I still think that Prey 2017 would've been better off having its own unique name free from the emotional baggage carried from Human Head's original entries. Reusing the "Prey" name for the 2017 game was not a smart move. Especially considering that it came out right after Prey 2's development history was revealed to the public.

I ignored Prey 2017 for a few years after release due to lack of interest based on all the drama (personally I didn't think Prey 2 looked that good and it also had very little to do with the original so it wasn't because I was mad about it getting cancelled). I eventually picked it up cheap after trying the demo* and it was a good game. They should never have used the Prey name. *So many games i've picked up that I otherwise would not have because of demos. Devs/pubs need to learn the asset demos are and need to make more.

The overall environmets and rich variety of enemy designs looked promising, hope they reconsider picking up the project where it left off, they could do so much more with the current technology

Remember all you saw was trailers and videos of demos. That doesn't mean the game was actually good or salvageable. Look at Cyberpunk 2077. I think the decision to call the Arkane game Prey is questionable, but at least we got a great game.

Fully fixed is such ambiguous term, like ask yourself this is there any game that is even fully fixed? Its clear youre just being bias because you were disappointed by them in the past. Im not sure either you havent played these games currently or just have a potato pc, but they literally fixed major game breaking bugs. Theres a reason skyrim is re release like a million time which is stupid if they didnt fix the bugs, and eversince the disastrous launch of fallout 76 its at least heard the community and prolly out of guilt made the battle pass free for all. I didn’t play Prey 2017 until 3 years later. What a fantastic game. If it was named something else I would have played it way sooner. Something similar to System Shock or Bioshock since it clearly a spiritual success to SS and I absolutely love those games.

Which is funny since BioShock was always billed as a System Shock successor, so has Prey 2017....but Prey 2017 is so much closer to the spirit of System Shock than what BioShock ever was. The issue I had with BioShock then and even more so now, is how incredibly mediocre it's core combat is in a game so heavily focused on being "system shock-esque" which itself never outright prioritized combat. And it's heavy reliance on linearity and lack of environmental options of getting around. Much like the titles Prey 2017 was heavily influenced by, there are just so many options available to you that is much more than just "do I go shooty shooty, bonk, or hand look cool ability?". Need to get to a high place because you want to avoid a difficult fight ahead early on? Build a ladder out of random scenery items. Want to stealth? Stealth is actually viable because enemies don't insta aggro once you get into their aggro radius. Prey in a lot of ways is closer to OG Deus Ex than it is to the other 2 titles.

@@lutherheggs451 I think is fair to say that many more games, where inspired by Prey info and early E3 demos, than Human Head Prey "borrowed" from other games. Prey 1 portal tech, was being discussed and shown working, years before Narbacular drop or Valve Portal even existed, wall walking, was on a past 3DRealms game and seen in a different form, in the old Aliens VS Predator games and spirit walking, that imo was pretty much new, at lest to me, but I could be wrong, most games today share many many features between themselves, that imo is hard to say, this or that is unique anymore.

I did not expect a spiritual successor to BioShock and system shock when I started playing it and honestly that comparison doesn’t even do it justice because it does it’s own thing so well.

There's a video about Arkane's Prey over on the Noclip channel, that interviews the dude where it goes over why it was named Prey. Obviously I paraphrased, but the main idea was the same. Prey's just a cool name. He wasn't wrong thinking that, just wrong in calling it that after what happened with Prey 2.

Just started playing Prey 2017 and I love it. Arkane is currently working on Redfall and probably working on the Xbox Series port of Deathloop. But, I hope that the rumors of the studio working on a sequel to Prey is true and prefer that than Redfall and a Deathloop port.

I got the newest Prey on sale about a year or two ago on steam. At first it looked like a horror game which is probably why I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but I think I had seen a trailer or some gameplay later on that caused me to seek it out plus it was on sale so figured why not. It turned out to be a pretty fun game and was kinda upset that they didn't seem to market it that well. And because of all that it probably didn't sell well enough for them to make a sequel to it so now we wont get one and that stinks.

prey for 360 was part of my late childhood. such a creative imaginative world. i even tripped on mushrooms watching a friend play it. there are only a handful of studios that do this kind of amazing artwork. games like portal and super mario galaxy and psychonauts... i was so disapointed that the new prey had nothing to do with the original. such a shame to steal a name like that. thats like taking the name pink floyd or tupac or queen and trying to become relevant imagine if prey2 came out and tommy was still the protaganist but he had to flee from earth due to the events in the 360 game. he turns bounty/vigalante in a alienated cyberpunky type world. and since he is cherekee, he has that cyberpunky bounty with a taste of native american look to him. bam new xbox character logo name next to marcus fenix and master chief. thanks for the nostaglic videos

I really adore the original Prey from 2006, I still have a copy of it for my 360. The 2017 reboot on the other hand was such a large departure from the original 2006 version I just couldn't truly enjoy it as a "Prey" game. I ended up not finishing it as I just wasn't feeling any soul the original had. I've debated on trying it again with a fresh perspective though because so many people really like the 2017 reboot, but the only way I'm personally going to be able to accomplish that is if I treat as something other than Prey. That game really should have been titled something else, calling the 2017 version "Prey" is like calling Goldeneye Rogue Agent a "007" game which is far from the truth.

I find myself wondering if the name "Prey" is just cursed. Each game had their own version of development hell somehow, which would normally make sense if all 3 came from the same place, but 1 of them was completely and totally separate from the other 2.

The Prey name isn't cursed, Prey 2 is. The first Prey 2 got cancelled, and I very much doubt there will be another one because Prey 2017 flopped hard.

Yes, the launch was rough, due to very poor marketing from Bethesda, but the game still sold over a million copies eventually, and with its release on Game Pass with a 60 FPS boost, the game is currently in its best state and is being played by many more people now.

Just finished up my second playthrough of Prey (2017) a few hours ago. I really loved Prey 2006 and was really excited for Prey 2, and I think that disappoint is what kept me from giving Prey 2017 a try. I'm glad I did. It's my favorite game. I haven't fallen in love with a game this much since i played the original deus ex.

I've always been of the view prey 2017 is more true to the original concept of prey than what we were suppose to get from prey 2 , while the prey 2 was a narrative sequel using the main character from the first game to be our literal spirit guide until we free him, it sounded like it was going to lose the appeal of a normal human who is trapped on a ship full of aliens instead making it more of a star wars "aliens exist and they're cool people"

Both are great games that I really love. The soundtrack for the original Prey from Jeremy Soule is a masterpiece. It’s a shame the 3Drealms 3D engine was never fully realised. That looked incredible back in the day. It could’ve benifitted the development of Duke Nukem forever in the long run.

This was the first game that put my Nvidia GTX 8800 to it's limit. It was the second gaming PC I had built, so the first time I actually knew what I was doing. I loved Prey, wish it would get a true sequel.

Crazy how to this day High on Life has probably been the closest to what Prey 2 looked like it might be. Seeing that old footage still makes me want a version of that, and it's wild that it just went away. Future looks meh wit Redfall, even seeing it's Arkane working with ex-Human Head Studios people. Also, remembering that basically the last thing they did was The Quiet Man isn't the most faith inspiring, but here's hoping popping vamps is fun!

The world wasn't ready for PREY. I am not even a big gamer, but I played and beat PREY when it came out and felt like it was an insanely gripping, emotional and immersive experience. I usually lost interest in shooters because I can't feel connected or immersed, and typical gameplay could be monotonous but PREY was constantly surprising and exciting and I cared about the story, characters and world. It still looks great! And the loss of PREY 2 is criminal. I dunno what PREY 2017 is, but I wouldn't have called it PREY at all...

Don't get me wrong, I was one of those people who was absolutely blown away by the trailers, and completely devastated by the cancellation of it. To the point that I refused to play Arkane's Prey out of spite. Ironically enough though, after giving it a try, it's become one of my most beloved games. But I think that ultimately, Prey 2 wouldn't have lived up to the hype. I'm not saying that it wouldn't have been a great game, but after years of it being gone, and hearing all the stories about it, the game seems less like something real. Instead it feels much like a game many people poured their hopes and dreams into what it "could be" rather than what was feasibly possible, for any dev. Which is pretty similar to what happened with Cyberpunk 2077 (ignoring the horrible launch and countless bugs). The concept of an "open world bounty-hunter sim on a cyberpunk-esque alien world" leaves a lot to interpretation, especially with how open-ended the trailers were, and I think a lot of people projected what they envisioned onto it. Which is why nowadays it's reached almost mythical status after its cancellation. The cancellation of the game has done more for the title than the actual release could have ever done. Would I have loved Prey 2? Absolutely. Am I pissed that it never saw the light of day? You bet your ass. Do I think it would have been the greatest game of all time (as evidenced by the constant discussion about it)? Probably not. Do I wish that I'm wrong, and if the game released it would have been an incredible masterpiece that's still played to this day? Darn tootin.

Having literally no idea that Prey 2017 was not the first and it was a reboot. Prey 2017 is hands down one of the best games I’ve ever played. Story’s engaging, solid characters, good gameplay and amazing visual design. Dearly wish Prey 2 would be a thing but shame for the original fans I guess.

The game I wanted to play was *_Prey 2_*-- a sequel for one of my favorite games (Prey 2006). And I would be playing that game for now if was not for Bethesda's greed. So forgive me if I have zero interest in that stupid immersive sim and its ridiculous storyline about crazy scientists trying to teach empathy to alien blobs of tar/smoke.

I personally i think it was on point for the devs to have a south American protagonist in the first prey game cos while we feel strange whenever aliens are mentioned a lot of native American genuinely believe in them,some tribes even call these aliens "star people".

There's 4 questions I have about the whole Prey story: 1 - How did Bethesda end up with the intellectual property 'Prey' if it was owned by 3D Realms? 2 - Why did they name the game that Arkane made 'Prey', instead of just giving it a new franchise? 3 - What is Roundhouse studios doing now? Human Head was 'remade' as a new studio at Bethesda named 'Roundhouse Studios', but there hasn't been a single word of what they're working on. Are they working on anything or have they been shut down, particularly since the Microsoft acquisition? 4 - If Bethesda as they claim didn't intentionally financially bleed out Human Head so that they could acquire the studio, why is that once Human Head was financially bled out by the contract deal with Bethesda for Prey 2, Bethesda did in fact acquire the studio? (ie. it sounds like a complete lie and that's exactly what they intended to do - the reason being seems obvious - there is a finite number of top quality game studios in the world. Bethesda was able to get them for no financial cost other than what they had paid up to that point for the Prey 2 development, which would have been significantly less money than the cost of a studio acquisition)

See noclip documentary on Arkane studios. Bethesda wanted to use the name Prey in some game and offered it to Arkane. Arkane liked it and decided to use it as it conveyed the game motives pretty well

@@PratikAnand I've seen it, but I guess I just fundamentally disagree with their use of it for the purpose of 'we own this IP so lets just use it for something'. Prey 2017 should have just been given a new franchise name because what if you wanted to make another game in the vein of System Shock - what do you call that now? Is that Prey 2? If you eventually did want to make a game more in the vein of the original Prey (mechanics-wise) then what is that called? You can't even buy the original Prey on Steam anymore - Bethesda essentially erased its' existence. Just a complete marketing stuff up all around in my opinion.

I'm currently scouring KZbin looking into the Prey video game franchise's influence on Prey, the 2022 film, since there's definitely some connection with it, at least thematically. Regardless, I'm blown away at this documentary style approach to the history of this franchise's development. Great work!!

@@ebenezerspludge8369 I don't even think they can legally do that if they wanted (and Bethesda would be scummy enough to try it) I remember reading that they brought in Obsidian to come and finish it like they do with a bunch of other unfinished or busted RPG's but discovered the engine was owned by Human Head and since they didn't agree to get bought and Bethesda bleed them until there wasn't a company left forced them to abandon it completely.

Only on PC you can't buy it anymore. 2K cannot make new cd keys without making a deal with Zenimax, and there are still existing keys out that may have not been redeemed on Steam. Yes, 2K did literally run out of Prey keys during a Steam sale. The xbox 360 version remains available for digital sale.

I remember many years ago reading about the upcoming game Prey in a german PC Gamer Magazine. I was fascinated by the portals, the gravity and the graphics, but sadly couldn’t play it on my bad pc. To this day I still have to play the original Prey , heard so much good stuff about it
