I've got a pair of Trickers single monk brogues, blind stitched with the dovetailed heel. (again, second hand - as all my shoes are). I'm a UK 10 in a G width and they are on the generous side fit-wise. Very comfortable though. I can put the strap round to reduce the 'swim'. I have to say, they are among the most comfortable shoes I own! Mine are a similar tan colour. Good country shoes. Good to see the oxfords are nice too. Tony

Thanks Tony. A shoemaker recently told me my right foot is a G... but not my left... so it’s probably that funky mix for me. In an ideal world we would all wear bespoke and have a money tree (or as my wife says Geldsheisser).

I gave them away. If the shoes are my size and they don’t fit I don’t return them.

Thanks for your comments. I have only one pair of Edward Green so it’s difficult for me to say. I think it depends on how you value your investment. Your top line EG (which I don’t have) are built to last forever and be a relatively neutral style and color which stands the rest of time. Everyone I know that has them, appreciated the style and detail of the finishing. The camp that doesn’t buy into EG from a value perspective either wants more style for the value (last, material and color) like a Gaziano & Girling or wants a hand welted product with a greater degree of flexibility too, like Saint Crispins or A Meccariello. For the conservative style, there is no doubt Edward Green is one of the best. Once you’re in the $1500 range in shoes you have many fine options available and can get bespoke quality materials and craftsmanship in a RTW, MTO or MTM product. In conclusion it really comes down to what you value. Hope that’s helpful.

Hi Wi Shoeguy, What shoe would you recommend I buy as a gift for my high school math teacher this Christmas? I completed my Master's degree and want to show my appreciation for his encouragement. I'm looking to spend between $400-600.

I would like it to be a pair of shoes that he would long to wear almost daily. It should be comfortable since he spends some of his time on his feet. I remember that he often wore navy chinos trousers, white or light blue shirt, and a tie.

What a generous gift! For school floors they can be pretty slick so I’d consider something with a rubber sole. In the price range you can do a custom shoe from TLB Mallorca, mainline, like the Owen I have posted before. Since he wears a light of light slacks, you could consider a light brown color or a burgundy. There are a number of choices for soles you can choose as well. As a gift, I’d opt to have them add “made especially for me. ...” in the shoes so your teacher would know you had them made just for him. In terms of style, you would best know whether your teacher likes loafers, oxfords, monks or derbies. All would be good options. Best wishes and congrats on graduating?

@@wishoeguy Yes I was thinking a pair of nice burgundy or oxblood oxfords. I'm not sure about light brown since he often wears navy trousers; those might be too bright. Great point about rubber soles for the slippery floors and the "made for" tag. I wish I could find out his shoe size without spoiling the surprise.
