What at first glance seems to be a simple tongue-in-cheek scenario about applying to jobs without the proper qualifications is revealed to be an insightful satire of modern job hunting, and a scathing indictment of the inhumanity of that process. In the first 15 seconds of the video, Gwyneth encapsulates the crux of the issue: the disconnect between passion and livelihood. "I'm not one of the ones that makes money," she says, highlighting the inability of her chosen outlet for creative expression (KZbin) to provide enough income to survive in a civilization that fails to provide a solid launch pad to its citizens. A civilization that prioritizes wealth and endless toil over well-being, creative expression, and self-actualization. That's for after you retire, we're told; free time for creative expression is only for old, rich, and/or lucky people. As a result, the creative soul is forced not only to go out in search of a job that they simply do not want, but also to jump through hoops like show dog. First, with the resume. A reduction of the personality and soul of the individual to a static, one or two page object that's to be approved of or (in most cases) discarded, often without so much as a basic response, much less a reciprocal acknowledgement that shows respect for the effort that the individual put into the application process. This is particularly dispiriting, because one can easily spend hours filling out applications and taking personality assessments when applying to jobs, only for it to be ignored altogether. Gwyneth responds to the inhumanity of the resume by putting as much effort and seriousness into hers as the typical employer puts into respecting the humanity of most of their applicants. We're then given further insight into the bleak reality of the resume. "Don't tell who you are, tell who you could become." Because who you are is never enough, and all that matters is how useful you are as a warm body used to fill a role you never wanted in the first place. The same idea is then extended to the concept of the "cover letter." The rest of the video shows Gwyneth responding to various job postings with a mix of unashamed truthfulness, transparency, and humor that demonstrates who she is as a person. Of course, the obvious implication here is she's not going to get the job (or even a response), because employers don't care about who you are. Rather, they care about how well you LIE about who you are, and how convincingly you can distort the representation of yourself to appear as a good fit for the position. Gwyneth ends her subtle mockery by applying to the most dehumanizing of all positions: the military. Going so far in her mockery as to not even get the branch correct in her email. "Are you a broke loser?", the ad subtextually asks, "Then how about risking your life fighting a the state that doesn't give a damn about you? You even get to pretend to be doing something meaningful with your life." The ad doesn't even PRETEND to play up the patriotism bit. No, they know exactly who their target audience is and what they believe about themselves and the world. By the end of it, we're left rooting for the character that is Gwyneth. Hoping that her story ends in success, in doing what she loves, and that she finds enough time and energy to practice her skills as a humorist. And in reflection, we're left questioning our own life choices up to this point, and the sacrifices we've had to make at the expense of our true desires. Is it really worth it? What actually makes us happy? And what changes can we make to shift the external reality of our lives to be more in line with our internal vision of who we are? Fear not, for the answers to these questions will reveal themselves in time, but only to those who have the courage to question in the first place. Thanks Gwyneth. You've given me a lot to think about, and have earned yourself a subscriber.
