One of the biggest hits of the 1950's and it was big just as Elvis, rock-n-roll, and rockabilly took over music.

Guy Mitchell was a great singer, who was really popular in the 1950's. I'm a fan! This was a #1 hit for Guy. I hope you will also post Guy's "Call Rosie on the Phone" from the August 25, 1957 show as I remember that was a fun song too. Thanks so much for this great clip!

I saw this on the Sullivan Show today, and looked it up. Great little catchy song with good vocals and a good band. The performance is separate talent, but really makes it enjoyable to watch. The woman plays it up so well, and does a great job acting without saying a word. This type of music was very carefree and simplistic making it an enjoyable 2 minute tune. I am amazed when I think how much music changed in such a short period of time. I believe this was released in 1956 , and in just 10 short years The Beatles would be a part of a musical, and cultural revolution that would change music and the world. In 20 years the Sex Pistols would also be part of a revolution, forming the basis of a new type of music called punk. In that span of 20 years music changed more dramatically than it had in a long time. Those 20 years laid the foundation for most of the music we listen to today. But I always enjoying going back to music like this, that spawned the music that would change the world.

Marty Robbins cut "Singing the Blues" first and it hit the country chartrs first, in Sep., 1956. Mitch Miller heard the song and decided it would be a perfect song for Guy Mitchell. One month later, Guy's version hit the pop charts and made it to spend 10 weeks at #1. Meanwhile, Marty's version was spending 13 weeks at #1 on the Country charts. However, Marty's version also hit the Billboard Pop listing and reached #17. Needless to say, he felt that Mitch Miller had undercut him and and that Marty felt he should have had a #1 pop hit as well as the country listing. Miller, seeing how well Marty had done realized he had to make it up to Marty. Miller called Robbins, told him to find soemthing that might be a pop hit and bring it up to New York, where he could put Marty in the studio with Ray Conniff and cut it and then give it the full promo push that Columbia Records could do. The result was a hit your might remember, "A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)", #1 C&W hit and a solid #2 pop hit, along with a "gold record" award"

Guy Mitchel actually did it twice. Once with "singing the blues" and with "knee deep in the blues" which only hit top 3 in country for Marty Robbins but didn't even hit the pop charts, because Guy Mitchell quickly released his cover.

In the UK, Tommy Steele (and The Steelmen) climbed to no. 1 with their version on Jan 11, 1957. A week before, Guy Mitchell had been top of the charts, and he regained the top spot on Jan 18.
