You know, i absolutely love guthrie...seriously i cant stop listening to him those times, because i havent truly listening him especially tres caballeros and erotic cakes...but there s something really important to know, you cant compare them, they re all great artists...they all have their legacy and styles, in pure technicity too, satriani s legato and mastery of mechanic vibrato, petrucci with his shredding speed skills which are astounding and wonderful, guthrie who is amazingly fast and sounds just like a piece of divine music (just like uncle skunk)...in fact you just CANT say which one is better...they re all far away from it and you know what : i love them all, i have my preference for satriani because he touch me right in the feels like nobody else but i will never say he s the better (or i am drunk, high or younger ^^)...i have listened many many many guitarists today, the notion of comparison is useful only when it s to broaden his musical horizon, the goal of music is to share and open minds...it s not here to make a dick contest :) or you ll never understand what music is, even Michael angelo batio know this (i like him too)

guthrie is special because, unlike most other players associated with "good electric guitar playing", he is able to give and take with all of his techniques, in a way that his notes happen because he means for them to, not because pentatonic scales sound "good" and fit under the fingers all the while corresponding with the fret markers... that and he is exceptionally musical, as opposed to egocentric. the world needs more players/musicians like guthrie.

I find the critics of truly exceptional players like Guthrie generally do not have an understanding of the theory or notation and techniques involved so it becomes boring as they are just watching fingers move. Players who are at a level to appreciate what he is doing usually cannot help but be impressed. One of the world's best, I believe.

You would get the technique down eventually, playing 12 hours a day. Wouldn't require full lifetime. I doubt Guthrie is physically any outlier, just a dude with 10 fingers. He doesn't have freak of nature big pinky or anything like that, like Paul Gilbert. Knowing what notes to play is another thing, improvisation like this requires extreme musical talent. Understanding chords, what scale fits which chord, his brain is like musical super computer. That you can't learn

Everything that Guthrie does is just amazing. He is like a modern Polymath, of the guitar and music. A polymath is well studied in many fields, Divinci is one. There is enough to know about the guitar alone if you look at all the diverse worldly players, and i believe Guthrie knows it all and is deemed therefore a guitar polymath. On a high level above everyone, very untouchable. At a point where it is all inside, just an endless, well all guitar knowledge inall consciousness he can tap and just flow lol.

I think what a lot of people don't take into account with Guthrie, is that in his tone is a demand to be incredibly accurate with what he does. The guys technicality is off the fucking scale! Stop being so snobbish about what 'qualifies' as 'blues' and just enjoy it for what it is! Mind boggling, bafflingly enchanting guitar wizardry!!!!
