I love this, although going into sprints, I realise that a lot of our "Understand" phase involves research that would take weeks to months to acquire the right data that could drive us to make the right decisions. In saying that, I would advise anyone to ensure you have the data on hand before embarking on the 5-day sprint.

Interesting, a 5 day sprint, do you believe such approach would work for software development in the long process, or is it more during "creation" phase, where you would otherwise be running brainstorming sessions, etc?

Sprints totally work during an agile Dev project (such approach is also called "Design spike" ). You just need to have to make a big change in your product (like rethink the homepage)

If design sprints actually worked, why don't we do design sprints every week for our entire product. Answer: you'd get burn out because it's not a good sustainable process. It requires people to take shortcuts and cut corners. I get the idea of not spending months designing something that won't work, but design sprints are abused by the business as a way to force designers to work faster. I hate them.
