H&N .218 Slug Sampler Pack & FX Crown

Back out testing some more slugs again.
Again i'm using the H&N Slug Sampler Pack but in .218 this time which was kindly sent to me by Giles at Airgun101 to see if they are more accurate out of my standard FX Crown with 500 mm STX barrel compared to the .217 slugs that i tested in the last video.

Great watching someone else's frustration with the pellet/slug question I have a bald patch from the head scratching. Stop giving yourself a hard time about the 50y Hades group the vertical was very good but the wind will always widen them more than the slugs ..... it actually demonstrates perfectly how much the slugs buck the wind ..... good shooting!!

Thanks very much for that but i was still disappointed with my hades group but as you said a little wind goes a long way with a pellet at 50y.

Try using your power wheel. Shoot same slug at different speeds to find the best speed for your gun. Shoot 5 at Power Wheel #1, then #2, then #3 all the way to Max. Then find the best speed for that one slug by the best groups. Pick the best speed and then try longer distances. I have an Impact MK2 shooting NSA 31.2 gr slugs at 840 fps at 120 bar in a 700mm Heavy Liner 1:16 twist. 840 works for this gun. I did the same testing in various speeds at 30 yards to find 840 for this slug works best. Good luck.

Great vid as always, I reckon the rifle needs more air to drive the round faster that's why the lighter ones performed better as did the looser ones (faster fps), if you check Teds Vlog he fired a couple of rounds through first to dress the barrel for each test. Maybe a thought? Really good idea this as I have been wanting to test slugs in my piffle and this gives a good insight into what tune would be better. Thanks again.

Yes a few shots through the barrel for the hades pellets might have been a good idea but the slugs were all the same make so should be the same lead with the same pellet wax or lube so seasoning the barrel shouldn't really make a difference with them.

I find that the change to hades requires about 3 shots through the barrel to season it to that pellet before shooting a decent group. The closer to 1000 FPS for slugs the better I find. Great video👍.

Well i don't think i'll get anywhere near 1000fps without fitting a 700mm barrel but a .7 inch group at 100y with the 21gr at 876fps isn't bad.

Hades in my mk2 crown are way tighter than that at 50 yards, just shows different gun different results, 21 and 23 both sub moa, which is where I'd have thought the heaver slugs would have been, thank you for taking the time to test, looks like I have testing of my own to do.

As mentioned in another comment, the lighter ones should group better in a rifle set around 30ft/lbs, many contributors testing slugs are using about 45ft/lbs for .22. I too have a 30ft/lb rifle and watch many of these tests to see if there is anything to be gained at this power level, many factors contribute to the accuracy we crave and it's always been a 'trial and error' approach to see what ammunition our rifles will like. Incidentally I have seen a video where a 30ft/lb gun fired slugs very accurately, the only variable I could see was a longer barrel at 580mm. You previously tested the FX Hybrids, it might have been interesting to see an H&N slug and a FX Hybrid of similar weight compared through your gun. Thanks for your efforts.

There's just so many factors with the slugs and they promise a lot but you have to spend the time finding the right combination of weight, size and speed to suit the rifle your using when i'd say most people just want instant accuracy.

Defiantly crank the speed up on the heavier slugs and retest, sub 850ftps and they inconsistency unstable, they will explain the random odd shot like on the 30 grain slug. Crank the speeds up and you will find they disappear. Atb pal

Seems the more you go down the rabbit hole... Wow, so many variables, variations, in shooting slugs! Also types of barrels, can drive anyone batty :-) I'm sure this video will help many folks. Well, my guns are not high power, so slugs are something I don't need to worry about, thankfully... I personally love the accuracy, the simplicity, and price of a great pellet lol! Stay safe!

you should shoot at the same speed with all the pellets to see what works best....sample packs are for non regulator pcp or springers.

Fit a huma duel port and a hammer weight. My .25 Crown is running 33.95 gr pellets at 900fps.

I am thinking about about fitting one to get more speed, but your .25 crown probably has a 600mm barrel which will give you more speed than my 500mm barrel.

Hi David, I think if you push every slug at about 900-950 fps you'll get more consistency. I have also found that they are very dirty in my barrel compared to my Hades, maybe the larger contact surface of the slug or just the lube they use on them ? I give it a couple of pull throughs before I put the gun away.

I’m going to give the .218 sample pack a try in my LCS SK-19 .22. Maybe its LW 12 grove barrel will like them. H&N has one of the best deals on slugs I think at the moment. You got a really good group from the 21 grain slugs. I still wouldn’t count out the Hades pellet yet. You had 3 in the same hole at 100 yards. That’s not to shabby.

interesting test with slugs at slow speeds. have you thought of raising your reg pressure to move the slugs faster? might improve groupings even more while still keeping your set-up stock...

What would be of extreme interest is the measure of energy on impact of the Slugs compared to the Hades. Perhaps you could repeat the experiment with the 21s @ 100 yards and measure the impact velocity. This should give yo u the kinetic energy of the slug . Thanks for posting.

@@HuntersVermin You seem to be landing them within a 1" or so groupings. Chrony has a wide aperture so with a bit of caution it should be fine. A thick piece of clear acrylic should do it.

If it was me,,,,,, I’d go for the 30 grain. They are better in the wind than the 21 grain. I personally shoot 25 218s as it’s a happy medium for me. My .22 impact loves them

Yeah i noticed that too it was a perfect pellet shape hole but i think it was just the way the paper tore as i put another 2 pellets in the same spot so couldn't have been a flyer.

Good idea for the sampler pack, My experience is that they need speed (21gr in my Impact @ 984fps). The control shots I think should have either been H&N 21.14gr or JSB 18.13gr. Otherwise very interesting. My crown could not generate enough speed for slugs or the heavier pellet. Loves Hades and 18gr. Oh yes, even tried the 21gr slug with setting on the 25/30 port. Minimal speed increase. My reg pressure also at 145bar

If you have the 500mm barrel on the crown you cant get the silly speed so try the opposite and bring the lighter pellets back to 760-840 range. I know it might sound daft but slower allows better lands engagement in the stx thus you stabilise the round.

I was roughly zeroing each slug for the distance i was shooting using Strelok Pro but the heavier slugs especially the 30gr needs a lot more than the app was telling me.

Well the 30gr are the longest at 8.9mm and fitted in the FX crown magazine with no problem.

FX barrels are 5.5377. 5.54 for pellets and 5.5377 for slugs, Try manually pushing a slug down the barrel slowly with a rod to feel for and to eliminate any tight points, You will be surprised.

Well the 30 grain slugs are the longest at 8.9mm long and fit into the standard FX magazine with no problems.

Ahhh plenty of power with bigger shot count much better fitting stock (i love the stock) and miles better trigger than the rapid, on board pressure and reg gauges quick fill connector so you don't have to unscrew the bottle (did i say i liked the stock) much easier to adjust the hammer spring and reg pressure but i think my MFR was quieter and i miss that smooth bolt action.

HuntersVermin have you had any problems with the seals? And I shouldered one at the beginning of the year, they fit a treat but I I got put off as someone told me I’m better off sticking with my rapid as the fx are known for doing seals. I’m definitely tempted for tho!

when will the 10grn .177 and the 14grn .22 be available. not bad grouping. i was using the h&n hollow points they group nice, made new target out of old pc tower filled with carboard and plastic front works really. f,a,c. might need thick bit of wood or u just blow through. all the breast jim

@@HuntersVermin mine std 12ftlbs. was thunking if someone used pc tower for same. i brought 50 h&n slugs 21gn wanted to see if i can shave it down to 15t 16gn for a giggle look easy enough to do. if i put them through mine will as is, it make it over 12ftlbs on a pcp. not sure on spring, hope all good me

Sorry but i don't really know though for sure it is a lot less than the factory rifle with the factory settings for pellets as you have to turn the rifle up as far as you can to get the slugs to shoot anywhere near fast enough to stabilize.

Yes i agree but that is the top speed my rifle can achieve with its 500mm barrel.
