IS what it was about, but the friend said he thought it was about the men's room in one of the NY museums, because the men's room at the time was a pay toilet on the mezzanine level

I was actually listening to my favorite Soul Coughing songs last night on my drive home. My favorite is Lazybones. That song has got such a unique, chill vibe to it. The constant guitar notes that start out the song, and stay constant throughout the entire tune. The syncopated drum beats, the low and hypnotic bass line. And then Doughtry's lyrics flowing through, with his signature "uuuhh" sound at the end of nearly every sentence. It's just such a fantastic track. It always reminds me of how I felt as a teenager, on a hot summer evening, right as dusk is fading into night. With nothing to do but watch the sky shift to darkness and stars. The sounds of animals and traffic flowing through my open window as a backing track to the season. That song truly transports me.

I would see these guys performing all the time in 1994-95 when I was in graduate school where I was getting an MFA. I lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn and Soul Coughing was playing in all of our studios while we worked. We would leave our studios in Chelsea and head down to the Lower East side and would see them and other great bands at the Knitting Factory or Max Fish or some tiny loft “club” that just sprang up the week before and would probably be closed by the end of the month. They were a gem something only we knew and we hoped to keep it that way. You say they only sold 70,000 albums and I think they all went to me and my friends. Seriously was a great band and a small group of devoted fans that circled around them. Skateboarders , of which I was one, loved them . Was bummed that they broke up but I’m glad to see Mike is doing better I had heard he was in a bad place for a while. Thanks for the video.

I saw them for the first time in Cleveland in the Fall of 96 at the Odeon - stood right up front next to the stage, and they brought the place down that night. One of the best shows I've ever seen. It was pure manic insanity. I then saw them three or four more times after that before they broke up, but nothing was like that first time. I only knew one song and just decided to check them out on a whim - Failure opened that night too - and I became a fan for life after that. When El Oso came out, they played the bigger Agora theater - and that show was insane too. Great live band. I really wish they would've lasted longer.

I was used to one of the Johns having to come out before the opening act and remind the audience to treat the opener with respect because despite what the audience may think, they were chosen to be the opening act because both John and John enjoyed their music. (Soul Coughing and OK Go) are honestly, those are the only two opening acts I've seen with TMBG that I even remember despite having seen them dozens of times. As far as I know they're still together. They put out a new album I think just last year or the year before.

I picked up one of Doughty's solo records called Sad Man/Happy Man. It's exceptional.

it's nice. But no match compared to Soulcoughing. Sorry, he's just a part of the whole magic.

Mike wrote all the songs in soul coughing and he formed the band so….there you go

And for the top comment, yes! Mike is amazing! Without mikes energy on stage and in the studio and lyrics, the other band mates would not have gone far

I saw the clip for "Down to this" once... ONCE... in the mid nineties... 94, or 95... and that was it. I didn't know the name of the song... i didn't know who the band was... nothing. But that song periodically bounced around my brain for TWENTY YEARS! It would just come back to me for no reason... and i'd be singing this random song... completely incorrectly, i might add... and even though i had tried to find out who they were, no one knew what the heck i was on about 🤷♂ until it hit me one night, like a truck, i should just type the words into google and see where that goes 😂😂 Most rewarding 30 second google search ever 👍👍👍👍

I'm glad I got to see them. I'm thinking it was the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Just a really cool, fun vibe!

I love the song Circles. It brings me right back to being 8 or 9 in the late 90s stealing CDs and cassettes from my older brother.
