The seven tackle 20m tap has to go. There's more incentive now to hand over the ball inside the opposition's 10m than there is to put the ball in goal and try for a repeat set.

Maybe if the kick is from your own half the opposition get a 7 tackle set, but if it's a kick from opposition half meaning it's more of an attacking kick you shouldn't get penalized for attempting a repeat set or attempting a try from a kick

The NRL should be taking heed on each of Gus's points on player development, protections for clubs and structuring player movement more thoroughly (understanding that a salary-capped league usually operates with a rookie draft in combination with free agency, or players being traded whilst still under contract (using the asset of draft picks as compensation, rather than just discount developed player value against a club's cap for e.g.). Quite startling that he makes the point of not many really understanding the detail and implication of the topic (be it state League, nor the NRL), as well as the new CBA having been finalised with the current status quo also, that Gus is realistic in saying would take a very long time to change.

I'm with Gus on the Development system and in my most humble opinion...Salary Cap DISCOUNTS should apply to the club from which the player has acquired he's development from and based on total years of development from that same club. from a minimum of 3yrs - for example 3-5yrs, 150K -6-7yrs, 300K, 8-10yrs, 500K. We have to take into consideration the time and $ invested into that player in the time he spent at that club. The club signing the player is not penalised and should they, so thats fine but lets introduce the Salary Cap Discount for the club who have made the effort.

I thoroughly agree with Gus Gould the new rules and consistently changing rules is forcing me to turn off, I guess that’s why I now follow the NFL with the passion I once had for the NRL even my kids haven’t been to a game this year because they can’t keep up and understand the rule changes 😢

Clubs that develop juniors should be rewarded ,you get clubs with no juniors eating up the spoils AKA Roosters and Manly in western Sydney

Thats something that has always annoyed in regards to the tigers; now taking into account poor team/player managent by the club with players not being utilised well and what not - the team has never had an issue finding young talent, and when these players have more experience in 1st grade and they start to come into their stride, they bugger off to another club and excel there. We had teddy, moses, ado carr and grant on the same team but couldnt make finals. Each of those players left and became stars at their new club.

Lol, mate you're dribbling. This isnt the 70s anymore. By Juniors they mean: Harold Matt's (U17) SG Ball (U19) Jersey Flegg (U21) NSW Cup / Q Cup We're not talk the U7s Park football. The Roosters are actually one of the big development clubs, tipping money, time, effort, skills into Juniors and debuting. Cause unlike other other clubs who have massive nursery's and do sweet FA (cough Broncos) cause they're the only team in town

I'm old and I miss the home and away competition, the current draw drives me mad. I reckon the comp should be split into northern and southern conferences, 10 teams in each, byes until we get to 20 teams, with a home and away comp in each conference and the top four in each conference going into the finals.

The 7 tackle set for kicking the ball dead is a sledgehammer to drive a nail. Do what rugby does, if you kick it dead, the other team get the ball from where it was kicked - if that's within the 20, all good - if they do it from downtown, the kickers need to get better.

modern rules give waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much control to people who are not players. We need rulings, not management from refs. I want grit, merit and excellence to decide games, not 'managing the flow of the game' by officials.

I agree with what is saying with keeping your developed players. The only thing that comes to mind if the clubs get that discount on resigning that talent. It will probably just shift to attacking the family of the junior stars in shifty ways to get them to sign with there club first. That good be good for both parties I’m not sure though.

Never heard Gus talk about junior development for his entire time at the Roosters. The moment anyone dared suggest the Roosters were over the salary cap, Gus used his weekly newspaper column to bring up restraint of trade.. Don't mistake Gus for caring for the game. Between Gyngell, Schubert and Politis the Roosters ran the game via the ARL board, salary cap office and major TV rights sponsor (ch9) for a good part of a decade. Junior development was never on the agenda.

developing players - local talent, or players signed to a club at say, under-21 level - should be rewarded. I absolutely believe that salary cap exemptions should apply, in this instance.

Simple solution: max 2 simultaneous tacklers except when defending the line. Rewards skilled attackers, exposes poor defenders, eliminates the need for myriad fiddling with rules (re stripping the ball, wrestling, collisions after kick offs and drop outs, etc, etc).

Gus is correct 7 tackles sets need to be ball kicked from outside 40m line ONLY! No more from missed field goals, knock ons... Passing after held is now a play the ball not a penalty so apply that rule to being tackled over the sideline after held call and stripping ball after held call!
