Thanks. I have only done three stocks in the last year. I can keep the lines pretty straight now. I still tape the perimeter so no worries about nicks on boundry. i can slam cutter into the tape without worry. I still cut the boundry last by following the tape edge as a guide..

I me Walt the owner of Dem-Bartco.com factory (DemBart) he makes them up in Washington State.. Is an avid fisherman and hunter and even explains how he makes the tools all hardened with top grade tool steel. I just ordered the 16 Line her inch Master set.. His prices been the same since 2014 and the dealers really mark up over his. Hs site displays artists who use his checkering method and tools on furniture. He has a guide tool ...The long lines I see a guy using a skinner knife blade with big belly and rolling it like mincing onions.. You did great, looking neat that stock..Cannot wait to try the tools, been roughing it for years..lol..

I forgot to mention. For the curved boundrys i cut or tear the tape to 3/16 to 1/4 wide strips straight edge on one side. It will bend enough to follow curves for pistol grip checkering patterns.

You need a 60* following cutter. Thatll help keep the lines straighter, and has a row with 1 smooth tooth, and 1 row with rough teeth to cut into the wood parralel the way you want

I found the key to keeping lines straight is starting with 60 degree cutters. Using 90 degree cutters to point up only. The 90's just don't keep a straight line for whatever reason.

I consider myself still a beginner. the last gun I did was a .22 AR7 aka "Tommygun" because it kinda looks like one. I held the wood in my left hand resting part of it on a bath towel draped table and rotated the wood to suit. I managed 4 patterns and kept the lines straight all the way through. I did not have to straighten any lines. I was suprised that I was able to do that. I think my hand eye coordination has improved greatly. my grandfather was a gunsmith and he checkered at the kitchen table and hand held the stock. when I started I had an elaborate jig to mount the stock in, I doubt I will use it again.

@@robertwalker968 Same here, a cradle is worthless. Besides starting with 60 degree cutters the other thing I think would help a beginner to be successful is to not ignore the three line cutters.

I had not been using the three line cutter but started using it on recent project. I lightly cut a single line. Then lightly cut second line with follow cutter. Then third line with triple. I repeat over and over. Seems to keep lines straighter and eveny spaced without as much effort.
