To anyone thinking this is boring - you are right! This is called training 1 part 1, because it is the first video I ever made, of my first ever gyrocopter lesson. It's not meant to train other people. I learnt from this video I needed a cable so the radio could be recorded, and I got more aggressive on editing. If you look at newer videos on my channel you'll find some more interesting ones . I quite like the one of "S-turn into the numbers" and the video of my first solo flight. Happy flying! If you want to see the actual flying it starts at 13:03.

+tom thompson Ah I see. The camera is actually mounted on a chest harness, on me, so any shaking from that is actually me shaking. And if you are talking about the control column, then yes, that is physically connected to the gyrocopter rotor, an 8.5M piece of metal and composite spinning at over 300RPM. So unsurprisingly it does shake a bit, and there are an awful lot of lock wires on the connecting nuts and connections!

The GoPro probably has an omni-directional microphone element. Thus it picks up all or any sound around it. If there is a microphone input jack then if you used a directional microphone then it would pick up your vocals better. Sometimes background noises are annoying to people. I for one have a hearing loss. I only hear out of my right ear. The only way I could hear you speak at all is with an earphone. But your speech is being overpowered by the engine noise thus a directional microphone would eliminate some of that engine noise and then we could hear your comments better. 29+ years in retail electronic sales.

Spin up for take-off into the wind is about 10:45
@lawrencewillard63704 жыл бұрын
You should go 'back to an earlier time, where you started spinning the rotor by hand, then using whatever wind around to increase revs.. Then taxiing, etc, till nose lifts, push stick forward and accelerate . Very shortly you have lift off. This teaches how the gyro works.

Hi Nick! Very nice instruction video. Did rotate with 60kts? Very nice clear image from your Go Pro Hero 3! Nice flight. Thanks for sharing with us. Gilberto Mendes - - -
@nfortescue9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gilberto Freitas! You don't rotate exactly. The Gyro naturally goes into a wheel balance (wheely) without rotation, you have to put the stick forward to keep it there. It then lifts off on it's own accord. Again, this isn't at a particular airspeed, it's at a rotor speed. When the gyro lifts off, you put the nose down and fly level and low until you get 70kts airspeed before going into a climb

Question: Several years ago I wanted to purchase a gyrocopter similar to this one and I almost did but what stopped me from buying it was I heard that gyrocopters can go into an uncontrolled pilot induced porpoising oscillation and they will not come out of it or so I was told. Your opinion on this?
@nfortescue10 жыл бұрын
I'm only a trainee pilot, so someone more experienced might want to talk more. This web page is pretty god: www.gyrocopterschool.com/gyrocopter-autogyro-gyroplane/how-to-fly-gyros. There are two big dangers in Gyrocopters - Pilot induced oscillation (PIO) and Power Push Over (PPO). Two things make modern gyrocopters much safer than previous generation ones. The first is that the modern factory built ones like the Magni and Rotorsport gyros have better design to avoid this, bigger tailplanes for stabllity and better engine positioning. The second is that with tandem gyros pilots have more instructor training where you are taught to avoid both. So if you build then jump into a homebuilt it is still dangerous. But if you get proper instruction you can judge the safety for yourself. I'd say they are safer than light aircraft, which also have dangers (stall and spin), but no form of aviation is completely safe.
@phayzyre105210 жыл бұрын
Nick Fortescue Thanks Nick, that's good info! I'll be sure to check that website out also. When I do buy one I definitely would like an instructor to guide me at first. I've built and flown several experimental aircraft before but gyros are new to me. I know all to well that it's very unwise to build and then immediately jump in and fly an aircraft with little or no training; all to often I've seen people crash and get injured or much worse!

@nfortescue9 жыл бұрын
+Jason Ellis the squeeze lever on the stick is the pre-rotator, that connects the engine to the rotor to start it rotating. It isn't used in flight. The brakes and throttle are both operated with the left hand.

+Nick Fortescue Ah okay.. Do you still fly? And what is the top speed/range of that thing?
@nfortescue9 жыл бұрын
Jason Ellis Yes, I still fly. I should post some newer videos. I still haven't got my license, I've got the flying test coming up. VNE (speed to not exceed) is 100mph (but I think 110 in italy for the same aircraft): www.magnigyro.co.uk/index.php/m16. Cruising at 90 is pretty common. It's got 69 liters of usable fuel, and uses about 17l per hour, but realistically you probably wouldn't want to fly for much more than 3hrs without landing, so realistic range is probably about 300miles. It obviously depends a lot on the wind and weather conditions

How is this a gyrocopter if the rotor is powered? I thought the whole definition of a gyrocopter is that the rotor is unpowered?
@nfortescue9 жыл бұрын
Olen Soifer Good question! In flight, the engine is disconnected from the rotor. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be a gyrocopter, and it would also be really dangerous in the event of engine failure. But gyrocopter pilots got fed up of starting the rotor spinning by hand - we are lazy! So something was invented called a "pre-rotator". It starts the rotor spinning on the ground (not enough to fly though). You then release it and take off as normal. www.gyroplanepassion.com/Prerotator.html

@nickcrownshaw10 жыл бұрын
was it my imagination or were you still spinning up the rotors with the stick back, if so not a very safe technique.
@nfortescue10 жыл бұрын
Correct pre-rotate sequence in the Magni is to prerotate to at least 130 rpm with stick fully back. At this point you have enough blade lift to be safe, and bring the stick fully forward for the final prerotate before takeoff. This will vary for other types.
@nickcrownshaw10 жыл бұрын
I've got a mt-03 and wouldn't use that technique, but if it's safe for a magni then fair enough, I still think in gusty conditions it's risky
@nfortescue10 жыл бұрын
Nick Crownshaw OK. I think we can both agree that KZbin comments aren't the best place to make safe flying decisions. I'll stick with what my instructor says, but mention your comment to him. He's type qualified on Magni and mto3. Obviously you should make your own decision after you do a type conversion.

Thanks again for you comment Nick. Reading it made me do a bit more reading around pre-rotator systems, and I found this article which has some interesting technical details around the Magni one: www.magnigyro.com/features/THE%20%20MAGNI%20%20DIFFERENCE.pdf The pre-rotator bit starts on page 8, if you are interested.

Not all gyroplanes are Gyrocopters. "Gyrocopter" is a registered trade name for the gyroplane designs of Igor Bensen and should not be used for other brands.
@nfortescue7 жыл бұрын
Actually, not true anymore. The trademark is expired: www.trademarkia.com/gyrocopter-73244934.html. And Gyrocopter is commonly used as a name for all Autogyros/Gyroplanes in the UK. Eg: gyrocopterexperience.com/ run by Phil Harwood, one of the driving forces behind making Gyros popular in the UK, and they commonly train on Magnis and Autogyro. Might be true in the US, but English is a dynamic language. See gyrocopterexperience.com/faqs/107-whats-the-difference-between-a-gyroplane-an-autogyro-and-a-gyrocopter.
@seikibrian86417 жыл бұрын
It's "common" to call all facial tissues "Kleenex" and all adhesive bandages "Band-aids." That doesn't make it correct.
@nfortescue7 жыл бұрын
I'd let this go (who argues about this stuff on youtube) but I'm a bit of a language geek. I'm curious what would make it correct in your view? Maybe a usage in print from 1915, before Igor Bensen was born (yes, this exists)? Or maybe a definition in the Oxford English dictionary (yes this exists)? Maybe court recognition that some trademarks have become generic, and so trademarks become the correct word for something, because English is a dynamic language: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarks . I think for almost any definition of "correct" you come up with I could show this was correct usage of "gyrocopter", especially for UK English.
@seikibrian86417 жыл бұрын
"I'm curious what would make it correct in your view?" Nothing would make it correct. "Gyroplane," "autogyro," "autogiro," etc. are perfectly good words, and calling them all "gyrocopters" is intellectual laziness.

JUst started looking into gyrocopters. I'm confused. I thought wind speed caused the rotors to rotate. But on your video they are turning before your vehicle begins moving. Is this a different design I'm seeing?
@nfortescue9 жыл бұрын
Most modern gyrocopters have a pre-rotator. This briefly connects the engine to the rotor to start it spinning. You then disconnect it before take off, and while in flight it is just the air going through it that spins the rotor.

Try something to clip the extreme highs. This was a problem with moving pictures in the beginning. Crinkling paper did it so bad that they wet the paper. Look at an old Marx bros film. It may be where the mic is mounted is near a noise source.
