When Resident Evil 4 launched in 2005, it redefined both the third-person shooter and survival horror genres with inventive camerawork and visceral gameplay mechanics. For years after its advent, countless developers followed the game’s lead, emulating Shinji Mikami, who was the franchise’s co-creator, and his techniques for their own endeavors. However, barring the likes of Gears of War, hardly any of these titles managed to further innovate the genre. It would take another Mikami-directed adventure to reinvigorate third-person shooters with something completely fresh. The game in question is none other than the still highly-regarded Vanquish.
In essence, Vanquish was a product of Mikami’s desire to reject the then standard characteristics of first and third-person shooters alike, especially those of the cover-based variety. As a result, speed-infused gameplay took precedence during Vanquish’s creation, as the team at PlatinumGames approached the project as though it were a melee-oriented action game-a genre in which everyone involved was much more familiar. This strategy yielded a genuinely unique experience that many believe remains unparalleled.
It’s noteworthy that such esteem is held for a lesser-known, 7th console generation one-off with seemingly no hope for a sequel in sight. But perhaps the varying qualities that make Vanquish so distinctive constitute the reason for its continued relevance in the minds of all who have ventured through Mikami’s sci-fi world.
This is the history of Vanquish.

What I still love about Vanquish is it's one of those unique shooters that each time you play it, you can approach enemy encounters differently and experiment with all the diverse techniques your character can execute making the game never feel stale. @@Psilocybin77 I don't think that's true. The _-or_ spelling comes from Latin, whilst the _-our_ spelling comes from Old French. The _-u_ spelling was used more until the 1600s. Then people started to advocate a return to the Latin spelling based both on etymological and phonetical grounds, whilst others starkly resisted. As there was no official standard, different people used different spellings. By the late 1700s, things were becoming more standardised as per Johnson's dictionary in Britain and then Webster's in America. Each country sort of instinctively latched onto whatever the other one wasn't doing as some form of national identity, but prior to this, many spellings were used with equal frequency in both countries. Anyway, the point is, there is no correct spelling I use the _-u_ spellings. I'm used to them. They're not wrong. Neither is the Latin spelling.

I can see their point, but Vanquish was such a blast it felt worth it. There is not a single shooter I love more than Vanquish. The speed and movement, the weapons, the settings, the main character, the slow mo.... All of it SO DAMN GOOD. RIP Vanquish. We never got a sequel let alone anything like it.

Vanquish was one of the first games I got when I finally took the dive and decided to get a PS3, and one of the only titles I ever really spent a good amount of time playing on the PS3 (I'm a PC Gamer, so outside of the odd stand-out exclusives there was little reason to use my PS3). I heard some good things about it, and it was cheap to pick it up used, so I did, and I was astounded by just how fast and fluid the game was, how good it was took me by surprise for sure. Although, now I'm older, coming back to it for the PC release a couple years ago, I do struggle to play it for long periods of times now. It's pretty intense, so playing it for an hour or so makes me feel drained now. Better in shorter bursts lol. I feel like if the campaign was longer it would overstay it's welcome anyway. While I still love the game, there is a few things in it that don't work quite as well as they should (which with the power of experience and hindsight I can now recognise), such as the weapon upgrade system (which ultimately dissuades you from actually mixing up your weapons, when the intent was probably to encourage it), which I hope if we ever do get a sequel they will address. Also yeah, the QTEs need to be thrown in the bin lol. I'm not even sure what some of the symbols mean.

Weird I literally just but it a couple days ago on PS4. Still loved it as much as I did back on the 360. I'm not picky when it comes to graphics, but Vanquishish looks so good at 60fps. Sam taught me that you can smoke a pack a cutscene and still properly pilot an exosuit

People always say Resi 4 was first over the shoulder third person shooter but Ghost Recon 2 beat them by almost a year. it was a game changer they used perfectly in Advanced Warfighter too. That game beat COD and Gears and Resi in sales that year. People forget bout how damn good it was.

I remember playing Vanquish as a 8 year old on my ps3, I raged so much but beating the game was a big achievement for me.

Just watched the GDC talk on the Doom Eternal team implementing this same "push forward combat" design. really cool to see earlier games going for the same thing
