I think this is way different though. When your doing those contract jobs your arrangement is as a contractor. When your full time employee your arrangement is that you will give that employer 8 hrs a day. Doing 2 gigs during these hours is dishonest.
@Matt-cr4vv Жыл бұрын
Not tied to one client but still tied to one employee such as the law firm or company your trade is in. There’s a difference in being a W-2 v a 1099. As an attorney you can’t have a conflict and represent so and so client but you also couldn’t be an employee of both firms which would be a conflict. Vastly different stuff. The realtor can have tons of clients but they can’t work for multiple agencies at once I don’t imagine (ReMax v Coldwell Banker). But if it was remote contract work for design I wouldn’t have much issue. But the paranoia to not disclose kinda feels like he thought it wasn’t right but to each their own really.

Find an easier way to do things (work 2 home jobs at the same time) people consider it unethical and shady. Once people find out, the haters come out with the crab mentality and start telling. Some companies get over on people all the time.

Both employers may benefit from this arrangement because his wages don't need to be raised to keep him on staff. As long as the companies are not competing with each other, it is a long term win for both companies. They decrease labor cost by sharing this skilled employee. It is actually a loss in the long run for the employee because he must exchange more of his finite resource (time) for less money per hour than he could get working one job.
@Wythaneye2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the companies you're working for. I used to work in a highly regulated (banking) company that required us to disclose all outside income/business activities due to conflicts of interest. They had to know who we were working with outside the company to protect themselves. Many companies have non-compete agreements in place, so you have to be careful that you're not working for a competitor at the same time, in which case you'd be in breach of contract and possibly lose both jobs. Some companies though, particularly tech companies, allow and almost expect employees to have other avenues of income. As long as it's not a breach of your employment contract, and getting your work done, there's really no reason not to.

Moving meetings to fit his 'other' schedule??? Amazing!!! I witnessed a situation at a large corporate job I had where a guy was hired who lived in Colorado and he took the job that was in California. He had a cubicle in Office A. I worked in Office B (200 miles away from Office A). So I would talk to this guy thinking he was in his cubicle in Office A. Occasionally, I would have to travel to Office A and I would always stop by this guy's cubicle to say hello in person. He was never there. About 6 months later, I heard that the guy was fired because he never moved from Colorado to California. He was working remotely from Colorado and had no intention of moving to California. It was the strangest thing I had ever seen personnel-wise. I was surprised he was able to hide it for so long. If I had been in charge, I would have fired him too. Honesty and integrity are important and I wouldn't want an employee that was living a lie. You just can't trust them. But the guy in the video didn't lie so much as he was checking out his options and it accidently worked out for him. Everyone knew about his situation and were willing to work it out. More power to him.

I consider a full time job to be 8 hours, so to work two full time jobs means 80 hours a week. If you say 6 hours a day, that's still 12x5 which is 60 hours a week. So you're working evenings and weekends to get your 60-80 hours per week in to satisfy the your obligations to two companies. If you're young, have few life obligations (no wife or kids) and can pull that off consistently, that's great. Personally, I prefer one full time job and a few good clients that I'm not required to book that many hours a week for. One of the challenges in the fast food industry is scheduling. Managers will deliberately give people unpredictable schedules so they can't take on additional work for other companies. We shouldn't just be kind to people who are highly skilled. because they have leverage. The Bible is very clear about how employers are to treat employees and it looks nothing like modern capitalism. If you can't pay your workers properly, you owe them a schedule they can fit other employers into.

The deceptive behavior is the only thing wrong here. I think this would have been the outcome for him if he came to his boss when he got hired and told him that this was what he wanted to do. If you are exceptional and exceptionally hard to replace most of the time you will be offered a better deal to stay exclusive or allowed to work at the other job. The big issue is if non-disclosure are involved, you don't inform everyone and something happens, you could really screw yourself and your reputation. I have a friend that noticed an employees screen open in the office when he popped out to make a call and they had left an invoice open for freelance work. Itemising the same hours he was in their office as billable hours for a client. A bunch of us business owners were out and he was telling this story asking for advice, because seeing the screen would be considered spying and against their company culture. In an unbelievable scenario of chance, another business owner said we hired “John” who used to work for you. He’s working remote and honestly I’ve no idea what he does, because he always has an excuse why he doesn’t make targets. Turns out it was the same guy and he was triple jobbing and getting nothing done for anyone. But everyone was desperate for staff so firing specialists seemed like a bad idea. In a small specialist area, the guys reputation is destroyed now and no one will hire him. In the three months he had been getting 2.5 pay checks he had bought expensive cars on finance. Apparently free lancing does pay so well when you don’t have a company paying for expensive software and computers. The worst part was they found out he actually delegated some research work to another colleague, that was for the other company the guy wasn’t working at and he didn’t know. He got fired but no legal repercussions. Both companies tightened their policies of “trust” so all other employees were slightly worse off. In my opinion if you need to hide income from your boss made during work hours it’s stealing. I believe his reputation will follow him until he leaves the area. So over a few years he’d have been better off financially having being honest.
