Jason Weigandt speaks on why Multi time champ Ryan Villopoto retired so early and why we never saw his real personality that he shows now.
Jason Weigandt is for me the voice of Motocross. For 2024 he finally gets his chance to step into the booth during Supercross, and it makes an epic season just that touch bit sweeter. I planned to get a lot into Weige's back story, tell some stories from his 20+ year career, but that is going to have to wait for the next one! We spent 4 hours solving all of the real and imaginary problems of Supercross and it was unreal.

Weege's dad worked for Bel Ray in New Jersey and was taking Weege to the races at Englishtown when he was a little kid. Weege was a flagger at Englishtown when he was growing up. He's been around the sport his whole life

Because being a professional you have to take life more serious. So when Ryan retired he could relax and be himself without all the pressure to be successful and having to train so hard to become successful. That’s why you see changes in there personality.💯✌️🤙🇺🇸✊🙏

Weege is “ pure Gold”. Now all we need to grow this sport is get him someone in the booth that compliments him appropriately so the broadcasts aren’t unbearable when he isn’t talking. On that point. We are also lucky that Jase has come on like gang busters and we have him on this platform and is finally showing up at press conferences because his questions and insights are outstanding

Supercross seems so tough on the body that it would make sense from a safety and longevity standpoint to allow each racer to skip two races without penalty. If there are 17 races, each rider would only be judged on their best 15.

I agree with your sentiment. Several issues if guys skip races. Problem 1 fans don't get to see their favorite rider or riders at 2 events. Easy to dismiss but would cause significant heartburn. Problem 2 sponsors lose exposure and therefore value when their guys aren't out there. Problem 3 it would likely alter the points picture in unexpected ways. Imagine every top 5 guy opts out of the same race. A bunch of guys are getting points they normally wouldn't. We could keep going. I do like throwing out your 2 worst scores just not sure how to handle all of the consequences.

Totally agree. I'm a die-hard Dungey fan. I've been pulling for this kid since his rookie 250 season. And I think he retired after his last Supercross title, which Eli threw away in New Jersey. Dungey felt like there was no way I'm winning next season.

He was retiring before the supercross season began, he wasn't even going to race at all but got convinced to do so by his inner circle.. he was done with outdoors at that point aswell, when he brokd his neck (finished the race) and how close it was to causing a major life changing injury, that changed him mentally, especially at that age.. but he most definitely could have won the following year against Anderson, no doubt in my mind.

Rv2 is my all time favorite. I'm 45 I've seen many epic riders. Rv has a sad story but smiles all day long now

There's a massive underappreciation for how difficult this sport is at the highest level of the premier class. Gotta check every box that you are literally world class. Physical, mental, riding skills, determination, others I can't think of. Skip a box and you don't podium - ever.

erm, no if anything, social media gives people a channel of their own. Brands dont want to get into hot water, always was like that, and probably always will be. Although the guys here say, no team is restricting their riders, it is well understood by anyone that you simply dont want to risk it because at the end of the day, riders being sponsored means they are representing the brand. Unless the brands is metal mulisha, you wanna keep it clean

Enjoyed the video. Villopoto does seem like a really cool guy, Carson Brown has some great videos of him racing Ryan on obsolete old crates. Clearly Villopoto is a good sport, as he raced Brown on a WR500. I owned one of those evil things way back when and was amazed how those two flung that beast around the track. Regarding the criticism mentioned in the video that anyone who puts themselves out there draws, a timeless statement made by Theodore Roosevelt from way back in 1910 is still more relevant than ever in today's connected world: "It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.” It is good to be reminded of this fact in this time of social media with an abundance of stupid negative 2nd guessing and just plain caustic shit being spouted by keyboard warriors. It is not "PC" to say in this in our easily offended wanting to be all inclusive world, but not every opinion has weight. The source must be considered, and most of the opinions spouted by the legion of lame people online are not worth the bandwidth they take up on the Internet. I suspect Theo would agree 😆

Let's partly blame the broadcast last 3 + years they follow the winner of track when they're still racing going on whether it's a heat race or the main keep cameras on the race for at least the top 10 to cross the finish line

look at the flak Eli is catching for this season. In this sport if you were winning and now you aint, youve fallen off and are below everyone youve previously beaten. Its a bizzare fanbase for sure!!!

Gotta love riding and racing more than winning. Winning is fun but riding is more fun. For guys like Mike Brown its all about riding. He loves to win don't get me wrong, but he likes riding and racing more.

I would really like to see the SX tracks become a little wider and easier-for closer racing across a broader skill-level. This business of building tracks so tricky that only the best or bravest riders can tackle them, is not only dangerous, but too limiting on close racing among a broader group of riders.

The current points system sucks, it leads to situations like this. There needs to be more of a split for winning, That would keep people wanting to win. It would also keep the fastest person from loosing over a bad night, while also motivating the 4-8th place guys to race harder.

The not riding every week idea is interesting. One of the biggest issues this sport has is the lack of competitiveness each race. When we get lead changes throughout the race it's rare. First place laps 10th place. Fifth place is 30 seconds behind the lead. I'm not sure why that is exactly, but if it stays that way we need some competition inside the competition. Perhaps a separate category and money for privateers. Or a bigger emphasis on team points. Something that makes the rest of the field who didn't podium relevant.

No such thing as bad publicity.... There is nothing wrong with making a wrong choice or decision.... Own it and change it or say we like it this way.... also these riders were pounded in their head in the Crusty days to not be like them and they became robots.... I watched it from the inside..... Make sure you say EVERY sponsor, do not bad mouth anything.... many were fined on the team side for not saying my Rockstar, yada yada yada....

Villopoto got burnt out. Every race on the podium he was just a corporate shill. He absolutely hated being that corporate shill. Same basic speech every time. I do not think for one second he would have figured it out at 30. He was just miserable.
