Got these for my old Epiphone G 310. Also put a Guyker roller bridge . Both fit perfectly. Noticed the locking tuners really make a difference . Money well spent.

I installed a set of gold Guyker vintage tuners on my Harley Benton TE 69 Thinline. The bushing were a wee bit larger in diameter than the original chrome ones so I did have to do some drilling. It was easier than I thought although I did make a couple of minor mistakes ( first time I have attempted to change tuners ). I found these tuners to be very good. They work perfectly. I bought mine off of Amazon and paid $65.99 Canadian for them, with free shipping and no tax.

The only thing I'd say about your video is this. It'd be better if you slacked the string a bit more so that there is a full wrap on the tuning post rather than pulling it tight before locking it. This prevents the string from the 90 degree break right out of the tuner, which could cause it to snap there. Been there, done that. It's more common on the un-wound strings. On the B and high E strings I also run the string through the post, around it and through it again so that the locking mechanism has more meat to bite into. Otherwise, thanks for the review and thanks for the comment on the pickups. That was going to be my next question!
@FretboardDiaries
@FretboardDiaries Жыл бұрын
Right on man, what you’re saying totally makes sense. I’ve really yet to have a breakage issue at that point, but it makes sense. The double wrap for extra bite may be something I’ll try on guitars where I run extra-light gauge things for days when the arthritis flares up (it’s hell getting old 😂 🤦‍♂️) Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching 🤘🎸

This comment is absolutely on point. Once I entered the realm of locking tuners I went for the best from Hipshot to Gotoh to Fender and others. Whenever I pulled the strings straight like that, I ended up with breakages. It's best ,in my experience, as the comment states....to allow a bit of slack. The high E and B as mentioned, are notorious when it comes to this issue. Ever since I started giving some slack, the stability and performance has been on point. Great video otherwise. Glad to see someone do a review on these.

Nice informative video. I almost ordered Guyker tuners but ran across and installed Tone Ninja Locking tuners on my IYV IP-350 TBK PRS. They are very nice tuners with a 19:1 ratio. The fit and finish are well done, too. They were a perfect fit and the buttons were identical to the originals, which I believe are a mini button. I had an issue with one of the tuners, contacted Tone Ninja and had a response back within an hour or two! They opted to replace it and shipped it out the very next day! Their customer service is absolutely amazing. My guitar stays in tune very nicely now; even after setting for days without playing it. Here's a tip...when locking the string down with the locking knob, don't over tighten it! Just snug tight works fine. Over tightening can ruin the tuner.

Thanks for the thorough review. I'm considering buying these tuners for a budget Ibanez GRX40 but have read mixed reports. Your review was very useful. FWIW the screws are #1 Philips head. #2 is a more common size in most products, but can potentially lead to damaged screw heads in used on #1 screws. If the correct #1 driver is used, the screws should come out without difficulty. I don't recommend the small drivers shown, their quality is typically poor, they often don't fit the screw heads properly, and can lead to damage of screws
@FretboardDiaries
@FretboardDiaries 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah great advice man… I used those smaller drivers on two other guitars without issue, but the screws didn’t really have any resistance coming out. The moment I tried on this Harley and the screws were in tight, it was clear they weren’t gonna work… haha… So yeah, definitely gonna grab a set of correct drivers. Thankfully the larger screw driver I had worked well. Regarding the tuners, I too have heard mixed reviews. I like them, for $25, they function and seem to work well. As mentioned in the video, a couple were tighter than I would have liked but at the price point, it’s hard to complain. They seem ideal for a budget guitar 🤘🎸 Thanks for watching!

Ref tightness of tuners their is a screw on the top of tuner that adjusts tension on the tuner knob clockwise puts more tension on anti clockwise loosens tension
@FretboardDiaries
@FretboardDiaries 7 ай бұрын
Yeah it unfortunately wasn’t a result of the screw on top of the tuner button… It was more of a tightness in the gears, and to be fair, it wasn’t really bad, just more of an inconsistency, which is pretty common among budget tuners…

I had two of the tuners that had that feeling… Felt a little tighter than they should have. It’s a toss up between these and the Kaynes. The Kaynes tuners looked the same, but felt lighter and more like the stock ones. These had a better weight and feel but a few seemed too tight. Ultimately for $25 as long as they functional, I’m happy for a budget instrument…

I was looking at these for a couple of projects but I ended up going with Tone Ninja locking tuners from E-bay. One thing I like about Tone Ninja is they offer a ton of alternative style tuning buttons. I'm doing a Strat project with GFS 60's repro pickups and wanted that 60's style butter bean tuning buttons but locking tunings Which thanks to Tone Ninja I was able to do. They are pretty nice and only sold by one seller called sporthitech. The GFS 60's repros are sooo good sounding. I originally wanted to get the more surfy 64 grey bottom but they only had the bridge pickup in stock. Im happy I went with the 60's repros though because I have never heard a non vintage, non Fender Strat sound so correct. The other project I put the Tone Ninjas in was a LTD M10 that I had put the black GFS Power Rails in and that thing was just a monster when run through a Stax Holy War pedal. To me its like those pickups and that pedal were made for each other.

@@FretboardDiaries your video is what got me to pick the power rails they killed it! That guitar had a lot of intonation issues like the bridge was placed wrong on the body so I let it go and picked up a store branded generic Strat. I'm swinging way far from a screaming metal Power Railed powered monster for a mellow surfy strat lol. I went with the standard 60'S repros not the Texas or overwound which is probably the mellowest set of pickups I have ever put in a guitar. The bridge is like 5.8k. They are so clear and to my bad ears keep a lot of definition when the amps gain is cranked. Haven't ran them through any pedals yet but so far so good.

So you’re kinda right on the borderline of guitar value where it may be worth it to invest in a little better tuner… These Guyker’s are great for budget guitars, particularly sub-$300 guitars. Given this guitar retails new around $450, you may want to Consider a set of Wilkinson or Gotoh locking tuners… Those are kinda the next step up from the budget Guyker tuners. They are really nice and super smooth, and yes, more money, but you’re getting something for that coin… To be fair, the Guykers would work fine, it’s about value and what you want to add to your guitar. I was thinking about installing locking tuners after I get my Harley Benton TE-20HH SBK that I ordered yesterday. Do other non-HB brand tuners fit? I read someone had an issue with Wilkinson for example holes not aligned. Yours look nice but would prefer an all black look but who knows I might relent. The other one you had should be the same as this, but who knows maybe the serial was a bit off or you know as it with evry production there are some oscillations, and i assume if tuners are working they won't trow them but sell them for a smaller amount of $ ( i may be wrong about that).

@@FretboardDiaries Just to add the issue that you had with tightness you can change that mate, just release a bit that screw in the ''head' of a tuner. I'm not joking Hipshot tuners are made there, yes some are ''made in the Us'' but a lot of them aren't and for me made in nowadays is some sort of game of words. for example i had issues with US hipsots that screw broke, the one that geos on the beck of head-stock, it was made from a softer alloy and it broke/crack half way into wood, so it gave me issue to drill it out.

@GUITAR P0RN MHO they are good as Grovers, Hipshot etc. Due to the ate made in the best tuners factory ''Der Jung'' , another 2 big factories are ''Jin Ho'' they make Wilkinson , Grovers etc and ''Sung Il'' in Korea that makes Gotoh, Floyd Rose tremolos etc. So Brands like guyker order them and it's cheep oday to do a laser inprints on the back, others are doing the same. A larger brand only ask for a bit difrent outlook but the quality is top of the line no matter which one you take. ''Ping'' from Taiwan that makes Fender trems, tuners is also great. In era of CNC and HQ electronic control of process there is no need to spent more then 30ish Euros/ US$ on a good locking tuners. All the rest We are paying hypes, marketing and some sort of fake ''prestige''. Of course those who wish to can spent 100$ on name if they wish to, it's a free world at least for that much.

Ive not yet heard anyone talk about the tuners setting the strings tight by hand and then locking the button. This is not wise. It tunes with the weight pull on the string in the worst break angle like a knife edge. Im not saying the strings will break , im bringing it to others attention that i find it illogical and with all the time saved i let the string wrap 1/4 to 1/2 a wrap where it takes some of the tension off the string bend angle. Anyone else do this or am i paranoid? Loll😅

I hear what you’re saying… Even with pulling the string tight (not super tight, just so there’s no slack), it still needs to be tuned and that usually ends up putting about 1/4 to 1/2 a wrap on. With that said, I’ve got 5 guitars with locking tuners and never had an issue with strings breaking. I tend to use a lighter gauge string too because of arthritis, so it doesn’t seem to be an issue. What you’re saying makes sense, just doesn’t seem to be a problem…

They've held up well... This guitar gets played a lot, it's kinda like one of the "House" guitars that anyone whose over visiting plays. I also record with it a lot because I love the Powerrails in it, so its seen some use. So far no issues at all 👍

So was it the bushing or the guitar hole diameter? Measure the outer diameter of the bushing to verify if it is to spec, guitars are a system you can’t blame one thing without looking at The Whole. Can’t blame a bushing for being to small if it measures to the right spec and your hole is to large.
@FretboardDiaries
@FretboardDiaries 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying… The bushings fit fine in this guitar… The only issue I had was that two of them needed a little force to be threaded on… That had nothing to do with the guitar but… The Kaynes tuners I had mentioned from a previous review were very snug on the Jackson Kelly if that’s what you’re referring to… And in that respect, you’re right, it could have been the holes we’re not drilled to spec…
@bluwng
@bluwng 2 жыл бұрын
@@FretboardDiaries no, the basic premise is you can not assume there is something wrong with something unless it’s verified, that’s it. The example I used was stating a bushing doesn’t fit therefore the bushing is at fault. You need to measure the diameter of the hole and bushing to verify, not a good practice to assume one or the other let the actual data/ measurement decide. Forget the example the takeaway is proper measurable verification.

@@bluwng I think you might have misunderstood what I was referring to… I was referring to tightness in the threading from the bushing threading into the tuner…. Has nothing to do with the guitar spec, and is a direct result of the tuner… It made it harder to tighten down the bushing into the tuner…

I put Kaynes on a Jackson Kelly I have and I really like them too… Although they were lighter, they worked just as good… So… 🤷‍♂️… I like them both, but I think I like the feel of the Guyker’s better… Guyker just felt a little more solid, however, if I had a guitar with neckdive, I’d do the Kaynes because they were lighter… Hope that helps 🤘🎸

@@FretboardDiaries the minute I tighten the screw to lock them, it slices the string…and it’s the D string on 8-38’s. But I tried it on 9-46’s and it still breaks. I’m assuming it’s a quality control issue. Probably the machining process left sharp edges around the string post. I’ll try modding it but if it happens again, I’ll toss them.

It’s always possible you got a lemon… I recently purchased a set of tuners called Dopro… Supposedly Korean made… The post inside was too long and you couldn’t thread the back button on or get the string through the post. That’s a fair critique… It’s funny you mentioned this because I just finished an install/review of MusicLily tuners and I went back and looked at the title of this vid a few days ago and realized I didn’t put “install” anywhere in the title. I’m definitely gonna edit it later when I have a moment. I do feel like I covered the pros and cons to these tuners, but maybe a more in depth comparison between these, the Kaynes, and the MusicLily tuners would be good to highlight what they each do well or don’t…
