Udaman. With out giving it all away, can you tell us what your sequencing is. It seems you have a go to sequence in your scales , arps etc. Have you been woodshedding? Your at top of your game. Insane virtuosity. Ive had cancer for 22 years know. Playin probably keepin me alive. IDk. You inspire me to get better. Your time is greatly appreciated by all.

This hit the nail on the head man. I have thought exactly this without being able to put it into words. There is a whole generation of VERY gifted musicians that instead of honing their craft want to be the deadhead jammers getting high and being cool. Again...fine but the shame to me is that I really believe there are a bunch of Chris Thile or young Tony Rice caliber players that are content to play slop and not go where the music could take them with some dedication. Thanks for giving us som fresh thought and some access to your world. We all just want to be you ya lucky son of a gun.

That's my dream. I just started lessons and whiskey is my first assignment. I was assigned to learn it in every position on the fretboard and come up with 2 different chord voicings. Did it in one day haha!

It's easy to be humble when you play like I do. I admire you for your humility and for keeping it real. Your approach to the fretboard is like so many others that "get it", like Andy Wood, Jack Ruch, Tim Pierce.... blah blah blah. I'm slowly catching on; my brain gets it more so than my fingers. Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Danny Gatton - just ridiculous amounts of talent; they obviously get it.

I’ll add Russ Barenberg to your list of top-tier guitarists-gorgeous tone, great melodic sense. His Homespun video is one of my touchstones. The version of “Big Sciota” he, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and Sam Bush do on their “Skip, Hop, and Wobble” album is my favorite fiddle tune of all time. Thanks, GT, as always!

Also, THANK YOU THANK YOU for your absolute honesty. It may piss a lotta folks off. But I get what your sayin. We ALL have our own tastes. I’m gonna go check out some of these records right now. Thank you very much for the insight. Thank you for the suggestions. I didn’t have access to anything like this as a beginning guitar or stringed instrument lover so, this is real. This is what I love. I’m highly inspired by you sir. A friend/family member suggested you a couple years ago to me as a means to learn this wonderful instrument and I’ve enjoyed every video and recorded song you have produced that I know about. So again. Thank you sir for the great advice, the honesty, and the wonderful little lessons in music and life. Good day.

Guthrie- So something you said on this video I loved it more than anything I've heard you say...and I just went from being a fan to being HUGE fan because of it.....When you talked about you wish you could spend an hour on the phone with all of us because that how much this stuff means to me! WOW that is so cool in my book...and obviously the "stuff" in this case is music. So you see you are now talking person (me) who truly believes that I love music just about more than anyone on the planet...especially the early rock from the 60s and 70s. I could go on and on about that....But I did want to mention a documentary I watched last night about the Grateful Dead...now I wasn't a huge fan of theirs until last night AND when I found out that Jerry Garcia played the steel Guitar on CSNY Teach your children....and he had just learned how to play the Steel the day before !! OMG Anyway when they first started to play together they played blue grass and I mean they REALLY got into it and became really really masters at it. Then they picked up the electrics...and the song they end the documentary with -- Jerry plays some unbelievable guitar. Anyway - I brought all that up because of the way you said your roots came from bluegrass. LOL--well I just watched the last part of your Video and maybe your didn't think Jerry and the boys were any good? ....but they sure sounded good to me and they sure seemed to practice thier asses off ....granted that was way back in the early 60s when they were playing that....style

Guthrie, thank you for your down to earth comments!! Thank you for sharing some honest thoughts. Specifically about tuning and being in tune. How many band members tune to their own tuner not to the instruments of the other band members? I know this sounds "silly" but it does make a difference. Thanks!

Mr GT, if this is a "rant", then its a good rant. And it is not "elitist" to think a musician should be able to play well. A great artists learns how to do it well, and then from there can "break the rules" if the music calls for it. And it was wonderful to hear some of my acoustic hero's names mentioned! Thanks for sharing it is terrific.

I typically see you playing electric guitars live. Does playing an acoustic like this help you keep your Tele/Strat chops sharp, and do you recommend to your students that they consider picking up an acoustic for the same reason? Really love your spontaneous improv playing in your videos which is inspiring, and just hope you are able to find the time to continue these sessions!

As a singer who wanted to step up his guitar technique, I’ve been playing these fiddle tunes heads for a couple years now. I still have a hard time improvising over them. Love the DoDoDo’s exercise! It’s like the descending melody in BlackBerry Blossom but for some reason I never thought to apply that pattern to other tunes and over other chords. Total lightbulb moment. (And on a 00-21 no less! check out mine in my profile pic) Really Appreciate it Guthrie!
