I watched The Aristocrats (Boing - live) while cruising down an acid trip; was chillin in my bed, headphones on, & this XL iPad was big enough to draw me into the screen. All I was getting (in every psychedelic way you can think of) is that Guthrie Govan, Bryan Beller, & Marco Minnermann are the “gods” of their instruments, achieving a level beyond mastery: at unity. They are literally demi-gods (if you consider a “god of music” enveloping each instrument and style too) among us. There are the greats who are prrrrretty darn amazing at their art, but there is a clear distance between them combined and Guthrie alone. Another ridiculous demi-god that popped up a couple years ago is Harry Mack (Ultimate Freestyle Rapper / Poet / Improviser / Realtime Story Teller) … fuuuuuck, I’m baked 😶🌫️ … anyway, if you’ve read this far, thanks for holding on with my trip 😂 … Adios 🚀🔥💀☯️👻

I’m learning guitar on a 20 year old dreadnought, and i put heavy gauge strings on it so generally my left hand is exhausted and my finger placement has to be spot on or else everything buzzes. When I went to guitar center and tried out the flamed maple Guthrie Charvel with low action, jumbo stainless frets, perfect neck angle and factory strings holy shit my fingers were flying, I could do Gilmore bends and three fret chords were a breeze. I understand this notion that focusing on gear over technique is the wrong thing to do but, I would highly suggest getting comfortable on a heavy gauge acoustic primarily and not just “whatever you feel is comfortable”, in order to accelerate growth because something easy on the hands fundamentally is going to be a slower learning curve, almost like you wanna train for the Olympics but never increased the weight you were lifting or possibly even learned the wrong technique because the weight was so light. After I realized this, I thought I still may be far from Guthrie, but at least I can see the path for growth! If I keep practicing, scales, chords, song repertoire, jazz progressions, learning solos, on the heavy gauge acoustic it might take 5-10 years but I can see how someone could actually get close to Guthrie’s level of technical proficiency. Just developing that hardcore strength and muscle memory on the left hand. So just my two cents for anyone actually thinking about quitting or feels like they are at a plateau, theres no shortcut but the more you suffer in the beginning the easier the complicated and “showy” stuff becomes in the end. Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah everyone!

Its fairly commonplace to complain that GG is still workshop demo-ing his Erotic Cakes tracks from 2006. But given that in every single case, they are made new, and really, just as vivid and bright as the originals (if not more so sometimes), its really kinda fun. Like meeting an old friend who's had a whole makeover and re-invented themselves - in good ways. And I think that is because when you hear the EC originals, the interplay between the thematic material and the improvisations is so fluid and natural, when you hear a completely different take on the same tracks and its just as fluid and natural, you (well, I) just give up and say, well that's Guthrie for you.
