Thank you so much for posting this! I've always enjoyed watching gymnastics, but usually in the "it's the most fun to watch during the summer Olympics" sort of way. I've been sick and stuck in bed for a week, and I went on a bit of a youtube binge. I've watched dozens of gymnastics videos now and was starting to pick up some of the lingo, but I still had no idea how scores and points work. Your explanation was incredibly helpful and I feel like my knowledge of the sport - and thus my enjoyment while watching - just shot forward. (And I only had to rewind once to puzzle out what you meant. :P) Thanks a bunch for posting!

Fantastic video! I happen to be completely clueless when it comes to gymnastics, and I can tell you that even your simple walkthrough of the rules and scoring system was hard to follow entirely. But it sure made it a lot easier to comprehend the sport, and I'll enjoy the information when I get to watch an event following this experience. Cheers!

Awesome video explaining to people how the sport works but I just want to correct you - you can't get 0.5 deductions on steps no matter how large they are (only 0.1 and 0.3)... hopefully no judges are taking 0.5 deductions on your steps cause they're not allowed lol. Also huge congratulations on your European Title and the Olympic medal!

What if you invent a new move? Does new skills get added to the "skill point book" at any time?
@NileWilsonGymnast7 жыл бұрын
Nope you have to compete it on the world stage at a major championships - at world championships or Olympics - in order have it put into the code of points!
@jeverbever7 жыл бұрын
So just to make sure I get it right - If you have come up with a legit new move, and then use it in a major competition, a set of judges (and whoever else takes care of it) will evaluate it and allocate an appropriate amount of points to it? Thanks for responding, Nile. I discovered you two days ago and have been watching tons of your videos while doing my own stretching and training since then :)

So for all you reining horse folks out there here's an explanation in your words: Reining patterns start at an average of 70. All horses start at a 70 the moment they walk in the arena. This score of 70 is kind of comparable to the difficulty score, except in gymnastics it isn't a 70 across the board, they actually take into consideration and specialize each starting score to the contestant based on what moves are performed. Let's say we give a horse a starting score of 5.5 for a sliding stop, a rollback, and two spins. Now, for the execution score, everyone starts at a 10 when they step on the apparatus, just like the average score 70. As a reigner moves through a pattern, they are added or deducted based on execution from -1.5 to +1.5 (It sounds like gymnasts only go down). Let's say our reigner overspun by an eighth. He will be deducted -.5, so his execution score is now 9.5. He doesn't do anything else in the pattern wrong, so his execution score is still 9.5 when he exits. To get his final score, we take the starting score of 5.5, and add it to the execution score of 9.5, and get a final score of 15.

@trycethomas9397 жыл бұрын
Lol you could totally compete in you wanted to. You would have to put in the work for probably about 3 years, but people in gymnastics compete at a high level into their 30's. So absolutely it's possible.

So what happens when someone comes up with a new move, does it get added to the book?
@NileWilsonGymnast8 жыл бұрын
+Nick B Yes, I believe a gymnast has to compete his new move at World level competitions & it gets submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation. Basically They then accept it & give it a difficulty value in the code of points.

I can now watch gymnastics with a better insight. I understood that 15 was good but never knew difficulty and execution was decided by different judges.
