I love how Brady occasional plays the devil's advocate to Grey in a way, since I too initially felt Grey's approach to a person complaining is to that of a snob who tries to play cool by finding emotion meaningless. But by Brady giving all these situation and context, Grey could give more clarity on his approach where he only feels that way to a specific group of people complaining and would take a different approach based on the context. (esp in Brady's hard drive story since it's easy to emphasize) Also, Grey and the reddit guy can both be right, because you both place a different value in the same thing. Person A pass by a street painter and feel that his painting is worthless, person B finds the very same painting worthy of a million of his dollar. The painting right now is both worthless and priceless at the same time, the value of a family name is the same, it is relative and therefore is both worthless and priceless. Grey is the man with the points but Brady adds so much substance to the cast, kudos to the two.

I've never made a comment on a KZbin Video before (that I can remember) and I'm sure I'm just shouting in to a room and then closing the door, but I wanted to say: The closing discussion of this video really touched me. I don't take a side to either Brady or Grey, I think they both made valid points. But I do want to say that the conversation touched me, particularly the long pause towards the end. Those are magical moments in life. I'm reminded of a novel called Dragon's Egg by Robert L. Forward. There's a scene in this book where this alien hyper-sentient AI, which has been severed from itself for many years, is suddenly confronted while trying to infiltrate a system secured by its old self. It's left contemplating the situation, completely stymied, unable to know how to react.

I like comic sans for one reason. I'm dyslexic, and some fonts are much easier to read than others. and comic sans is so much easier to read than many others. then again I agree that it shouldn't be used for all things but it's the second easiest font for me to read, first being this fond I found called dyslexie witch is just so good I can sort of feel the difference of be focusing on what the words mean rather what they are. the only thing I don't like so much about dislexie is that you have to pay to put it on multiple computers. but still a download for a single computer is free and you can get a free thing for your web browser that works... semi well that changes all the fonts to that
@ProfAwesomeO10 жыл бұрын
I should note, that comic neue is not as good as comic sans for dyslexia due to the fact that one of the things that helps is all the letters looking quite different and not reflections or rotations of each other and comic neue takes some of that away from a font

No. Someone can show humility in the face of such rapturous applause. But that doesn’t mean that the applause humbles them. Humbling someone is rendering someone human after they’ve acted as if they’re a god. The reason you think it appropriate is entirely because of how frequently you hear people say this

The name thing... I'm in the middle. Because I can understand wanting to pass on the name. BUT, his daughters can pass on his name. It's not written in stone that women need to take their partners name, or that the children don't get her name. I'm never giving up my name, because I have sentimental feelings towards my surname, and I am proud of my family heritage. So I think what Grey is pointing out, about names, is that it is a social construct we've created, so if you want to be nihilist about it, then yeah, names don't matter. But why do we still use them? Why are people so sentimental about their names?

Hey Grey, I'm an audiobook narrator, and you should look into the effects (specifically pitch, tempo, and noise cleaning) on Audacity to make an added line fit in with the rest of your sound track. I find it odd people comment on videos without reading comments. I always read the entire first page of comments before adding anything, if anything you can find yourself corrected in a comment chain and avoid misinforming someone plus you can get some cool information from someone else which you'd never have known without the few minutes of reading. Given the number of comments on most videos of course you can't read them all but at least the first page seems to be a common courtesy to the creator who might get alerted or to the people who do read them (who don't want to read the same thing over and over).

I'm completely on-board with Grey's idea about language education. I think learning sign language was a good idea for a half year period. When it comes to the point about English in non-english speaking countries, i think it can be cut back, but not cut out completely, without any degradation to the quality of learning, as long as the kids have access to some English television or internet in their primary school years. They will always learn more outside of class, as long as there is access to it.

Here's how to make Brady's data loss analogy work: You've lost all your data, and then someone who assigns no emotional value to their data walks up and tries to convince you that you shouldn't care the data is gone. It doesn't matter if that person is right or not, you're still going to get mad at them for trying to convince you not to be sad because it doesn't matter. I know Grey would just argue back, and perhaps this reddit person didn't have a full Grey-worthy argument prepared for why a name holds value, but who would? That just means he either wasn't as prepared or isn't as good at debating as Grey, it doesn't mean he's wrong to assign value to a name.

The thing with a name is that it is your ID in history. I remember looking up how far my family went up the tree, and looking at the oldest records of my name, and seeing whether they are the same tree. Except that's only a very limited spectrum of my ancestors. Say my grandma was last of her name, that means that no kid will ever look at her tree ever again. She, and all of her ancestors, are part of the void as a result of not name not being a thing anymore.

Funny thing about the analogy with Amazon's dumb marketing strategy, comparing it to a movie trailer that doesn't tell you what the movie is: that's actually exactly what the trailer for Miracle on 34th Street did. Go check it out, it's utterly amazing. Not only does it not mention Christmas or Santa, it doesn't say a SINGLE WORD about the film. Actually the several articles I've read about the topic claim that BEING bilingual may delay onset of Alzheimers. That means having been raised with two languages AS A KID, not learning a new language at age 20, 50, 70 or whatever.
@MrRayne91110 жыл бұрын
But you can be bilingual when youre thirty as well... My parents are bilingual from the age of thirty. By the way what about tri-lingual people? I hope it gives me more advantages than being able to write comments on youtube..

The Heretic Sure, but what CGP seemed to imply was that learning a language AT OLD AGE delayed the onset of dementia, but that you might as well do any other brain activity and the result would be the same. What the studies I've found actually say is that BEING bilingual delays Alzheimers. That's not the same thing at all.
@Grabehn4210 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is that mental deterioration still happens, I know several people that have said more than once "they say mental exercise/knowledge/languages delay Alzheimer's, my Mom/dad/aunt/uncle still got it." As with pretty much every other thing, some people seem to get it earlier, other's later and other don't get it at all.
