Guy's Revolution: The plastic problem

Guy's properly angry in this one, good on him, the inaction by our govt is shameless: They're all mouth and no trousers. I'm proud to be a Riverford customer, thank you for increasing our awareness of these issues.

The blame is on the government, but it's ultimately because the system has allowed companies and individuals to siphon off so much wealth that they can afford "regulatory capture" essentially buying off the government, so they can further exploit people and the environment for fatter short-term profits.

Cucumbers in plastic... I've just moved back to the UK after 14 years away and I cannot get my head around why you need to put cucumbers in a wrap, that protects them from? nothing. I've not eaten cumber since I got back ;o)

How can we manage this without government if they won't act for us? Would you start a petition Guy, or help start a campaign that enables all of us to persuade our own councils to adopt a unified recycling scheme, which ultimately could lead us to be able to recycle everything, or get our local councils to refuse the sale of items that can't be recycled. How can we take action ourselves?

I buy from Riverford and they are great. The packaging is mostly plastic free.

Wanted to disagree with Guy on most of this but he is 100% spot on. Plastics are often painted as the enemy but its what is done with them end of life that is the problem. Many so called greener alternatives are actually not that case whatsoever when you consider life cycle CO2 which is a bigger threat to the world as much as seeing wildlife affected by plastic in our oceans breaks everybody's hearts.

What does Unified Curbside Collection mean please? As I’m not in UK. Does is mean that garbage is not sorted and collected together? Or does it mean garbage that is sorted into the various glass/plastic/green waste and landfill bags - are simply collected on the same day?

Even within each county e.g. Devon, the council's choose different colours for their bins. Some collect glass mixed with paper and plastic, others segregate or exclude. There are no best interest standards - no unification.

Riverford doing compostable packaging thats good news. I wish all the supermarkets moved their food packaging over to this.

Keep your rant going Guy.. we are behind you as you say! There will come a time when which ever Government is in power they will unify both the packaging and the collection as you say. It is undeniably the sane thing to do.

We can blame complacency, incompetence, ignorance or naivety but it's mainly to do with money, power and corruption. Your a fool if you think politics is a system in place to better the people and the environments they live in.
