I'm the eldest of nine children, and was spanked as a kid. Spanking/slapping - any kind of violence against children is illegal in austria where i grew up. Last year I called the cops on my parents after they repeatedly slapped my underage sister and refusing to stop despite me trying to talk sense into them. I've been ousted from my family as a result. My parents' argument is that it's "just" slapping, not hitting with a belt etc, so how bad could it really be? This prompted me to do a ton of research on the topic, and actually there's tons of new evidence now that MRI scans etc. can be done proving the fact that actually slapping has similarly detrimental effects on neurological and behavioural development as more severe forms of abuse. The region of the brain that deals with assessing threats is a lot more active in children who have been hurt, even if its "just" a slap. It has been shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that slapping is incredibly harmful, and researchers advocate loudly for outlawing slapping for that exact reason. We have a responsibility to educate people about this, since slapping is still such a widespread practice. I'm happy to provide the studies on this if anyone is interested.

its so cute that Donna gets to have a whole segment just talking about monarch butterflies I loved this episode good for her
@purplelamp2732 жыл бұрын
I've taken classes on trauma and read articles about spanking - basically, do not spank. Kids that are spanked are more likely to have "issues" (mental health, developmental, etc.). However, when asked why parents spanked, most said they did not know what to do besides spank. Basically, to stop people from spanking, other alternatives need to be given. Definitely should not be an "arrest the parents situation" but it should be condemned by society and if a parent is given alternatives but still continues to spank, there should be an intervention with the parent because that's not normal.
@user-ui2tj7or7u2 жыл бұрын
Can confirm. Was spanked and physically abused. Now have severe anxiety around touch, don't know how to vocalize wanting to be touched, and start sobbing if there's any slamming/smacking sounds made by a human to put even the most basic things down. Working with parrots has helped me a lot honestly in unlearning how to intervene appropriately even though I never want kids for the above reasons and more. Bc you can/should never raise a hand to a bird but there's ways to appropriately discourage behavior and disengage to calm yourself when you feel overwhelmed or your temper flaring. Anyway, working on breaking the wheel.

They are literally adults tho they should be able to handle their kids with basic psychology. My mom would just outsmart me into convincing myself why she was right while also letting me win a few to teach me to think and stand up for myself but also trust her. Also great at adding levity, even made punishments funny. Other parents just seem like basic cavemen, they think more yelling will calm their kids down lol. They are angry themselves exhibiting poor emotional control. Why would a child respect an adult whos skin they can get under?
@theonlydeeyouwant2 жыл бұрын
@@banquetoftheleviathan1404 You don’t learn how to drive a stick by looking at it. Someone has to teach you. There are a lot of people whose parents took out their rage on them through punishments, including myself. I don’t have that rage but I didn’t receive the kind of love that I want to give. It is a choice but it’s not simple. My therapist told me it was okay to talk to my daughter and hug her after being stern with her. It sounds insane but I didn’t even know that was an option. Thank you for putting "bad" in quotations. It's actually so damaging for a child to hear that they're bad. In the black community specifically it's something that is said in jest, like "how are is -insert child's name-" and you'll often get the reply "you know he's just bad" and a million other iterations of that. Studies have it locked, kids hear what they're called and internalize it and believe it. Anyway, wrong behavior needs to be corrected. A child does not have a sense of good or bad until they are tweens and even then, they are only just beginning to understand consequences.

My parents never spanked me because both of my parents understand the emotional damage it causes. Instead of spanking, my parents would explain in detail what I did was wrong and ground me. Instead of scaring me into submission, I was taught and given non-harmful repercussions. I’m now 20 and my parents made mistakes but I’m eternally grateful that they never spanked me!
@lildraco20332 жыл бұрын
Interesting my parents are Italian so I was spanked from time to time but they never went overboard with it at all and I feel like it was deserved most of the times I was spanked 😅 which might sound like a weird statement but I learnt quickly if I do something really bad my mum would be coming for me so I learnt to stop doing bad shit 😅 I have a great relationship with both my parents still to this day which is a blessing in itself and we all laugh about it now as adults with my other siblings 😅 I understand everyone’s different but from my experience I feel like if used appropriately it can work we all turned out as fine adults 😅

@@lildraco2033 peace and love, but no child deserves being physically harmed/put in delibrate punishing pain by their caregiver. You didn't deserve it you were a kid. Kids do stupid shit, thats what being a kid is about. There is no 'asking for it' or deserving it'. there's hundreds to thousands of studies that no-it doesn't equal better behavior and has long term harm, and I mean this well but you do seem defensive when you don't need to be. It doesnt matter f you have a 'good' relationship with your parents, its not 'damning', but its proven by science to be a harmful response and personally seeing a vulnerable much younger human being should not give you cause or reason to ever consider harming them. Its ok if you found it hurtful but still continue a relationship with your parents now. You don't need to absolve them, to feel that their actions were unecessary or hurtful. I was spanked and it didn't make me 'learn' that I shouldn't do bad shit, it just made me craftier at not getting caught. I feared reproach more than I actually cared about doing the 'bad' thing.

Okay I’ll confess, the worst thing I did when I was a kid….we used to break into cars, horrible I know, but we would steal gum and random stuff. Never money or anything super criminal, but, I did take my neighbors garage door opener once. I would sit in the day time and mess with them opening and closing it. I still feel bad about that sometimes and I’m 27. Lmao thanks for giving me a safe space to confess my sins. 😂

I have studied early childhood education for 7 years, spanking is a scare tactic and not a effective disciplinary action. There is absolutely no correlation in a child’s mind between physical punishment and misbehavior. If anything, spanking only heightens a child’s frustration and anger and leads to other misbehavior. The goal of discipline is to teach a consequence for an action, what consequence does spanking teach? Fear those stronger then you?

The way Ethan talks about his dad coming home from work DEFINITELY mirrored how my siblings and I felt about our dad coming home. We knew 5:00 was the time and I can always remember being afraid because dad was coming home. My dad spanked us, but then he would take it WAY too far. I can remember watching him slamming my brother to the ground because it was bed time; my brother had fallen asleep and was basically sleepwalking down the hallway, and my dad didn’t like how slow my brother was going so he open-hand hit my brother in the back and sent him flying. I can remember pinching myself when my dad was yelling at me and praying to God to please let that be enough, that I was sorry God, and that I would never do it again(I had made prank phone calls.) He sent me to my room, so I thought God had answered my prayers, but 3 seconds later there my dad was, in the doorway. He started spanking me on the butt, and he always hit hard, and he just kept going and going. Well, it caused me to pee my pants, which infuriated my father, which led him to really start hitting me with his fist, and I blacked out and I couldn’t tell you what happened past that point.

In England & Northern Ireland smacking is legal but only if it’s ‘reasonable force’. If a smack leaves a mark or bruise it’s considered child abuse. In Scotland and Wales it’s completely banned. I think smacking is pointless, it’s just parents taking out their frustrations on their kids. I say this as an 80’s kid who was smacked a lot, and a mum of four who has never smacked any of my kids.
@Jake-00112 жыл бұрын
Child abuse is never good regardless of what people say about it toughening you up and not being that harmful. Every child is different and if the environment they grow up in isn't really that nice to begin with, getting get smacked can cause trauma that will stay with them forever. Adults justifying this behaviour are the ones who need smacking.

My brother took my game boy from me and I wanted to get him back. I separated egg whites from yolk, took the yolks, mixed it in a cup and pretended it was orange juice. I don't understand how these supreme court justices are supposed to be "above" politics when they are either in the federalists society or were once a member. someone explain this to me.
@Autryjohn42 жыл бұрын
The Supreme Court like any court of law is not influenced by any man woman or organization they are supposed to be completely impartial that’s why with politics affecting the court system comes the disintegration of neutrality and the rise of corruption and the ability for laws such as these to be passed or stalled sorry for the long winded expo I liked your question and thought I might have an answer that helps:)

My dad spanked me over every little thing. He left welts on my butt and back. One time my mom saw (she worked a lot, hardly saw us) and ran down the stairs screaming at him that she would kill him. My mom got very sick with MS, and in her last days she had nightmares about the bruises she saw on me and such guilt over it. She thought it was HER fault. I can forgive my dad for hitting me, being a living terror to me and my sisters, but never for psychologically scarring my mother that way
