The way you guys are describing the cone valves is exactly how I feel about the first time I got my stock suspension set up for my weight/ability (I am a hefty boy). My bike finally reacted to terrain and obstacles exactly as I expected it should, and it made me exponentially more confident, significantly more safe, and faster enough to move up a race class. I always tell people to fat suspension work done before doing any engine performance mods. The best suspension work you can afford will always make you faster than engine work will.

So much truth in this video! Of course budget and priorities control a lot of our purchasing decisions but the excuse of “I’m not a pro, so the better equipment doesn’t matter” WILL eventually injure you in MX. I used that excuse in racing, golf and even softball. I raced for 5 years at 215 lbs on STOCK suspension (not even springs). I always thought “I will just learn how to ride the bike however it is set up”, that “I will just adapt to the bike”. It finally took me seeing a still photograph of myself over jumping a double, flat landing with both tires buried into the fenders, case/pegs/boots on the ground; which resulted in a broken ankle, broken wrist, complete rupture of my Achilles’ tendon, and a snapped upper shock bolt. After this incident I changed my mentality, not only on my bike equipment, but with my golf clubs and softball bat. INSTANT improvement in all of my sports!

I didnt understand Jase’s characterization of the cone valves. Did he say bumps felt worse than he expected them to be? I did a set of the Xplor Pro forks on my 300. They have to be set up for you, like any other suspension. I was shocked how good mine were on small bumps, chop, and rock gardens(i ride off road only). I would see a bump, anticipate what it should feel like in my mind, then running over it would would be much smoother than I had anticipated.

@SreidMX4 жыл бұрын
I think the key takeaway here should be that suspension is not a one size fits all proposition, setup for you is priority. A kits not including the cone valve are usually more rigid, have special anti friction coatings and higher flow pistons than the oem stuff. But both setup the same the A kit stuff would have a plusher feel and likely have more bottoming resistance. Just food for thought. Stock stuff can be made to work 90% as well much cheaper than the AKit..

Cone valve forks are only like $3400 with Jeff's discount. I get the same being a dealer. Not really crazy expensive. The shocks on my race car cost $15,000.

You guys nailed it by saying it's about safety. They really do save you on a few of those mistakes or pucker ups that come along with racing when pushing it. It's crazy that cone valves are so expensive since there are less parts and easier to manufacture but that being said the cone valves and the KYB conversion kits are by far the best options to run. I have owned both sets and never bought new just always scored a used set that's half the price but I always end up spending money on having them set up for me.

Would you say KYB spring conversion or Cone valve is a better choice?
@joethomas96344 жыл бұрын
@@Quadz10 That's a tuff one because I sold my KYB converted forks and wish I would have kept them. I had my KYB's set up for off road and my cone valve set up for track. What these guys are talking about that works so well with the cone valve forks is not only the get ability to fine tune them into the track and riding conditions but they also have a preload spring adjustment on both legs that allow you to adjust the forks so they sit up higher in the stroke so they don't dive on you when braking or allow you to let them settle in more when needed. Plus when valve to your riding you can feel a way better response when over shooting landings or hitting big G outs. Definitely confidence inspiring. Both sets are really good so I would just try and find some on Vital Mx forums to find a good deal.

Stock suspension isn't valved for A riders and Pro riders. That's why it feels so soft. Valving is the key to how suspension feels. Even WP Cone Valves can feel like crap if they are not set up properly for your type of riding and skill level. There's a huge misconception that buying A-kit instantly gives you awesome suspension, and that's simply not true. Perfectly valved stock components can feel better than improperly valved A-Kit. My RaceTech revalved AER48 fork and stock WP shock feel better than WP ConeValves i tried that weren't quite set up for me.

@@Xeil It all depends on what it's set up for originally. I've had some suspensions done and they were worse riding than factory or the previous set-up. I started taking apart suspensions and checking out what they changed. After a while I caught on. I now use Race tech parts and revalve my own. I've tried RG3 a few years ago. I just recently tried a very popular suspension tuner and liked my own valving better. I took all his stuff out and put my setup back in. I've noticed on really knarly hills in a race I can now close in on anyone suspension setup. But I haven't found the perfect setup for my forks yet. Suspension is very user specific. Suspension tuners is more like a one fix all set up. Unless you have your own full time suspension tuner you'll never have it absolutely perfect for you unless you learn to do it yourself.

Standard Cone Valve vs AER Cone Valve?
@yukonjon5964 Жыл бұрын
old school dampening cones that displaced oil in a progressive manor to reduce bottoming (hydraulic cylinders on heavy equipment have the same thing)... are not cone valves. cone valves replace a part of the shim pack valving. they offer actual valving control and are speed sensitive, but have the ability to shut down most of the oil flow instantly and thus greatly reduce fork bottoming.
@S0RELOSER Жыл бұрын
@@yukonjon5964 that doesnt answer my question.
@yukonjon5964 Жыл бұрын
@@S0RELOSER i see. you meant cone valve spring forks, vs cone valve AER forks. first we must decide between air forks (AER) and spring forks. average opinions are close to 50/50, with too many variables in riding conditions to give a clear answer. hard-enduro guys are less likely to go with AER. but now that we are adding cone valves to the topic, one needs to ask if cone valves are really the way to go considering the cost to set them up properly and keep them in top shape. here is a quote from a Vital-MX forum... "The fork requires service every 10 hours by a qualified tech or else they don't work very well. It cost about $200 to $600 to service them properly." one reason we see used forks for sale is that cone valves wear out relatively quickly. so its not just the purchase and set up cost, its the maintenance cost. yet if money were no issue most of us agree we would rather have cone valves. now for the tricky part. it so happens that cone valves fix many of the complaints we have with AER. mid-stroke action become much more versatile, thus the AER becomes nearly flawless in any condition (when set up for you properly by an expert tuner). so if you liked AER you will love the feel of cone valves. if you hated AER there is a good chance cone valve AER will win you over. but than, so will a cone-valved spring fork. cone valves fix the issue of initial plushness causing mid-stroke harshness, while still holding up when you need them to. either way, until riding style and terrain application are factored in, there is no sure answer for everyone, even if money were no object. lastly lets just be clear that only WP makes cone valves. so unless your on a Euro bike, the original question only applies if you want to put WP forks on a Japanese brand bike.

You can't compare the stock AER forks to cone valves and come up with, A kit is the way to go. They are 2 different forks, spring vs air. valved vs not valved. The stock stuff these day's isn't far off A kit, mainly coatings. It's all in the setup (dampening, springs etc). KYB and Showa are even more close (A kit to stock).
