Gwinnett County 2022 Teacher of the Year explains why he's leaving the school district

Lee Allen, named the 2022 Gwinnett County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in December, taught ninth-grade algebra at Archer High School and coached wrestling. Gwinnett County's top teacher said he's leaving the school district, citing a disconnect between superintendents, school administrators and teachers regarding the post-pandemic challenges teachers face.

And 100% of the things he said were true. Several administrators at our local high school were promoted to administration. It didn't take them long at all to forget what it was like. They just roam the halls, mumbling into their walkie-talkie, trying to seem important. In actuality, they just look like fools.

I work for a small, rural school district. Our class sizes are rarely more than 20 students per class. Every problem he mentioned is happening here too. I think this is a nation wide problem. There is some serious decay going on in our country.

I started way back in 1980 and it was horrible in the Los Angeles area. I moved away from there in 83 and things were much better. By 1992 most of the kids had moved towards my new district and all of the problems started over again. The hallways and playgrounds were a war zone at anytime. So the school began to be ran like a prison. Retirement never felt so good 🥰

Every word he said is true. I work in another school district in GA and since these kids came back in the building, there is a big shift in the issues we face daily. The disrespect is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, students feel it’s ok to walk up in a teachers face and threaten violence, do tik tok videos while the teacher is teaching, then when the phone gets taken away, the parents call or show up ready to get confrontational with the staff. The poor teachers and staff get cursed out daily by both students and parents, it’s sad teachers do not get the support of parents. They send these kids to school with all kinds of behavioral issues then expect the teachers to fix it. They are there to teach, not parent your child, that’s something that starts in the home. I could go on and on, it’s just sad to see so many teachers leaving the classrooms because they don’t get the support of the administration or the parents. At the end of the day, it will take a community effort to bring about a change, but it starts in the home. Children are a reflection of what they see and hear at home, disciplining and teaching your children to be respectful to others, will create a better community and will ultimately lead to a better school environment🙏🏽

My daughter wanted to be a teacher since she was in 2nd grade, she grew up, followed her dream and became a great teacher. After 8 years it's sad to see her dreading going to her job everyday and thinking about making a career change. Large class sizes, uncaring parents and disrespectful students with no repercussions for the students is the biggest issue. No contract or raises for 3 years while the superintendent gets a 15% raise and a $50K bonus during Covid .

Amen!!! My husband is an educator and he is appalled by what he is now witnessing in schools. There are generations of students that are in public schools in the US, that are uneducated, forced to be pushed to graduate just so the school can check off a box. Here’s an example of what my husband experienced, who teachers AP and Honor Courses: Literally four students at the end of the year FAILED ALL FOUR SEMESTERS and THE FINAL and he had countless conversations, reached out to their parents, updated Canvas and yet they still were failing. My husband has been teacher of the year TWICE and won the highest honor in the COUNTRY in his curriculum, so not only is he one of the best, he has been honored to the point where there is a huge photo of him in the school. He is actually a teacher that cares and goes above and beyond for his students, many have gone on to accomplish great things, but he is horrified at the lack of motivation and lack of accountability for students today. I digress. So at the end of the school year, the parents and the students demand a meeting with my husband and DEMAND that he make exceptions and let them do extra credit so they can graduate on time. Listen, in all four cases my husband absolutely refused and it was only because of his stellar reputation that the administration supported him. He was so angry at the audacity of students and their parents that expect to do absolutely nothing and still expect a teacher to make allowances so they can pass. These students are not prepared for the real world, they will FAIL at college and work because they are lazy, not disciplined and do not have the mental acumen and emotional awareness to compete in a global economy. After the pandemic I have seen my husband work up to five hours after work at the end of a semester because administration decided that students can turn in all missed work to make the quarter and semester. These students are lazy, lackadaisical and not disciplined. They can’t compete. As a boss in STEM, I am seeing an older work force that is still healthy and strong that is running circles around the younger generations because they just aren’t prepared to work hard and get the job done.

@The Oracle I don't understand WHY students don't try, or why they even go to school if they are not going to do anything, or how they don't consider that they will fail or get a bad grade if they do nothing! I have NEVER understood that! I grew up in relative poverty in a high crime area in Maryland near Washington DC, but when I went to high school in the early 2000s I understood that there was a reason why I was going and that I should not be there if it wasn't for that reason. It's just like with having a job, you show up to the job because you know you are supposed to do a job in order to get paid and you certainly would not go to your job location if you did not plan on doing your job. It just wouldn't make any sense to do that at all, aside from the fact that you would not get paid if you showed up and didn't do work. What I wonder is that aside from the recent inclination to just pass students even when they haven't done what is required, how do careless or lazy students even get by without doing anything? Are they not given failing grades or do their grades not suffer when they don't do anything? I only ask because it sounds like there are a great many students anymore who just don't care, but it seems lik ,e the fact that they will fail or get bad grades would make them care if nothing else. Because really a student can't just expect or assume that the school will have that same inclination to just pass them for just doing the bare minimum. Teachers who actually care will not do that, regardless if it makes the school look bad or if they get less money.

I have been teaching for over 15 years and while yes there have been changed in regards to discipline and the Teaks I don't consider myself a correctional officer. I have taught Jr high and elementary and I have loved every minute of it. I have worked with many different administrators and while a couple were not my favorite, they all meant well. The issue is many teachers don't want to use positive reinforcement in their behavior strategy.

I am a physician and I homeschool my now teenage children 5+ Years. They are respectable accountable and funny. Skin in the game and team work helps us all achieve our goals while having a family life. While homeschool may not be an option for many expecting the above virtues will help at home and at school. It's too bad teachers unions largely supported shutting schools and doing remote learning, and actively fought reopening them. Parents begged, and some experts warned about the consequences to development of children, but too many local and state governments and teachers unions just didn't care, they wanted to be remote.

When children are raised by irresponsible adults, they grow up thinking their behavior is normal. When they become parents themselves, they pass it down to their own children. Parent here as well. I'm right there with ya. My wife and I have made a pact with each other to never give our children a smart phone. We always tell them when they ask for one, that they can have one when they get older, have a job, and can pay the bill. Need to call us? Here's a prepaid track phone. You get 3 numbers. Mine, your Mom's, and your Nana's. Pick one if you need to talk to someone. No other numbers, and no internet access. But I digress. During Covid, the school handed out laptops for them to use that they brought home, and continued to use even after the Covid stuff had stopped. And their behavior got them in trouble constantly with us. They would sneak and use them while we were sleeping, or hide it if they heard us coming. There were little to no restrictions on what websites they could go to with the school laptops either. It got to the point where I would confiscate them every day after they got off the bus and kept them locked in my bedroom (where they are not allowed to go). It was such a relief when school let out for the summer a couple of weeks ago, and they had to hand them back in. None of that stuff (smart phones, laptops, tablets, etc) should be used in school. Only the teacher should have access to it (unless of course, it's a computer oriented class). The students should not be allowed to use or bring in smart phones, tablets, or laptops. Period. Need to call home? There's a phone in the School's Office. Ask if you can call home. 🤦‍♂️

I subbed at a high school while working on my credential this past year and I knew it would be tough but it was absolutely insane…. I am actually reconsidering my career choice. The freshmen were on a whole new level…Even at the “good schools” The blatant disrespect and profanity is disturbing. The way the kids talk is absolutely crazy and when you try to correct them they are so mean. When I went to high school kids were not allowed to talk like that in class. The cell phones are a MAJOR distraction and disruption. The kids just use their cell phones to stay in a constant tik tok loop, watch Netflix, play games, cheat or take pics of the answers. There is no integrity anymore. Numerous times I had students straight up put on inappropriate videos or sounds in my presence. One girl wanted to fight me. It was so stressful. A really awesome English teacher I subbed a lot for told me that after 28 years she’s leaving because she can’t do it anymore. This year did it in for her. All the good ones are leaving. Sad 😔

I hate to say this, but if there is another career path that interests you and can provide you a stable living, pursue it instead. I have a feeling this problem is going to continue to get worse before it gets better. And with the way teachers are quitting, you might end up the one competent teacher in a grade or even an entire school because all the decent teachers have quit or retired. With a room full of kids who have zero respect for you and no concept of what it means to follow rules. And an administration that will not back you up or assist you, but won't hesitate to criticize you. There are better jobs, friend. Go somewhere where you will be safe and well treated. And, hopefully, better paid.

And the student was not given any discipline at all. The students know there are no consequences, so the behavior spirals.

I am a substitute teacher who once wanted to be a full time assistant teacher or paraprofessional. I had always advocated for having two teachers PER CLASSROOM! It can get exhausting and even frustrating to work as a team, imagine how it is alone. Now I advocate and support teachers leaving. I USE TO aspire to be a teacher myself, but over the last five years it has gotten worse over the disrespect and the entitlement parents have over their children and don't even get me started on the passive-aggressive, gaslighting that goes on with administrators and other higher-ups. The system is overrun with uncompassionate, narcissistic, and sociopathic individuals who are queit quitters themselves.... who care not for the academic advancement and progress... and I want no part of it anymore. What makes this so amusing to me, that now I laugh at this, is that once I quite quit and show no interest is when schools are punishing teacherless classes onto me. They're using subtle tactics to try to get me to be a full-time teacher in the worse classrooms. I wish them all the luck in the world, because I had already made up my mind that if I'm going to deal with sociopaths I might as well work for Wall Street and earn four times more. This is the same across the country. I graduated in just 2014 and I can’t believe how in that short of time, the high school has changed. No one is held accountable for anything. A family friend of mine works in the cafeteria at the school and had her car keyed by two students and were caught on camera. The school refused to do anything to hold them accountable. When I went to school there, a minor detention you could get was having to wipe down lunch tables the last 5-10 min of lunch. They have now removed that punishment because it’s, “public shaming”.

Gwinnett schools on the average are considered under poverty level schools. My son's counselor physically would hide so she would not have to deal with students. This was not for a problem it was just to check on what to do next for graduation. Once the counselor realized my son was going to enlist in the military all attention was on but only because the recruiter was actively making sure he graduated without issues. My son is now in the service. I feel sad for all those teachers whom are put on the spot because literally no one is being held accountable. As students advance toward graduation schools appear to put less effort in holding them accountable. Accountability begins with the students. They are receiving a message that all boundaries can be broken/passed over and that they will pass anyway. The pandemic put stress on all those whom we grew accustomed to help with our children's development. Unfortunately, it appears that students have not realized changes are meant to help us grow and mature. Teachers are their visual example of what a future employer or supervisor would be like. Like the old song says " ...You're going to have to serve somebody!" So, while in school know your rights and know your boundaries;and learn to balance both.

I just finished my 37th year as a high school teacher. Everything he says is spot-on. We are forced to keep bad kids in the classroom. At my school, the percent of students of a given skin color who get suspended cannot exceed that group's percent of the student population. (Isn't establishing such a quota racist on its face?) Also, kids who are labeled Special Ed cannot be removed. Until school systems get the courage to 'throw the bumbs out', no matter what color or academic level students are, good teachers will continue to leave. Also, yes, the cell phone usage is off the charts. Administrators say they really don't have any leverage against kids who are constantly on them. Next thing you know, 'Johnny' says, "this stuff, (subject-matter), is just too hard". (I usually responded by asking 'Johnny', "how do you know--you didn't pay attention to the lesson".) Yes, a no cell phone policy coming from 'the top' is imperative.

Accountability is nonexistent. Teacher is public enemy number one. The expectations are off the chart. I wish I knew how much longer I could last. They destroy bathrooms. They had trouble with couples going in bathrooms because they decided to put “non binary” bathrooms in the school. Part of it also seems to be not enough people to supervise.

Both my parents have been teachers for a very long time in Texas and they constantly have have to deal with these types of problems. There's a massive disconnect between teachers and their higher-ups that leads to a lot of unrealistic demand. There's a lot of power that has been stripped from teachers and given to parents and idiotic administration.

I left teaching eight years ago after I refused to allow cellphones in my classroom. Administrators looked at me as if I had grown a second head. Learning requires focus, effort, and a positive attitude. We don't value these qualities in schools. We value technology more than academics. Kids with Chromebooks do not create better kids.

You basically have to be a correctional officer to teach these kids. I was a correctional officer in texas and now i substitute teach in high schools, jr high and elementary. If it wasn't for correctional experience i probably would have quit my sub job.

Some kids (like mine) don't have phones while high school age. What for? For others leaving smartphones in a box every school morning is nothing special. Private religious school. Zero problems. Parents actively keep an eye on their kids. So why do we need public schools?

Kids with chromebooks create kids that understand how to properly research on internet databases. Otherwise, rich kids would know how to do such things and write research papers, while kids whose families could not afford chromebooks would not be able to teach their child how to properly research online databases. When you're in a class, you're supposed to pay attention to what the teacher is teaching and take notes. The teacher might give you homework or assigned readings. When you get home, you can use your chromebook or your phone to do the research, but not in class while the teacher is teaching. Kids are a lot more susceptible to distractions. When you're in college, you're allowed to do pretty much whatever you want because at that point you're a grown adult, and if you fail the class, it is your problem. High school and lower are not the same.

You see the problem aren’t the students, It’s the administration letting students behave so inappropriately without proper discipline and counseling. I go to high school and the “School Rules” are completely ignored by the administrators unless they are forced to deal with it.

It all begins in the home and unfortunately many kids aren't provided the structure that instills respect for others and even oneself. One day I went to pick up my 4th grader at the school office. A girl came stomping into the office exclaiming that she was angry bc the teacher raised her voice at the students in class telling them to be quiet and calm down. Instead of telling the girl to march her butt back to class they told her "come in my office and tell me about it". Really angered me bc I'll be the teacher got spoken to about it.

I love learning and mentoring kids of all ages. In 2014, I was really considering teaching after I left the military and decided to sub to get my feet wet before spending the money to get the degree. I subbed for 4 years and was a no BS sub. I held the students as accountable as was possible in my capacity. I was sought after by the teachers because I gave a damn. I was even awarded sub of the year in the district I worked in most. The students liked me because in holding them accountable they saw that I cared about their future. I decided not to become a teacher because I could see the train coming down the tracks. Everything that was outlined and more was appareny clear even then and i cannot even fathom how much worse its gotten since covid. Very sad state of affairs.

Teachers caused this by supporting violent blm riots and bullying students into masking. They isolated these kids for 2 years which leads to developmental and behavioral problems. They taught apathy and violence for 2 years. That's is why.

I got "a talking to" by my principal, because a parent got upset at the way I was speaking to the kids. These were my words ( the same words I use every year, and I will continue to use them regardless of the talking to that I got!) : "You need to care more about yourself, even if you have no one else to care for you. You need to try your best in my classroom. My job is to teach you how to read, write, do math, and be a good human. My job is not to babysit you. My job is not to do your jobs for you. I ain't your mama. Your mama doesn't wipe your butt for you anymore; you do it yourself. Your mama is not in this classroom, so you have to do things for yourself. You have a job to do in this classroom. Your job is to treat me, your peers, yourself, and your school with kindness and respect. Your job is to try your best to learn everything that I will be teaching you this school year. These things will be hard to learn. I am going to stretch your brain to its limit. You should be going home with a headache, at the end of my class time. Your brain should be tired from all of the work that I will be asking it to do. Your brain is a muscle, and if you want it to grow, you have to use it. Just like your other muscles on your body. If you don't use them, you become weak. If you don't use your brain, you become stupid. If you become stupid, you will not get a good job to supply for yourself and your family. If you can't read, write, do math, and treat others with respect you will fail at this. Failing means that you may find yourself homeless or in jail. If you don't believe me, check out the news. I am sure all of those people who ended up in jail did not say that they wanted to be in jail when they grew up, when they were 8 years old. Make goals for your life and then work hard to get them, because I don't want to see your face on the news. I only want to see you on the news for something good like: being the first person to cure cancer, being the first person to invent something awesome, or being the first person to improve this world. Now let's begin...." AND EVERY YEAR, I GET THE BEST OUT OF THESE KIDS. I HAVE A FEW WHO JUST DON'T GIVE A DAMN, BUT THEY ARE THE EXCEPTION. EVERY YEAR I HAVE A FEW PARENTS WHO REMOVE THEIR KIDS FROM MY CLASSROOM, BUT SEE THE RESULTS OF THAT DECISION AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR WHEN GRADES COME IN AND WHEN THEIR KID HAS LITTLE RESPECT.....I have thought about leaving the profession too many times, in the last few years. The parents, administration, and government are the reasons I have these thoughts. It is NEVER the kids. The kids are the ONLY reason I stay, and even that may not be enough anymore! I sure hope people wake up, or America is going to suffer even more than it already is! Lord help us all!!

Before law school I tried substitute teaching around Nashville in the early nineties. I couldn’t be a teacher. It’s ten times harder and more stressful than being a litigator - which is in itself no walk in the park. I suppose that it’s far more difficult now. Godspeed you teachers.
