Silverchair's experience with popularity is quite different in Australia compared to the rest of the world. Yes their first album was massive everywhere, but all of their albums were massive in Australia. They did become more divisive towards fans the older they got, but by the time their last album came out, the lead single 'Straight Lines' was the biggest song in Australia of that year. It had huge commercial airplay.

looking back it's odd how many Australian bands I saw in concerts growing up, Ammonia opening for Silverchair was the first concert I ever went to, and I also saw superjesus open for Local H. pretty sure there were more too but those are the only ones I can recall off the top of my head. but considering I grew up in a college town notorious for having it's own local scene (Athens GA) it's just kind of funny there were that many imports at that time too, I guess everybody was still looking to find or be the next Nirvana

I love Silverchair. I was 15 when Frogstomp came out and when I found out they were also 15, it blew my mind to think that dudes my age were making music that good. They were my first rock concert (which took some convincing with my mom to let me go) and they were amazing live. As they got older, their sound changed of course and I wasn't initially a huge fan of Diorama, but now I realize it's a masterpiece. I was bummed when they broke up, but I'm hoping they might reunite because I'd definitely love to see them live again. God, I miss the 90s. Great time for music.

I saw them at the Santa Monica pier in 90’s. Someone threw something at John’s and gave him a bloody nose. The band stopped and he left the stage and then came right back covered in blood and said something like “fuck it..” and rocked even harder. I was 10 feet away from this and it’s still one of the greatest rock n roll moments I’ve ever witnessed.

Not many people can write a album like Frogstomp when you’re 14 years old and then write freak show at 17 years old both while still at high school. Neon ballroom a dark album but some great songs and wrote that while suffering with anorexia. Diorama is an absolute masterpiece of a album too

I saw them in 1995 in Boston. They were literally at their peak in the US with Frogstomp. They opened up for the Chili Peppers and goddamn did they sound great. Unbelievable considering they were 16, 17 at the time??? Never seen a group that young put out such a classic album, debut or not. Each song had radio potential and could’ve all been a single back in those days. No band of teenagers i can think of rocked that hard and still sounded so clean live. Not even close. They opened with Madman and eventually plowed through every song that was on Frogstomp. I’m almost positive they closed with Israel’s Son.

Frogstomp was one of the best albums ever. I was in 8th grade when that came out. Still remember where I got the CD wanting it cause I liked the cover and was a fan instantly. Still listen to it the whole album to this day brings back all the memories of the 90s

Around Christmas time (the year Young Modern came out) they were touring and played a venue here in Mobile where I live. I couldn’t go to the concert because I had to go to a company Christmas party for my wife’s company. About halfway through the party one of the stylists (she was a cosmetologist) came up and said “there’s a group of guys asking if they can come in. They think we’re having a wedding reception haha. They have accents” when I looked over they were leaving and I chased them down lol. I begged them to stay but they were headed up to the club at the top floor of the hotel we were at. Thankfully their drummer was in love with one of the hair stylists, a 6’4 ebony version of Marilyn Monroe, and we got to hang out with them all night. Of course the younger people I was with had no clue who they were but I was in heaven. I took pics with their drummer and we talked in detail about sobriety (I was attempting it for the first time) and how much it sucked. Their manager got so drunk we had to carry him to the elevator on a luggage rack. They were laughing their heads off. Super nice guys. I’ve never gotten to hang out with a famous band before or since.

Diorama is a masterpiece of an album and it is Silverchair at their peak. Especially Daniel Johns and his vocal performance on said album. There was absolutely no pitch correction on his vocal takes, which, is an incredibly common tool utilized the studio by many artist. In addition to that the range that he has, is just outstanding.

Around the year 2000 i was going for weekly drum lessons with one of Australias best known Jazz drummers, i remember getting to the lesson early one time and being able to hear the student inside playing, great chops' i thought. The door opens and a student my age comes out, he said, "hi and something else friendly like, and i was confused. I went inside and asked the teacher Nick, "hey who was that guy, looks familiar? Nick, all cool as hell, just says," ahh he plays for some band, Silver something...!... " Damn it, that was Ben Gillies". .big Respect, the guy is already on top but still attending weekly drum lessons. Thats dedication to ones craft..i regularly turned up early for lessons after that to listen and learn.

It's actually an urban myth that their name came from combining Berlin Chair and Sliver. They made that story up during a Triple J interview to entertain Richard Kingsmill. Daniel Johns and I are born two months apart and I first saw Silverchair when [we were all] 13 years old at Lenny's in Adelaide in early 1994, a tiny, grotty venue which doesn't exist anymore. They'd only just released the Tomorrow EP and it was one of their first gigs outside Newcastle (probably one of their first gigs full stop). There was a small mosh pit with guys almost falling onto the very low stage, and I remember Daniel looking quite nervous about it because he was practically getting kicked. Ten years later I randomly walked into a very expensive hotel in Sydney one afternoon and held open the door for a couple coming out - it was Daniel Johns and Natalie Imbruglia!

Freak Show is such an underrated rock album from the 90's. I'm a huge silverchair fan and Neon Ballroom is my fav, but Freak Show is what I recommend to people looking for a rock album they never heard.

That song would be right at home in a John Wick style fight scene. ...I really liked Diorama and even imported it from Australia. But, it was more of a divergence than evolution of their sound. I read that Daniel destroyed the original tracks (which were similar to Neon's harder songs) in favor of starting fresh for Diorama. The Lever, One Way Mule, and b-side Hollywood were likely remnants of the destroyed tracks.

Diorama was just years ahead of where most of their fans were at the time, unfortunately. I include myself in that category. I was a huge fan of Silverchair, primarily during their first 2 records. I saw them live during that period about half a dozen times. I kind of fell off with them by the time they released their 3rd record (the one with "Ana's Song") so I never even listened to Diorama when it came out. Now, yeeeears later, I've rediscovered that record and concerts from that time and I'm completely blown away. It's fantastic, an absolute classic that I think will long outlive them and one day be seen as not only *their* best record but as one of the best records of the first decade of the millennium. I think it will have a large second life and already see signs and evidence that it's happening already. They were also an absolutely fantastic luve band throughout their time as a band. I sincerely pray Diorama and the record after, "Young Modern," will be rediscovered and that they'll reform for a couple years of touring, I'd love to see them live again.

Diorama is their best album they recorded. I have all their albums and love each one differently, but at the time it was pretty evident it was special and something magical was happening. It holds up well. I do think all their art holds up and doesn’t sound dated. They constantly evolved. Watch the documentary of them making Diorama. I bought that as well when it came out along with the album.

Despite their commercial success (possibly because of it) they really weren't taken seriously by a lot of people because of their age. I saw them at a festival early on and the heckling from the back of the crowd was awful. People shouting stuff like "GO TO BED DANIEL!" and "IT'S PAST YOUR BEDTIME!". Just cruel stuff - really rotten to do to kids :-(

Nice to see The Screaming Jets mentioned in a youtube retrospective. They were Newcastle boys too, also started young and quickly developed a reputation as a great up-and-coming band, and also won a Triple J-backed national band competition in 1989, as well as playing support slots for some major local acts. If memory serves me right, their frontman Dave Gleeson was a bit of a force in big-upping Silverchair around the local music scene early in their career. This was a cool look back at a time with some fond memories attached, thanks for the video! Hard to pick a favourite Silverchair tune but whenever I hear the one that started it all, that shit is definitely getting turned up LOUD. :)

The story I heard was that were listening to Triple J's Request Fest on the radio & one of them wanted to request You Am I's "Berlin Chair" & someone else wanted Nirvana's "Sliver". Referring to their "fall" is a bit rich. They just broke up. Silverchair hit their stride with Diorama, which I understand was largely ignored outside Australia. This makes sense. Most 15-19 year-olds don't release their art for the whole world to hear. They get all their mistakes out and figure themselves out well away from the public gaze. They chose to not take this option. Daniel Johns has gone on to make some very interesting stuff which, I assume, the idiots who dump them in the "grunge casualty" category don't take the time to listen to. FYI - the story about the band name being derived from a portmentau of Nirvana's "Sliver" and You Am I's "Berlin Chair" is untrue. Daniel Johns has stated it is actually taken directly from the title of the C.S Lewis novel "The Silver Chair." He created the alternative story for fear of negative and short-sighted reactions to a teenage boy acknowledging an interest in literature (God forbid).

They broke us nationally in 1990. (short-lived). There were a lot of great, now classic Australian rock bands that came out of JJJ’s unearthed program. Double J now is a pretty good reflection of how JJJ was in the 90’s. Listenable at least.

Just a bit of context to clarify for non-Aussies: JJJ is not the “local radio station” it’s the national public station for youth - there’s no bigger radio station in Australia for alternative music. So submitting a tape to that comp was a big deal and would get national exposure if it all went well. Which it did :) Loved this band, gonna have to binge all their albums after watching this. This whole thing is based on a false optics. When Silverchair stopped performing together, they were playing arenas throughout Australia, all their albums were high charters and singles were all over pretty much every rock radio station. It’s the typically myopic US-centric “if it doesn’t happen in the US, it never really happened”. The band just came to a natural end. They had been together over a decade and experienced massive success from the time they were in their mid-teen and their tastes and worlds diverged as they got older. There was no blow-ups. No real tension. Ben and Chris are doing their own thing. Chris is very successful in multiple businesses. Ben has financial freedom because he was a co-writer on most of the singles off Frogstomp. I’ve spoken to both of them socially many times after the band dissolved and have no ill-will to Dan. They understand he moved past wanting to make music with a band and wanted the freedom to do whatever he wanted. So there’s no fall, just friends that drifted apart. Not sure if they’ll ever do another tour/record. I don’t think they will but I wouldn’t be surprised if they suddenly came out of no where, dropped an album and did a massive run of shows.

As someone that followed Silverchair for their entire career, I can wholeheartedly say that I pray for a reunion. They will always be one of my all time favorite bands. I followed every US tour, and I did hang out with them. They are awesome guys. They treat their crew like family. Gracious to the fans. You got part of the time line wrong,and there was alot more going on behind the scenes. I can tell you, that they got away with a bit more shenanigans, when the dad's were the chaperones. *wink* But they always kept it together. I follow the solo projects, but..... I’ve seen Silverchair too many times to count. One of the most memorable was the combined Silverchair and Everclear concert at Festival Hall in Melbourne on my 18th birthday. Was around the time when Freakshow was released and I think it was a week later grabbed tickets for their Channel V concert recording at The Palace in St Kilda. 'Tomorrow' was the most played song on American radio in '95, I believe. Shit was tight. Like super tight. People called it copy-paste grunge, but it honestly made all other grunge look really unprofessional. They were kids and they recorded their first tape of 'Tomorrow' literally at 13. Then for a music video at 14. Then for MTV's American video at 15. It was honestly insane the talent behind that band.

Silverchair sucks. Sure they were young but check out Daisy Chainsaw they were hella young too and wrote much better, more profound songs on their first album

I actually wore out my diorama cd, had to get another one, basically at this point if I see any of their cds thrifting or anything I grab them because they are one of my fave bands. My car doesn't have an aux port, so my car is loaded with cd cases lol

I saw Silverchairs first US concert. After their first song or two, lead singer asked “I’ve always wanted to see a packed arena in America hood up their lighters. Can y’all do that for us?” The entire stadium lit their lighters and he just stood there, eyes wide and almost crying. Then absolutely rocked out with “Tomorrow” and the crowds became like the lighters, straight rocking out and singing. Was awesome. Sadly it was one of Blind Melons last performances and soon after Stone Temple Pilots last few tours together A lot of e,options just thinking about it but glad I was there and rem it like it was yesterday (although I think that was the festival where a thrown beer bottle split my forehead whilst Better Than Ezra played of all things lol, wish I could rem that part. Not sure if the timeline matches and that was a different festival)

I saw Silverchair in Newcastle on their first tour, supporting Pantera. There was another new Australian band on the bill called Powderfinger, and they became massive in Australia as well. In fact, years later the two bands did a co-headlining arena tour.

Man there still huge here in australia they made a massive impact. Mind you there first albums where just lifted black sabbath riffs but they still did a good job. Saw them several times live they always put on a good show.

I was in my 20's when Silverchair first hit the scene. I did like the song, "Tomorrow", and the only reason I knew it was because my local alt-rock station played it to death. I really never delved into the band any deeper. Fast-forward 25 years and I listened to the album Diorama in full and was absolutely blown away. Since then, I've purchased the band's entire discography and absolutely love them.

Wait... so a magazine got a PICTURE of Johns simply PLAYING a guitar and that suddenly led them to think “This is proof of a possible Silverchair reunion!!” and not even consider that he would play his guitar without Silverchair being involved???
