Salad soup sandwich A dissertation Think of a food. Picture it in your mind. What would you call that food? What would you classify it as? What type of food is it? Ok… but what type of food is that? … Ok… but what type of food is THAT? You see, it is my opinion, as someone with no culinary education, experience, or relevance, that ever food can be, at its core, described to be either a salad, a soup, or a sandwich. These words are arbitrary and limited to my understanding of the English language, but these three categories are, to the best of my knowledge and research, universal in all human cuisine. I will attempt to define them with a wide variety of examples. It must first be stated that there is a difference between ingredients, and a dish. Simply put, a dish contains ingredients. If we took those ingredients and served them on their own, they would become a dish. For example: if you have a bowl of raspberries, those raspberries are a dish. If you took those raspberries, added some sugar, and cooked them they would become ingredients in a new dish: jam. And if you were to take that jam, a collection of ingredients, and added it to toast, another collection of ingredients, you would get a new dish. All of this is to say that assemblies are not recognized as their individuals but instead as their collective. You wouldn’t call them John Paul George and Ringo, you would call them The Beatles. The Sandwich A sandwich is a rigid food structure. An assembly of foods held together by an external food. The external food is not required to be separated and can be any form of sealed/unsealed as long as it encompasses and contains the other ingredients. It can be easily eaten with your hands, even if it’s traditionally eaten with utensils. The external food is usually carbs but can be anything. IMHO tacos, sushi, raviolis, pizza, hotdogs, pop tarts, toast, gyros, and burritos are all sandwiches. The Salad A salad is any food that contains mostly solids (sauces and dressings can be included in a salad) and is generally eaten with a fork, or chopsticks. Instead of being encompassed by another food it is encompassed by a plate or bowl. Examples of salads are most pasta dishes, stews, fried rice, casseroles, and poke. Foods like charcuterie are considered salads because while you usually eat it with your fingers, it is served in a random assortment instead of a rigid structure like a sandwich. Similarly, stuffed shells are not salads because while they are served on a plate covered in sauce and eaten with a knife and fork, the cheese is contained by the pasta in a structured unit, which would make stuffed shells a sandwich. The Soup A soup is like a salad in every way except it consists of mostly liquid and is traditionally eaten with a spoon, straw, or by slurping. Examples of soups would be breakfast cereal, ice cream (unless it is accompanied by a cone in which case it becomes a sandwich) and any beverage you would drink from a cup. There is admittedly an inherent grey area between all three and there are definitely foods that blur the line. For example: bread. Is a solid loaf of bread a soup? I wouldn’t think so. But what if you carve out the bread and fill it with chowder? Now is it a soup? Or is it just a vessel for the chowder which is a soup. But wouldn’t that make the bread bowl a sandwich? But you eat the chowder with a spoon and eventually, if you eat slow enough, the bread gets incorporated into the soup and it all becomes soup. Bread bowls really fuck everything up huh? But think about it. A chowder bread bowl is a collection of ingredients. Just because one of those ingredients is soup, does not mean the entire thing is soup. In fact a bread bowl can only be a sandwich. It is contained by bread. It’s a rigid food structure. Even if it is eaten like no other sandwich. Ultimately I have yet to find a food that I can’t pace in these three categories

When you think about it, at what point does a toast become a bread bowl? A pizza is toast, but if you gradually make the edges wider and more of a deep dish, it’s a bread bowl.
