The lyrics of this song are saying "Do not leave, my child, it is easier for us all to suffer together". This sentence really sums up the Estonian history in so many ways. The contrast of a quiet peaceful bedtime song for a child in contrast to what will possible happen to that child in the future.

Very Beautiful Melody and Voice, this estonian song...Can someone translate the message of this song? Otherwise, magnificent film, it got to my love of history and of the european nations and cultures....WW2 was much more than fighting between the "Allies" and the "Axis"....Many europeans fought for their independence and self-determination, and were forced to fight in many cases against their own compatriots.. Again, Congratulations to the makers of this film...!!

My attempt at translation. This is nowhere close to transferring the beauty in language that is used. As this makes me tear up. Don't you cry. Long before your birth. All the cries have been cried, dear child. Smile while you are still able. Still you fall asleep happily. Nothing earthly disturbs your mind and in your dreams you live in the beautiful land far away. When you open your eyes you will see a golden bird on your chest. Golden are his wings. Golden are the hairs on his head. If you have strength in your arms you reach for the brightness. The bird flies away from your chest to the edge of the room, golden bird. If there is any strength in your legs and you step toward towards brightness. The golden bird flies away from the edge of the room towards the edge of the forest. If you say to your mother "In the hands of god, mother. I will be lucky". Away flies over the sea forever the golden bird. "Don't go child. Don't cross the sea. It is easier to suffer together. Don't go child. Don't cross the sea. It is easier to suffer together. Don't go child. Don't cross the sea. It is easier to suffer together. Don't go child. Don't go child. Don't cross the sea. It is easier to suffer together."

"Don't cry, long before you were born, all cries have been cried for you, baby smile, you still may smile, you still fall asleep blissfully infirm, your mind isn't oppressed by earthly problems yet and in dream you are in beautiful distant land. When you open your eyes you see a golden bird on your chest, golden are hes wings, feathers, golden crest on his head, If you have strength in your arms, stretch them towards the shine, Flies away from your chest to the corner of a camber golden bird. If there's strength in your legs and you walk towards the shine flies away from the corner to the side on a forest the golden bird, If you say ''Goodbye Mom, I'm going to catch some luck'' Flies away for forever over sea the golden bird. Ref. Don't go little child, don't go over sea, it's easier for us to suffer together." Those are apparently the English lyrics, copy/pasted from a comment made on another video. Beautiful song indeed, even though I don't understand Estonian myself.

Even though it's been a long time, the story talks about the mothers children going to fight on both the German and the Soviet lines and dying there to win Estonia's freedom back. Basically Estonians had to fight other Estonians.

@@eero7779 Someone else translated it before, so I will paste their translation here (with some corrections). Original translation by plas - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6SWoXesgNqga80 Don't cry, long before you were born all cries had been cried for you baby smile, while you still can, Still you fall asleep blissfully infirm your mind isn't oppressed by earthly problems yet and in your dream you are in a beautiful distant land, When you open your eyes, you see a golden bird on your chest golden are his wings and feathers, with a golden crest upon his head, If there's strength in your arms and you stretch them towards the glitter the golden bird flies from your chest to the corner of the chamber, If there's strength in your legs and you walk towards the glitter the golden bird flies away from the chamber's corner to the side of the forest, If you say: ''Farewell mother, I'm taking off to catch some luck'' the golden bird flies away over the sea, never to be seen again. Ref. Don't go baby child, don't travel over the sea don't go, it's easier for us to suffer as one. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment by the original translator that captivates the meaning behind this song beautifully. This song is about occupations and the main line is: ''Ära mine lapsekene, ära mine üle mere, kergem on meil kannatada üheskoos.'' ''Don't go little child, don't go over sea, it's easier for us to suffer together.'' Referring to all those who escaped from occupations to another countries. And obviously referring to what was done to the relatives of the escaped ones. This song truly shows the level of oppression we have took over the history because it's a lullaby. It was common to sing babies to sleep with it. Same song was also used in film ''1944'' where soldiers had option whether to fight for free country or escape to other country.

There are two sides to every story. WWII was not as black and white as is often taught here. As an American who has been fed a subjective, biased narrative of WWII history, I found this film to be refreshingly enlightening. This is why I like foreign war films so much better than the junk agenda flicks Hollywood makes.

Salud!
