I shot with this gun in the german army. It has almost no recoil, and that bullet is so tiny you think it cant do any damage. But its velocity is very high so it can penetrate bullet proof vests and glass. But the charging handle is so loose you think it falls apart the next moment...

The MP7 is extremely compact, has a 40 round magazine, a huge firing rate at a whopping 950 rpm, and a low recoil. To your point about the 4,6mm : This round is a balance between high penetration even against body armor and good effect on target. It actually tumbles less than a 9mm round, but it wides once it penetrates a human body, causing much larger wounds and more severe injuries. Therefore it's damage output is pretty similar to 5,56mm NATO.

Felt like a glorified pistol to me. But seems to work. I liked it a lot! Hated the H&K416 we used when not assigned to a Leo, for being so heavy and cumbersome in comparison. Might basically be a glorified .17 HMR, but this pierces armor at 200m like nothing they said in the army. Not that I ever shot at anything but paper targets though.

The ammo is specifically designed to penetrate one layer of body armor, but not two, so that a round will go through the front of a body armor vest but will not punch through the back. It is meant to reduce collateral damage and it is a way to cause more damage with a small round, because the round will usually go through a guy twice after bouncing back from the body armor on his back or after bouncing from the inside of a steel/Kevlar helmet.

All Cartridges have pros and cons. 7.62x25mm doesn't make sense for a weapon design like the MP7 in terms of e.g. weapon size and accuracy (recoil). In case you didn't know about the 4.6x30mm, after penetrating body armor the bullet doesn't fly straight through the body, it some kind of "flips" (don't know English translation) and creates a relatively big wound canal. Sorry for bad English, I'm German.

I heard that some semi auto only MP7s and G36s were ordered by a LE distributor in Canada they ended up getting sold to some private citizens with restricted class permits totally legal but some people in Germany were not happy HK now require end user certificates for their LE weapons even if they are semi auto only.
@CenlaSelfDefenseConcepts8 жыл бұрын
***** yes the SL8 models are available but have to be built differently than the G36 the G36s I was talking about were exactly the same as the military and LE models just without full auto they are still classified as a military weapon by the german government
@Karsliyu6 жыл бұрын
Responding to a 1 year old post, but since the answer is missing, the current german semi auto version of the G36 is called HK243, it is civilian legal in Germany, which means it has to be build on a separate assembly line than the military guns and is missing the full-auto parts compatibility to the G36. The SL8 is based on older german laws somewhat similar to the current Californian ones, making it necessary to remove the pistol-grip from the design. (forgotten weapons has a great video on the SL8) These laws are no longer the case so the HK243 is OK to look like a G36.

It's recoil isn't easy to handle because of it's weakness, but because bolt and buttstock are behind one another in a straight line without a difference in altitude. So the recoil is headed exactly and only backwards. This construction can handle greater calibers aswell. If you compare this design to a MP5 for example, you can easily see the difference. Excuse my english please, I'm an ex drill instructor from Germany, so maybe this explanation didn't sound brilliant.
@gnoobl11 жыл бұрын
You are right. I expressed that wrong. What i was trying to conway was the rifle like feel and behavior of the 4.6x30 when shot. To me (subjective personal opinion) it felt much closer to G36 than to a MP5.

actually that was an exact problem Task Force Ranger had in Somalia, the m855 ammunition with its steel tip had a tendency to penetrate a little farther than xm193. This meant the round would go through the malnourished Somalis body before it did what the 5.56 was meant to, which was fragment and tumble causing a massive wound, instead it was just punching tiny holes in the bad guys
@ChucksSEADnDEAD12 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Had the idea when I saw it could be run on a piston system and that a 5.56 bolt is able to run it after opened up .010". Barrel could probably be similar to the Mini 30 (able to shoot .308 and .311 bullets) and 5.56 brass can be converted to Tokarev brass. Unfortunately I doubt it could ever go commercial without HK coming up with a reason to sue. Thanks for the discussion, have a good one!
@DeathAdder18712 жыл бұрын
The silencer doesn't affect the mechanical precision or accuracy of the gun. The problem is that if you're firing a rifle you will notice a POI shift. Now, I don't know a lot about it but my understanding is that the added mass on the barrel affects the harmonics and reduces recoil during dwell time. The MP7 wasn't meant for precise shooting, more for quick volume of fire at short/medium-short ranges. Also, it has a short barrel which makes it "stiffer" to harmonics.
@Gegit0512 жыл бұрын
One of the perks regarding the HK UCP/MP9 combination over the Five-seveN/P90, relating to ammunition, is that the HK products were meant to have interchangeable magazines. To my knowledge, anyway, you can't slap a fifty-round box into the Five-seveN(wouldn't that be a treat!).

I would feel VERY safe with a gun like this. This caliber, against unarmored or even light armored targets, can fuck you up really bad, not because of the caliber itself, but because of it´s high control, which can lead to closer shot patterns extremely fast. I wouldn´t like to have any hole in my torso, and I would even hate it more if I had 5 .17 inch holes in random places. That will put the threat down.

I haven't found another mainstream manufacturer(like HK, Colt, etc.), even those with solid histories as military contractors, offering products for this round. My personal belief stemming from that is that it is an FN proprietary round, and they are being very strict with licensing until the round is officially adopted by NATO(as Germany stopped that from happening).
@joash48012 жыл бұрын
the problem with the 9mm was that it didn't had enough piercing power like the 5.56 despite the fact that its a small round. the 4.6 on the other hand wasn't made for stopping, it was made for piercing. the 4.6 round can actually pierce through mil-spec helmets. with its low recoil and hood handling it might not be that hard to aim that high.

Mass times velocity is the equation that matters here. This bullet has good velocity, but relatively small mass. Bullet weights are measured in grains, and this one is only 24gr. For comparison, a .45 pistol has a bullet weight of 230gr or a 5.56mm rifle round is about 62gr. (There are 7000 grains in a pound)

It was said that the Thompson submachine gun would knock people down before they die. By the way, a lot of times soldiers simply can't make that perfect shot so they need a bigger caliber. It also has a psychological effect, because usually a soldier with a bigger gun does walk straighter. But it's still silly to argue about such things, because it's a personal defense weapon, not a combat rifle.
